going to florida for the winter need input about travel

Mesick, MI(Zone 5a)

my husband and i are planning to go to florida for the winter taking a travel trailer we have never done this before and would appreciate any travel tips any of you might have
we live in northern michigan and will be leaving soon if all goes well we will be taking a 30foot travel trailer so we don't know about places to stay things to see anyways to save money we are both retired now so a fixed income has to be considered
i have looked on the internet and found a lot of public gardens in florida but it would be nice to hear from some of you who have actually visited them
thank you for your help

Hi birdlady! It might be good to get reservations for your stay before you leave, as the popular sites go fast. You can do this on the internet once you know where you want to go. The St. Augustine area is nice and affordable in the winter.

There are a lot of retirees in Sarasota and they all seem to love it. I live in the mountains of NC and we get a lot of Floridians up here in the summer because it is so much cooler than the rest of the south. Some originally came from much further north, like you, settled in Florida and are now seeking a cool place in the summer. We call the "half-backs" lol.
If you cross to the extreme east before you get all the way in Florida, stop and look at the Brookgreen gardens near Myrtle Beach, SC

Shirley, this web site may be of some help. It depends on what part of Florida you wish to winter in...East coast, West Coast?? Lakeland is very central...and a nice town...not too big, but larger places accessabile...like Orlando, Tampa and many attractions. I lived in Homosassa Springs and loved it...no great touristy stuff...good fishing, and the Manatee park (State Wildlife Park) was the main attraction. It is about 90 miles north of Tampa, and 35 miles south east of Ocala. Jo

we are planning to go to the lakeland area it sounds really nice and the tigers are there in the spring so we can enjoy a ballgame without going to detroit that is a definite bonus i am just not used to so many people we live in the woods here and cannot see any other people it will be different being around other people
thanks for the hyperlink it is really a big help

Shirley....Yes...Tigertown is in Lakeland! I plan (??) on spending either Jan. or Feb in Fla...and will go to Lakeland to visit old friends. We used to managae a Seniors Park there (no travel trailers though). I'm emailing a number where I will be in case we can hook up and meet. Kikisdad will be near where I am going...so we might be able to have a mini round up...If you like Flea Markets...don't miss the one at Webster, Fla...not too far from Lakeland. Jo
