Bananas: Overwintering bananas

(Zone 7b)

I have 2 dwarf cavendish that I foolishly planted in the ground last year. I put about 12" of mulch on them for the winter after the frost killed the foliage. This year they came back and grew as tall as the eaves of the house! Not what I was thinking or expecting from dwarves. They also started kicking out pups left and right that I break shovels trying to dig. This year I'm not going to mulch them and see what happens. If they come back fine, but if not I'm replacing them with some super dwarf cavendish.

DH tried to talk me into leaving the zebrina in the ground. wish I had, if only I'd been able to just get one pup as a backup!! too late now, but next year, one will be in a pot, the other in the ground, and we ain't diggin' again!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

I just leave mine the way they are (dead leaves etc)during the winter and cut them back in the spring.

oh connie, for one more zone number!!! lol

Ha! I am also wishing for one more zone number, and then one more, like I want to be a 10. I am thinking you might get by with this method if you put a good layer of mulch and pine straw over?

I realize it's March 10th, but have just gotten on board with you guys. I brought my two bananas indoors (zone 5) and have treated them as house plants. They're about 7' tall each with 6-7 leaves. Should I do anything with them now??

give them light
keep them warm
keep them damp
i think thats it ...anyone else

I'm sorry, but I have to admit I got a chuckle out of you folk in LA and GA and FL worrying about cold weather with your bananas...though at 10 to 12 feet tall I'm thinking holy smokes! I have a pup outside now here in NY and I'm just now bringing it in....
