Fall Leaves
Here in Vancouver, Wa and in Portland (across the river)where I lived for many years, ther leaves do turn beatiful colors and drop off. This is caused by the shortening of the days, and lack of light.
In my neighbourhood there are two maple trees, identical, within 2 feet of each other, same species. One is bright red, the other is still green. I keep looking at that and think how odd it is. But now that I think of it, maybe one is more in line of the house's shadow.
I love this time of the year for the splendid colors, and the leaves blowing around.
The leaves turn and fall here too. Some years the display is better than others. This year seems to be going to be a good one - and for berries, they're fantastic this year.
Around me the leaf colour tends more to yellows and oranges. It seems to get more brilliantly red to the west of where i live on acid soils, I'm on chalk. Does anyone else notice the difference the soil type makes?
As I was driving on the Autobahn between Hamburg and Berlin yesteday morning, the sun came out for about 10 minutes, and I got the most fantastic colour-show I have seen in years.
I love the Autumn for its leaves colours more than any other time of the year, it's just a shame that few of my plants bloom at this time.

Trees are all coloured here, except the ones with needles ;) The most common tree in Finland is Pine. (although you may not notice it)
I think the soil does make the leaf colour different, as some maples here (which are all Acer plantanoides) have yellow leaves, some have red and some even a little purplish-red.
Up north in Lapland, in "Ruska-aika" everything is red , orange and yellow. http://www.enontekio.fi/suomi/matkailu/ruska2.jpg http://www.koillissanomat.fi/photo99/nature10/kuva10.jpg
Evert, Finnish pine is well known in the lumber industry....
Is it? :) Well, Finland has got a lot of lumber industry, we have so many forests.
Wow those are breathtaking shots Evert. I particularly like the first one.
I love autumn - it's always been my favourite season. Though now i'm beginning to appreciate spring as well. In autumn there are such wonderful colours around and there's something wild and free about the windy weather and the swirling leaves. Must be strange to live somewhere with little difference between the seasons. Can anyone out there tell us how it feels?
Here I feel like, oh no, soon it will be dark when I go to school, and dark when I come back, and it will be snow everywhere, it will be raining snow and wind and... But we have some great sunsets in winter. :}
I don't know if I have much to say about autumn. I don't like it.
The seasons are different everywhere i suppose. You might like autumn here Evert, and i might dislike yours LOL
*G*
Since we usually have dry spells in the summer, and many of those turn into regular droughts, the trees here often fail to get good autumn color. They mostly turn brown then fall off. In good years, though, most trees are magnificent. There are many sweet gum trees (I love the name: liquiumber [sp]) that get the most beautiful glowing red color. The sugar maples are more orange-red; the oaks are a wide variety of reds and yellows, just a whole rainbow.
But I dislike fall too. Mostly because of the oncoming cold and darkness. I think I must be part bear: I semi-hibernate in the winter.
no leaf change at all here. A few of our trees lose their leaves around late Nov. , but there are no color changes. Two things I hope to see one day: the leaves change color and snow.
A lot of the leaves change color before they fall here. The sweet gum leaves turn red, orange and yellow. The tallow tree leaves also turn the same colors. Most of them turn yellow then brown before they fall. I bought a sugar maple hoping to get some bright colored leaves but it doesn`t seem to want to grow very well here. The Eastern and Northern states especially Pa. are very beautiful this time of the year. The colors remind me of a fire and they are just as bright.
busybee, what's tallow tree please? I haven't heard of that one
Philomel, the tallow tree is a fast growing tree that is very prolific here. It is almost considered a noxious weed! It is called Sapium sebiferum, also known as Popcorn Tree, due to the seed pods that look like clusters of popcorn.http://www.floridata.com/ref/S/sapi_seb.cfm

Thanks Lisa and thanks for the link
So many introductions can become a problem. It's a very handsome tree in autumn by the look of it though
I have two gum trees, one in front and one in back. Last year, the one in front didnt loose it's leaves....they do turn a nice bright red. For color though, you can't beat a burning bush...I have several and the red on them is so vibrant
The leaves here right now are a riot of color. Although the English Oak in my front yard is still green it will soon turn brown and it hangs on to most of its leaves through most of the winter unless we get a terrific windstorm. I love the cooler weather of fall but spring is my favorite time for the newness of it and getting to plant the garden that I have spent long winter days and nights planning.
WAAAAAH...I miss the beauty of fall leaves!! I grew up in Philly and lived in Buffalo for awhile. Fall was always so pretty. At least the popcorn trees change color and my Japaneese maple always puts on a good show. Right now my world is yellow from all the wildflowers/weeds. The picture is of our back acres which is left wild.
I want to Thank you all for the Picture's
and telling me about your leaves
Evert your picture's were beautiful
I really like the first one,you can see out so far
and Lupinelover I am with you if I didn't know what was coming behide all of that beautiful color I wouldn't mind,(BUT)I do know and people's ask me what am I going to do when winter get here,I am going to hibernate like a bear,
only I am going to eat Ha Ha
my sister in law and I were talking and she ask this qus
about the leave's in other place's,
and I told her I would ask on here,
so Thank you for your help. so have a great one
One of our trees lost most of its leaves yesterday, so I got to spend 3 hours today raking. One down, 99 to go! Did I mention that I don't like fall? *grin*
