The other night in chat, someone asked what is DH and DW. We all gave slightly different answers, so it occured to me to wonder, when you type the abbreviation, what words are going through your minds? Now remember, be nice!
How about DD, DS, and all the others, meaning when you write them about your own family members. And be nice! *grin*
What is your private translation?
I thought it referred to "Dear Husband" "Dear Wife" "Dear Son" ect.
Paul
"In the beginning" I had no idea what those abbrevations meant until I asked. They said only Dear Wife and Dear Husband etc.. Here in Finland we don't have such abbrevations, maybe because of the cultural differences :}
Evert, I was thinking of you when I was wondering about this. There has to be an equivalent in Finnish, and in all languages, to indicate spouse. I have no clue who first came up with the abbreviations, but I have heard so many: dear, darling, devoted, dearest, and a few humorous ones too: dunderhead, to name the politest one ;)
What is it Wintermoor calls his wife, SWMBO? I never heard his translation for that one. Then of course Windsurffer with OB, the list goes on.
Well, we don't call them like "dear husband" or so...
kulta, kultsi, muru, are some names to call your husband/wife anyway. :}
(avio)mies = husband
vaimo = wife
SWMBO - She who must be obeyed
LOL Baa, really? At least he knows his place *grin*
So, Evert, kulta mies would be an affectionate term for husband? Do people type it out fully in chat rooms?
No, you can say kulta mies :} It sounds funny. You can say "Rakas mieheni" (means "my sweet husband" or something..). Rakas is also one way to call your spouse.
Wintermoor may have a different intepretation but I remember the moniker from a TV comedy series called Rumpole of the Bailey, Rumpole used to say it in deep, solemn tones.
Evert that is sweet!
Baa, that show has been on here too: my parents love it! My mother has cited that expression to many of her friends, all of the women have thought that is a wonderful way to describe a wife. The men don't really appreciate the nuances of that expression!
My dad, by the way, has for most of his marriage, referred to her as "the wife"; not "my wife" or "June (her name)". I think that must be from his German heritage. "The wife and I" really sticks in most women's craw!
LOL Lupine, I think there is a certain amount of cultural difference on that!
It's quite common for men to say 'the wife' or ' the missus' here too.
Okay, what does ROFL stand for?
or is it ROFLOL?
Rolling On Floor Laughing (Out Loud)
When I type DH...I am thinking of DARLING...I think it "flows" better than DEAR Jo
ROFL; stands for, Rolling On The Floor Laughing
LOL; standss for, Laughing Out Loud or Lots of Luck
ROGLMAO; stands for Rolling On Floor Laughing My A-- Off
DD; I use it at Darling Daughter
DH; Darling Husband
BTW; - By The Way
BFN; Bye For Now
GWM; Great Web Master
NRN; No Reply Necessary
BTWBO; Be There With Bells On
LSHHTCMS; Laughed So Hard,Hard To Change My Shorts
HIOOC; Help, I'm Out Of Coffee
Just to name a few here

I like to call my DH, DGH: Dear Garden Hubby
LOL; Jo,YCTFTI......You can type faster than I.
You weren't there when I started.
Well,I'm not slow,I'm not fast; just half fast, I guess.
Some folks here call their spouse "their ole lady" or "My ole man" I don't call him that though, but when he refers to me he does call me his ole lady! I have to remind him that I am NOT an old lady I am only 36! LOL
I have also read OB==old bucket referring to their husband.
Old Lady and Old man really gets my dander up...I used to work in the office of a maintenance department for a grocery chain...by the time I left here...not ONE of the men were refering to their wifes that way!!! When I remarried a cousin asked me "what does your old man do"? I replied: "I didn't marry an OLD man"!! The day he died he still wasn't an "old man!" Jo
I know what cha mean Jo, I hate being talked about as his ole lady!! Too bad you don't live closer to us...you could get my dh to stop calling me that. LOL
BRB - be right back
IMHO - in my honest opinion
ASL - age sex location
I always thought IMHO was in my humble opinion. See - dialect even here, LOL! My pastor assumed LOL meant Lots of Love. That sounds nice, too. :)
LMK - Let me know
We don't use any abbrevations like that here, the only one I can think is EVVVK (Ei vois vittu vähempää kiinnostaa) - which mostly youngsters use. :}
gee half the time I use DH the D stand for Dumb......
Did someone already mention DGS and DGD? To me, of course, it means Dearest Grandson, Dearest Granddarling, and then I use GD and GS for the other grands. I love them all but you all know by now I claim total partiality with one or two.
The one I find confusing is SIL, which might mean sister-in-law or son-in-law.
Me too Aimee...on the SIL...so I usaully type Son IL Oh well! Jo
TTYL=Talk to ya later.
CYOTFS=See ya on the flip side.
B4=Before
B/c=Because
Frankly,i do not use LMAO, i use LMTO.
Since I cannot easily roll on the floor laughing, I ROCL (roll on the chair laughing *grin*)
Evert, what is EWWK (or whatever that was)? Sounds kind of silly when I phoenetically say it ;D
CC, all right, ungag him LOL.
It is EVVVK not EWWK. Well, it is hard to translate....
DH = Dear Husband or Dirty Hound depending on my mood and his behavior.
DS= Darling Son or Dreadful showoff
DD= Delightful Daughter or Dumb and Dumber if she starts acting blonde
I keep hoping Wintermoor will chime in with the name applied to him by SWMBO. LB, I think, and maybe he should answer privately to all who are curious.
I've just seen this thread, I must be blind *blink*, but I've only been on sporadically recently.
Yes SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) may have been in Rumpole of the whatever it was, but I knew this from my Step-Dad Joe (God love him), who during a bit of 'pressure' from my Mum said to me, "Let's keep quiet Barry, cos when She Who Must Be Obeyed is in one, then SHE'S IN ONE" (meaning a bad mood), that was the end of the argument with my Mum, since I couldn't stop laughing, about how he said it, for hours. That was years before Rumpole even made the tv :-)
To answer Aimee's question, SWMBO normally calls me either Barry (serious), or Scotty (not so serious), so thankfully most times I get Scotty ;-)
Now and then I get called "Mein Schatz", which means my treasure, my love, my dearest etc.... but that's only.... *looking over shoulder to see if anyone's reading this*.... that's only when .... er... g'nite ;-)
Wintermoor
giggle......
G'nite, Barry!! Jo
G'night Scotty! G'night Jo. G'nite all. Good night, Elizabeth! Good night John Boy. See y'all tomorrow (or the day after).
Oh,sorry,i forgot to tell the meaning of LMTO.it means laugh my tears out,or laugh my teeth out.don't ask me why.we chinese do say like this.BTW,we also say LMBA,( laugh my belly ache),and LOOB(laugh out of breath). ):
Certainly a wealth of information on this thread. More abbreviations than YCSASA (you can shake a stick at). I have always found it easier for me to call my DH what he is - Steve, and Tim is Tim and Tasha is Tasha and Jen is Jen and Ben (well Ben is Ben).
Me too, have the same sense.why not call a spade a spade?
sometimes i even don't know what BW really means.it is beautiful wife,best wife, or bad ,bitcn wife? *grin to ears*
Off-track: Haigr, I am so glad to see you! I have missed you around the past few weeks.
Back on-track: Jianhua, I love your abbreviations! Especially LMBA. I will have to remember that one. But beware the BW *evil grin*
