Trick or Treaters?

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Get 'em? Got 'em? Scared 'em? Heard of 'em?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Yes we get 'em; no we don't got 'em; yes we scare 'em; no, never heard 'em.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Out here in the country we have a maximum of about 10.Most folks tend to cover the big subdivisions where it's more populated.

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

We get ton's of Trick or Treator's, last year we had over 150!!! I went today to buy candy and got 192 pieces!Bags of swedish fish, kit kat's (large bar), ring pop's, mini m&m's in the little bottle's, push up pop's and 2 boxes of mixed candy bars (3 musk's, twix, milkyway, and I can't remember the other in the box)!!!

We don't scare them, but DH gives some of them a hard time about doing a trick!!!! hehe

We keep the porch light off on the evening of October 31st.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Been in this house for three years now and have never had a trick-or-treater even attempt to come up our driveway. My Mother lives in a senior citizen mobile home park in town and last year she had 6 total. Doesn't seem to be popular around here anymore.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Well, several years back I really splurged and bought a small fog machine. I love to give the candy out and have the kids all scared cuz of the fog like low clouds coming off the porch...

Funny, I think our house is kind of creepy without the fog ~ mmmm...... now what's up with that?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

We don't have many houses around here and very few children so don't expect much in the way of 'visitors'. But I do have a question, exactly what would be the tricks?? :-)

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

We get between 70 and 100.Depends on the weather. We decorate around the front porch with punkin lights, ghosts, goblins and assorted critters and scarecrows. I have a really gruesome werewolf mask that I put on and ambush the older ones with. It's too scary for the tykes but we get some teenagers and they get a kick out of it once their hearts re-start.

Crossville, TN

I LOVE Halloween!! And not one child lives near me!! I may have to go hang out at the mall to see the kids in their costumes! Yeah! Let's do that. Trick or Treat!!! hahahahaha.....The Old Witch, Jo (*now where did I put that darn broom??)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

NO one come here cause we have long drive way and our home is too far from street.. Every year, we bring kids to the Mall and see all those cute kids with their costumes... DD will be a witch and DS will be a Ninja...

A favorite halloween story: When I was in college, I had a large daily paper route, responsible for the collections as well as delivery.

As it happened, I was behind in collecting for the month and was out on halloween night trying to get the stragglers to pay. I had one of those very old trailer parks as part of my route... the kind with older, small trailers nestled in the lush overgrowth of vegatation so typical then of soiuth Florida.

At one trailer, I knocked, and heard this faint voice saying "Okay, just a minute" and the slow shuffle, shuffle of someone moving around. Finally the shuffle came to the door, opening to reveal a very frail, elderly man with a tiny, beat up straw basket which he proffered without comment. It contained 4 or 5 pieces of halloween candy.

When I told him I was collecting for the newspaperpaper and not a halloween trick-or-treater, his face fell with a look of such profound disappointment I was moved to tears. After he paid me, I went looking for any kid I could find in a costume, intending to bring someone back to the man's door to knock and get a treat. Sadly, I found none.

That happened forty years ago today and the disappointment (and loneliness) in that man's face is as clear in my memory now as it was then.

Happy Halloween. Be Thankful for the kids.

darius, what are the cryptic numbers/letters on your post? a secret message???
That is a sad story Darius.

we get tons of them...little kids, big kids...My daughter decorated the outside last night.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Our Beggars' Night was last night; it was different than any other year. There are posted hours, and it is always 6-8 pm. Most years we get few kids, maybe 30-40. Other years we get about 100. But almost always they are out by 6 and back home by 7. Last night we had had about 10 by 7 pm and figured that was it. By about 7:15 there had been 30 more kids; they kept coming and coming until we turned off at 8 pm. We probably had 200 kids in all! I can't figure out what happened. Terrible weather, too (not rain, but cold, damp, cloudy, overcast, windy, yuck).

When I lived in Phoenix, AZ, trick-or-treat didn't happen. At least hardly at all. Don't know if it does, even now. Stores didn't sell candy for them, either.

My dad loves to hand out the candy. It was always his job; it is the one time in his life that he allows himself to enjoy small children. Usually they just make him nervous.

Anyone in Europe? Do kids Trick or Treat there? Ever heard of it?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Pebble.. I don't know what those numbers are... they showed up in the 'preview' and I just assumed it was something in Dave's programming that didn't go away in the final posting. At the top, where there are 2 sets of numbers, there was just one set at the original 'preview', and when I made corrections and went to 'preview' again, there were 2.

I'll ask Dave to take a look...

I am always here handing out candy, DH is always gone on halloween. I have already had about 50 kids and it is just barely 7 pm. I always get around 75-100 kids or more here. I love to see all their creative costumes.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Ours will end in about 5 minutes. Had around a 100 kids been slow the last little bit. All the kids where cute but I usually try to pick out my favorite costume couldn't do that this year there was no unique one. Happy Halloween everybody!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I had VERY few kids actually say to me (or us), "Trick or Treat?" I had to prompt them on more than several occasions and the response I got was that they were shy! But, after a prompting, they not only said, "Trick or Treat", but "Thank You", too.

We've got to fix that, don't we?

Alfred, ON(Zone 4b)

we don't get kids here, we live in the country, so we go to town, it's not a big town, but the kids have fun.

we decorate the house a little, and prepare some treats every year just in case.

here is a picture of the kids, mine is the vampire on the right :)

I was right, we had none again and Mom only had 4 this year. She bought $15.00 worth of candy for the trick-or-treaters and now is wondering what to do with all of it. LOL I told her to indulge because once in your life you should. She answered that at almost 90 years of age she would be taken to the hospital to have her stomach pumped if she ate all of that candy. LOLOLOL

We debated what to do, but ended up with a compromise. We really don't like the true meaning of Halloween but we are new in the neighborhood and want to give an air of openness, approachability and friendliness, not a grinchy type of attitude... We don't want to be known as the mean people who don't give out candy only to meet the kids later and they find out that the stingy people are the Christian people. So, we decorated with Pooh and Tigger trick or treater yard decorations, and an uncarved pumpkin that emphasized harvest and the beauty of the fall colors of the mums... we gave out candy - and with each, a few Christian tracts, These tracts are they are so cool, they are written like little comic books, that present the gospel in a way that kids can understand.

We got to meet some of our further down the road neighbors and their darling grandchildren... so it was a good thing we decided. However, next year we're going to skip the whole pumpkin thing and decorate with a Harvest Blessings sign and a cornucopia and beautiful fall flowers. I really hate what Halloween's roots stand for and am less and less enthralled with it as the years go by, understanding how the day has been glossed over with lights, etc. almost to the level of Christmas, which horrifies me!

That's just my 2 cents, don't mean to offend anyone, just my own belief.

Love in Christ,
Janie

I had 8 children... I'm so depressed... But every kid said "trick or treat" and "thank you". I was amazed considering I only knew 4 of the kids.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

No Halloween here, no trick or treaters. They are well known here anyway.... and some people make pumpkin lanterns. (like I did once)

Well, anyway, on Easter, on palmusunnuntai (Palm Sunday) morning, kids dress up like withces, bunnies and that kind of things, and then go from door to door with decorated pussy willow branches, and say:

Virvon varvon, tulevaks vuodeks, vitsa sulle, palkka mulle

Then people give them candy, money, chocolate, chocolate eggs, etc..

:)

Darius, that brought tears to my eyes. One year I took my 4-H kids to a local nursing home for Trick or Treat....the Recreational Director had worked with me and had furnished candy for the residents to hand out to the kids. All of us enjoyed it, and since my club was used to doing a lot of interacting with the Nursing home it was "their" patients!! The "patients" furnished punch and cupcakes.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

We had 12 last night. Usually between 60 and 80. The weather was nice; the firemen were out with their flashlights. None of the neighbors can figure what happened. Maybe there was an organized party somewhere? What do we do next year? I for one am going to do it again next year, but many neighbors aren't. Strange night.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

We didnt have very many kids after all. My children were worried that we werent going to have enough candy, well...we have plenty left over.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

SLEDDER I thought is might just be Beaver County, but others haven't had many either.

BTW, you will have to come over this spring and give me a hand with pond plants. I have no idea at all, and would appreciate the advice.

It was a record setter this year, all 192 piece's of candy went and I had to break open the bag's of little pretzels. I had 2 bag's of 36 and I went through 1 whole bag and we started the other! I figure we gave about about 240 treat's!!!

I might have to take a loan out next year just to buy candy!!!!!!!

We never get any trick or treaters. :( We live kind of far off the road, so I'll bet that's the reason. But next year I think we'll make it more "inviting" ~ maybe make a spider out of a round bale of hay like I saw in the pic on the Photos forum, line him with orange lights and put him up by the front gate next to a nice, big sign that says "Trick or Treaters welcome here ~ dragon food is expensive." *Grin!*

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Celia, funny, but I don't remember DH was ORANGE that day in Berlin *grin*

Evert, translation? And why oh why do children go "trick or treating" in spring?

Last year we had almost no trick or treaters; many of the area churches had special things going on that evening; there was much more a feeling in our area that we wanted nurturing and caring, not scaring each other. Most of the costumes this year were much more benign than other years, also; many more cute little animals and angels, rather than demons.

I would still love to hear about the rest of Europe and South America and Australia and Asia. Do you have any Halloween (or fall or spring harvest) customs?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Well, maybe some translator can translate it better. Such oldish words in it.

And it isn't the halloween we are celebrating in the Spring ;) Same as I could ask why do you do it in Fall :} It's just our funny Easter custom, the willows present the palm leaves which the peopel throw on the way where jesus were riding with his horse or something....
