Bananas: Nana Help

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK, I've dug these monsters. This is a "small" one, lol. It has multiple stems. Can I divide it now, or should I wait till spring? I'm just bringing it into the garage in a bushel basket for the winter. I have another one with "pups" but they seem to come out from the very bottom center of the plant and curl up to the top. How do I divide these?

You're sure busy today Susie - must be getting cold.

I've got those capri pants on and a t-shirt(my DG T-Shirt), comfy while digging, not while standing still, lol. Bill came home to help me dig the big bananas, he said he will come back to help move them. Those things weigh more than me!!!

I don't know.....but, Toadlily sent me a pup in early summer, and Ted gave me a pup at the RU, and both are doing great!!

eyes, you are a little north of me, but I leave those in the ground all winter. I just mulch really good. I bet if you use a tomato cage and fill it with mulch, it will be just fine. How big is the pup I sent? The one that came up after I sent yours is over 12 ft. tall!!! I wouwld hat to have to dig that one :-)

Wish I'd known that before I dug those monsters up!!!

Cala,
I think it depends on which bananas they are. Some of them are more hardy than others. Do you have one of my babies too? I can't even remember who all I sent them too :-)
The mind is the first to go you know.

Cala . . it looks like alot of hard work. Hopefully, you will not have to do this next fall

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

is this the zebrina?? DH broke his shovel getting mine out. will definitely go in a huge pot next year, not in the ground!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, I thought about that too, but they look so much better in the ground. Wonder if I can move them all with me???
Toadlily, no, I have these from MS and from Lisa.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Cala, what are the ones with the beautiful red underleaves?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Zebrina??? I got it from a local greenhouse, she was going to throw it away a couple of years ago.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

is it like my red one?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yes. Exactly like it.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

what am I going to do when you move???????? I won't ever see you again! tell me it's not soon

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, Bill has been promising for a few years, lol. He keeps pushing the date farther away. Let's see, you know I love to travel, it's one day to Brugnanny, one to Lisa's one to your house!! I'd have to come for the round-up, plant swap, etc...

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Calalily dont wear yourself out now, you are going to have to plant every one againcome spring. If you move you will have to hire some drivers for all them 18 wheelers.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bill has already said we can't take more flowers than will fit in the horse trailer, wonder if I could trade that baby in for a bigger one???

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Now that would be some hard choices to make. We would all be standing in line for the left over's. You had better stay awhile.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh my - that's like having to choose which child to leave behind - impossible!

(Zone 7b)

Cala, not that I'm an expert on this (or anything other than breaking shovels and misc. tools) but I'd leave them together for the winter and cut them apart with a bread knife before planting in the Spring. I've read that it's best to divide in the Spring after storage for things like cannas, dahlias, etc. I figure this would be the same deal. Next year you should try leaving one in the ground with a ton of mulch on it to see if you can get away with it. :)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Where are you going Cala?

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

LOL I thought you were referring to the person Nana when I came to the post.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Going to Calif. I'm glad to know I can leave these things attached till spring!!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)
