Preconceived notions?

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

After talking to a friend tonight we talked about preconceived notions. I know we all have them. I know there was a post while back about how we thought other DG member's looked. Well with so many meetings and phone conversations going on now. I would like to know how people you have meet now or talked to on the phone are different than you thought they would be? I guess this means I have to start....lol I have talked to Lisa on the phone and I was really surprised I thought she would be more twangy . Margaret ( aka Louisa) sounds very elegant and sophisticated. The people that I have met that surprised me most was herblady I had her pictured as some old lady and yardbird I never imagined a smile so sweet or iris to be so beautiful.Ok somebody else's turn.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Miss Smockette, she's witty, articulate, a wonderfully enegetic gal. Then there's Toadlily. I want y'all to know she's the brunette version of Badseed, and this is a good thing!! Wintermoor and Louisa's accents I adore! And earthling, the smile of an angel, and every bit as sweet! I certainly never imagined that Jim would be so tall, and a wonderful gentleman he is, with a heart of gold. I've been blessed with more than this, and more I will add later.

Well, dear DGers, How lucky and blessed you are to have met so many fellow DGers. I have met Pebble, and that was great. She was very kind, so considerate. Louisa has called but always has gotten my answering machine, but she sounds as you all have said so elegant. Would be wonderful to meet others.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Ohhh Lordy lawdy lawsy me! Hard for me to say! I remember calling GW and Howie one nite on the phone (LATE nite, cuz I knew they'd be up)! I wasn't too surprised to hear them but they sure seemed s'prised to hear me (and were straining their ears to do their best to understand what I was saying!). GW even unlocked Howie from the basement and let him come upstairs into the real house, just to talk for a bit that nite!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I've only met Finnish gardeners and they have all been a little different from what I've thought. :}

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I have only met 2 people from DG and they were Stormy19(Jackie) and she is a hoot! She is a sweetheart, actually she only lives about 2 miles from me and we have became prety close plant buddies! She has more plants than you can shake a stick at and she knows sooo much about all of them too!! I'm sure we'll always be friends. She is just like I thought she would be kind hearted and giving.

I've also met tiG... which was such a treat for me b/c she was soo well known here on DG and I felt like it was a honor to meet her. She is the sweetest thing you would ever hope to meet and she is just like what I thought she was. She gave me my first Brugs and so she is to blame for my new addiction! LOL I've only been to her house that one time but I've been trying to plan another trip. (hopefully soon!!) IF you ever have the chance to meet her....don't pass it up! You wont be disappointed I promise you that!!

There are still others in my area that I would like to meet and trade with and maybe one of these days I'll get around to it.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

**blushing real big** (read 'so well known' as 'has a big ole mouth')
Molly my dear, I felt like we knew each other for years when you came!!! and I've met and spent a wonderful afternoon with stormy19 too, both great GA gals!!

But I came in to talk about another:) We've talked about accents before and how different it is to talk to someone from another place. I've talked to Mark before, but expected that wonderful brouge.
But I got a call yesterday from justmelisa. I thought southerners had the thickest accents. Well, hers isn't really thick, but it's more southerner than me!!!! lol
I lived in Gray, LA 28 years ago, just down the road from Lisa, and I guess I don't remember that real cajun accent. I love it!!! I had trouble listening to what she was saying, from wanting to memorize the accent in my head for later! Lisa, I knew you were a delight from your written words, but it was a joy to listen to you on the phone.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL tiG, that is funny!!!! I asked Carol to tell me how I talk..I told her I knew I didn't have a 'twang' so I wanted to hear how I sounded to others, I still don't know how I sound, she just giggled!

BTW, I actually live in Gray-Bayou Blue. Not in Thibodaux, I just have to get my mail from Thibodaux we don't have a post office in Bayou Blue so my addy goes to Thibodaux.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I wish I could remember my addy down there. I know it was a long highway and I was one of the last houses for what seemed to me forever. But I was young, had a baby and wanted terribly to come home to GA.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh dear, that is so funny!! I really am not elegant or sophisticated. I just have an English accent that you guys are not familiar with.......lol!!

Carol, Tim and Erin I have met on a few occasions and it's always fun. I have spoken on the phone with quite a few of my friends. vic, strong but gentle. Kathleen and Peggy. Both have soft and sweet voices - just like them!! Chele (Badseed) has a deep sexy voice and suits her to a T!! Wintermoor, och aye!! Can't mistake that accent! Funny, and always makes me laugh! Trish briefly but a sweet and young voice. I've spoken to 'eyes' a couple of times. Down to earth and darn right friendly! Coco, sweet Coco. Yes, I've seen a picture of her! :-) Lisa, joyful, beautiful!! Kimberley (Gardenwife) always there with a tranquil voice and my mentor when I have problems with the internet. Zany, loving and kind - with no punctuation marks!!!!!!!! Iris, braveheart, love her voice, it's my favourite part of the US for accents. Djm (Doris) another brave and beautiful voice. Lupinelover - Kathy - positive and faithful. Aimee, great, light voice and a total comedian!! Pebble phones me quite a bit - succint and laid back!! Smiln32 (Carla)- another sweet, soft voice. And I have left the biggest surprise to last but she is not least - Marclay!!! Shirley has an amazing voice which belies her soft and caring posts. It is strong, deep, and one of authority. Sheesh, sounds as though I spend all my days on the phone but really I don't!! lol!! We are just available to each other when the need arises mostly and sometimes there are many needs. We speak of the plants we are going to exchange of course, but it's so good to hear the voices and very reassuring to know that there are friends, real friends, out there even though we haven't met but something I hope to bring about in the not too distant future!! Phew!! Hope I haven't forgotten anyone!! :-)

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

LOL, but Margaret, you didn't tell them what you thought about me BEFORE we talked!!! "Bossy old farmer woman with no patience!" hehe, come on, fess up - this is about preconceived notions!

I personally thought that our Jo (roadrunner) was a sweet little old lady, until I met her this summer. Sweet, mostly, but with a touch of pepper(don't ever try to feed her RICE), lady, yes in deed, but little and old don't come anywhere near her. She's a downright force of nature, that one and old just ain't in that vocabulary!

I was also afraid that Calalily was going to think me a fraud with my little bit of gardening knowledge, but we hit it off right away and have become good friends inspite of our dogs interesting pot eating habits. And Carol, I already knew from the phone, border collie pepople are all crazy!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I just found this thread! I tell ya, I think the voice/personnae which most surprised me was Shoe. When he called, I was taken aback at how soft a voice he has. I had him all pictured as a guy with a gravelly voice. He just seemed like he'd be...Louder, LOL! What a nice surprise to hear Shoe's "dulcet tones".

Having met so many of you guys, I don't even know where to go after this. :) I love chatting online with folks, and it's so fun to talk on the phone, too. Margaret is so full of these wonderful pet names, it's always fun to talk to her. And you're right - Chele does have a sexy voice!

Obviously, we like the folks we've met, for we're spending Thanksgiving with dem Cajuns down near Thibodeaux and we can't wait for the 2003 Roundup to get here already. :D

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

ROFLOL Now I just have to figure out how to put those !!!into conversation!!!!

Mark sounded just like I expected him to sound but Margaret was softer spoken and less formal than I expected. I found her accent to be charming rather than alarming as some british accents can be So our phone visit was a real treat!!!!!!! and just for emphasis!!!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Ooooh, I am ecstatic to learn someone finds me "a total comedian", because around here it's always "lighten up, Aimée". Of course, I am one of those who has lost track of the conversation as I strained to absorb Margaret's great British brogue. Vic sounded like next door, which was far more casual than I had imagined. Wingnut, of course, is just next door, sort of, and her softness comes through loud and clear while sounding so quiet. She sounds like the original earth mother with more polish, but I had expected more of a good old girl. Saved the best for last. I could spend hours listening to Wintermoor. Come to think of, I have, and never tire of that voice. He tolerates my amusement and what I mean as gentle ribbing. Nice strong voice, just what I expected. Sings beautifully, especially about a certain lad in need of trousers.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Lisa I didn't mean anything bad I think you just sounded more like me that I thought ya would. lol Margaret I love listening to you talk as well as Iris you both have wonderful accents. Eyes can we have 2 Badseeds and survive? lol Toadlily you have to be great I can't wait to meet ya.Wintermoor I would love to hear talk I am sure his accent is wonderful. GW and GH hey they don't have an accent! (wink Kim)Evert was it a nice different? Lenjo and Mollybee we have to get you to the next round up where ever it might be. Tig I have met as well as eyes and they really didn't surprise we they where as great as I knew they would be.Shoe was really no surprise he talked like I thought he would and was just as great. The rest of these great folks I have not got to talk to or meet but hey ya never know.

AIMEE!!!!!!!!!!! You're back! So good to see you. I'm with Mystic on Nana...She was a total shock. I pictured a really old lady and she is younger than me. Of course at my age that's not saying much but still - every year helps. Aimee was a surprise too. I expected a much more defined southern accent but it wasn't there. Very soft but definitely not totally southern. My biggest surprise was Horseshoe. I don't know why but I was expecting Santa Claus. I thought he was this huge jovial ho ho ho type person. Well, he's definitely not huge but he is the most soft spoken, gentle, kind, laid back person ever. Shoe is the kind of person you meet and then later say to yourself, wow, what a neat person. I'm so priveleged to know him. I mean sheesh, how many people do you know that can sing on one foot for crying out loud. Of course Margaret has that wonderful british accent that you can listen to forever. I've spoken with all that were at the ru in June and enjoyed hearing all of you as well as seeing you. But hearing the voices are nice. It's nice to put a voice to the name and even nicer to match up a face with it.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think the two biggest surprises were Horseshoe and Crestedchik. When I first saw CC post and noticed her name, I had her pictured as some punk young girl with a colored mohawk haircut!! Then when I found out she drove a truck, well, I expected her to be bigger. She's a teeny little thing. And Shoe, well, I'm with Vic, I expected him to be much bigger and have a big booming voice.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank goodness Aimee's back!!! Welcome home friend!! Cala, how could I not mention that I had met you, your lovely daughter, and Jo!! Tut-tut!! You were a big surprise to me in the flesh!! So tranquil, peaceful, soft and generous. Not that I didn't think you were all those things, especially generous, but the rest was a surprise. Yes Kathleen, I did forget the theme of this thread and did forget to mention how you slapped my wrist when I first appeared at DG!! It was about well water and how I had read that it can give one high blood pressure. I can't remember your post exactly but it sure told me where to get off!! lolol!!! I can remember talking to Lisa about your remarks to this poor displaced greenhorn!!! She was my first phone contact, my first friend here at DG, and she put my mind at rest, extolling the other side of Kathleen!! She was right!! :-) Shoe, I believe, I met the other night along with Kathleen's grandfather. He was in a movie called The Straight Story. Although Richard Farnsworth, is much older than Shoe of course!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH...ya'll are nuts! (Pleasantly nuts!)
Can't imagine why I come off "big and noisy"! (Must be the way I type?) Thanks for the compliments, ya'll. And Kathleen, that movie sounds so cool! One I can get lost in (which is the kind I prefer)! (I may have to buy it, I saw that had it listed Used at around $8.)

Hmmmm...pre-conceived notions? Cala, for sure, cuz of following most of her posts/knowledge. Didn't know she would be so tranquil. Herblady/nana...have to agree probably w/everyone that met her in Tenn, we All thought she was an ancient old one and turned out to be so young and purty.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Calm and Tranquil???? Will someone PLEASE tell my DH that?? Y'all don't want to know what Carol and Wind thought about me!!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

What do you mean shoe!! Did I not make myself clear...lol!! I have never met you but think I know you and on seeing that movie, the main character was as I would imagine you to be. :-) Now, who's nuts!!! You big and noisy - naw - that was the lawn mower!!

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Calalily was the one that is most different than the way I thought she would be. When first chatting with her way back when...I expected her to have an "authorative" voice, but reserved in personality. Her voice is actually soft and she is not reserved in personality but quite outgoing and friendly.

Everyone else I've met or spoken to have not been that much different than I had expected.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

OOPS! (He says while shaking whatever he just stepped in off his foot...).

Edit starts here HEY~! What happened to the rest of my post?

What I was saying (above, but it disappeared) was that I got the names mixed up, and should know not to try and speed read before my second cup of coffee!

As for being nuts? Me? Nawwww....! But I'm certified crazy!

I have to concur...........Shoe and nana blew me away literally!! And Iris......not at all what I had expected!
Carol and Jo were both total delights too!! Azalea, justdot, tiG, Dee _Fl, I didn't get to spend much time with.
I too expected Cala, and Go_Vols to be older, and a little on the uppity side.........but no way!! Two of the greatest characters I've ever met!! I love everyone of them, and you just wished you could load them up and take them home with you!! Mystic, I know you and Badseed know how I feel about you!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

hehehehehe, c'mon eyes - say it: you expected me to be....TALLER!!!! (Don't worry - everyone does. My parents did, too!)

I expected 'shoe to be different, but I'm not sure how. Meeting him in person was a pleasant surprise, but not a huge one. I expected (and did) meet a very nice person, but he was different from what I expected.

I agree with Jody - I expected Cala to be more authoritative (I mean, she runs a nursery business, for pete's sake!) But she's a lot of fun and bubbly, which makes her very approachable.

I expected Smiln to have shoulder-length dark hair. I have NO IDEA why I thought that she would, but I did :)

And....I'm gonna quit there - if I delve too deep here, I'm liable to stick my foot in my mouth (if I haven't already.) In general, I expect people to be taller (of course, almost EVERYONE is taller than me, but usually not by as much as I think they will be!) And usually people have the opposite hair color than what I expected. (My bad guesses go both ways - sometimes I expect blonde and get brunette; other times it's the exact opposite; go figure.)

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Go_Vols, don't feel so short: I was 5'10 at age 12, and by age 35 I had shrunk to 5'5". Still going down, by the way, so pretty soon I will be there with you! Sure gives me a fresh perspective on life. But a whole lot easier to dig in the garden being closer to it :D

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

~ looking around ~ sshhhh!! since she was just here and won't be home until tomorrow..she's been gone 2 weeks so when catching up with the threads, she will more than likely miss this one.... I'll let you in on a preconceived notion that was wrong.

I thought Carol7 didn't talk much:)

hehehe!! we had a fabulous visit, and I'm glad she does talk (only a bit less than me)!! We really hit it off well. I hope she had as great a time as I did, and she and Adam might come back and visit a bit longer **okay, not if she takes the above as serious**

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Heheheheh!....*grinning here*!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Except when Adam accompanies her and then he and I do all the talking....lol!! You hearing us Carol??

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I somehow expected Smilin to have longer hair too, and dark hair.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Susie, did you ever send that book to GW?? :-)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Louisa, uh, well, um, er, (it's still in the box)I'm writing myself a big note!!

Crossville, TN

Thanks Kathleen!! (I think)....since I aspire to be JUST like Maxine when I grow up...I'll take that as a compliment!! LOL Jo

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

ROTFLOL Jo - you got me! (or I got you!) Anyway, yes, it was intended as a compliment. I don't plan on growing up.

Crossville, TN

I wonder where Susie puts all those notes she makes to herself??? Susie...do you have a note to Bill to stop here when ya'll come out this way?? I sure hope so!! LOL Jo

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I told him, he has a good memory.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Cala did ya give him a note he has to come this way to get there? lol
