Sumping's Coming

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, as I may have mentioned on several threads, we are experiencing a bit of flooding on the Kenai Peninsula. Seward has a couple areas that have been evacuated, but we've only experienced basement flooding here at our house. Consequently, we had three sump pumps droning away in the basement, their hoses stretched out into the lower yard.

We had a couple days of rainless weather...one was actually sunny-ish. However, the second weather front has arrived, and yesterday was so overcast and rainy that it really never got light out there. I've been forcing myself to go out and continue putting things away for winter, but it requires rain coat, rubber gloves, and boots. Raking leaves is like skimming them off a swimming pool!

So, yesterday I refused to go outdoors. I spent most of the day in my "office", but mostly just played in the "Garden". By evening, as we settled in for a two hour episode of Third Watch, the wind kicked up and the power went out. DH & I just gave up and went to bed...at 8:20pm!

Consequently, after a night of listening to the sumps slurping up water, I was up at 4:40am. The time change has thrown us both for a loop, and the weather hasn't helped. Perhaps it is just old age creeping up on me. When I was young, I could never figure out why the elderly always got up so early... for what?.... the morning news??? Now I'm beginning to understand it may not be a choice.

Oh, well, at some point, the weather will break, the temp will drop, and it will be winter. Whatever is left in the yard will be waiting for me in the spring. Maybe I'll drink a cup of coffee at 6pm tonight so I can stay awake til 9:30! I'll be a regular night owl!... unless the power goes out again!

Oh weez, sounds like you have your hands full, hope you get a respite from the rain...

I am sorry to hear about the flooding and hope it doesn't get worse.

I do know what you mean about not being able to stay up late. I also use to wonder why the older folks went to bed early and got up so early but find I do it myself but still don't really know why.

Thanks, everybody. Just saw the MiniSchnuz's thread, so I guess I shouldn't complain! This is unseasonably warm weather four this time of year in Seward. I woke to 40 degree weather this morning. I'd sure like a few days of sun before we freeze up, but it's probably not in the cards!

So, what happened on Third Watch, tIG? They'd just found Tatiana's (sp?) kid dead when our power went off.

I'll email you later, great show!!! if it doesn't dry up here soon, we're gonna sink. and more is coming. Wish it would spread out through the year!!

Man, Weez, sounds like a wonderful night to me! LOL! All except the time-change sleeping thing ~ that sucks. But I'm just one of those weirdos that love the energy that comes with a good storm. Of course tornadoes aren't that nice, so we plan to have a root cellar one of these days.

BTW, I love your sprinkler. ;)

Weezy, looks a lot like Corpus Christi looked yesterday!! Make some tea, and get some rest.....nature is good about repairing herself.

Thanks, Eyes. I guess we've decided to spend today indoors. Dennis has a couple Toyostove jobs to do, but nothing that can't wait a day or two. As far as nature repairing herself, you're certainly right about that! That's just what she's doing now. There has been so much new building around here, that many of the natural run-off areas have been obstructed with fill. Nature is just running through a few houses to get where she's going. Running water will always find a way to get where it's going!

Wingnut: I've always loved storms, too, but this isn't the fun kind. This one is just darkness and rain. The bit of wind we got last night only lasted long enough to screw up the electicity. I'm glad, since the basement sump pumps run on electricity! When I was a kid in Indiana, I always loved the fresh ozone air and the golden hue that an approaching storm would bring on a hot summer's day. I would always run outdoors in storms, and my mother would stand at the screen door hollering at me to stay out from under the trees... good memories!

Weez, that's a lot of H2O coming out the hoses. Thank goodness for sump pumps. I was out today pulling up the annuals and half-hardy perennials (much discussed) til the rain turned to freezing rain. Just a little bit slippery and muddy (sounds like good conditions for a football game). Didn't think I would say this but, let the frost begin. We've had enough!

Stay dry!

Was that the sump pump hoses?! OMG, I didn't realize it was that bad, Weez!!! Nope, NOT the fun kind of storm.

We also have had the dreary kind of dismal rain all day Monday and Tuesday, and now it looks like staying gray and cloudy the rest of the week. I love storms; I know the ground loves this kind of rainy gray day after day, but not me! I want the sun back!
