We have 9,930 photos in the PDB. A mere 70 images to get us to an amazing milestone: 10,000 images!
I was thumbing through a (gardening, what else?) book last night and it dawned on me, even though most of us are winding down our image-capturing for the year, we shouldn't hang up the cameras just yet. This is a perfect time to get many details of deciduous shrubs and trees - the leaves as they change color, close-up shots of bark (very helpful for comparing and ID'ing "mystery trees") examples of the berries and nuts that the trees are producing.
Ooooh, and then there are those cool season "weeds" that will start showing themselves in our warm-season grass lawns. A bit mundane, but how else will we know for sure WHAT weed is growing, unless there's a photo to go with the description?
Thanks to all of you who have helped us get this far (and this fast!) And please keep those photos coming!
70 to go...
10,000!! That's got to be one of the biggest plant picture databases in the world, and I can guarantee that it -IS- the biggest global collaboratively developed plants database in the world. Very cool, (and useful!)

I've noticed a slowdown in posting to the PDB lately, or at least it seems so to me. I figure gardeners in the north, like me, are spending some time buttoning up the garden for winter, and maybe this is a less pictorial time for southerners.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to winter when I can begin going back through the photos I've taken this summer. I'm sure there are lots more photos I can offer... and then, there are always houseplants!
Good idea about the trees. I've already taken fall pics of some of my plants, but I may take some pics of some of the hemlock and spruce here... even winter pics!
I've also been thinking of dusting off the ol' PDB fairy and having her request photos for the plants that don't have any image. She can post a link to the entry to make it easier for someone to add a pic!
Weez, I think it would be GREAT to see a few pics of trees with snow on them in the PDB!! I get to see it so rarely...
And there's that PDB Fairy! She's so cool.
Hee-hee-hee! Great idea ~ I'm sure she'll appreciate the fleece. ;)
Oh, man! I LOVE pics like that!! We rarely get to see a sight even close to that ~ only once every couple years when get a good ice storm. Seriously, it would be great to see pics like that in the PDB, IMHO, because they really show off the structure of the trees.
You're right about that, Wingnut. Bare trees really do show off their structure, and the icy coating makes them sparkle like jewels! I saw a program on the Weather Channel about the big ice storm in the north eastern states some time ago. All that beauty, but trees snapping off, power lines down... it was really something to see.
I took this pic and several others one a calm morning after an ice storm. I looked outdoors and just had to see if I could capture the icy branches as the sunlight panned across it. Some of the pics really turned out well.
If that one is any indication, then yes they turned out great! Our ice storms don't do much damage ~ one about seven years ago broke branches and all, but usually there's just a little coating of ice on everything. Makes the mesquites look pretty for the first time in their ugly little lives. ;) Of course ice storms down here aren't anything like y'all's, but still ANY ice at all and schools close, stores don't open, roads are shut down. I love days like that!
Well, after all the anxious moments I spent watching for the ten thousandth photo, I missed it :( And not only did I miss it, but I missed the next 97 images, too! (This is a lesson for anyone who would ask me to keep an eye on something: you should probably choose someone with a longer attention span ;0)
At any rate, after doing a little math (which I was never good at either), I *think* this picture was #10K: http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/10823/
I hope others will join me in giving a big round of thanks and applause for those who have helped us reach this milestone, and those that are continuing to go the extra mile!!!!
And, it's even shaped like a zero so we'll always remember that one as the 10,000th pdb photo :)
way to go DGers!!! this is really great!
