How do you add a synonym to 'Common Name'? Duh

Ulrich

Since common names aren't really subject to the kind of changes botanical names are, I personally don't see the need to add synonyms for them. If a plant I've entered into the PDB has a long list of names I generally add 3 (of the most common I can find) to the common name entry.

Is that what you meant?

ditto what Baa said, although I will add more than three if I find them. I try to balance the need to keep an entry from looking cluttered with trying to be as helpful as possible for those searching for the plant by its common name.

Philomel kindly added "False Acacia" to the DB; In the USA this tree is strictly known as "Locust". So, common names are sometimes more important than the scientific names. Dave, could you add your two cents please?

Oops yes i very rarely know the common names and certainly not what's used in other parts of the world. Thanks for pointing that out Ulrich

I spent 15mins last night trying to find any species roses in the PDB. I had to go through hundreds of pages of plants that just happened to have rose in some part of their name - hostas, hibiscus, iris, daylilies and cultivars of roses - couldn't get anything up by searching 'rosa'
I still don't know whether if i'd kept going i'd have found some, or if there just aren't any there.
Very frustrating

Hello Philomel Dear, by typing "species roses" when doing 'Search' in my MS Explorer I got a whole lot of results. Whatever search-engine you have will probably do the same. Here is one lead: http://www.rosefile.com/TheTables/species.html

I was searching DG PDB Ulrich, to see which were already in there and which needed to be added for comment and photos.

philomel, the Roses in the database will soon be taken care of in their own section. It's just too much informatin to leave in the main PDB (or will be when we're done.)

In the meantime, here are a couple searching tips I've figured out:

1) Try adding a space at the end of Rosa - that will eliminate Rosamund, Rosaceae, etc. from appearing in your search results.

2) When you find a rose entry, click on the genus name and only those plants in the Rosa genus will appear.

3) Once you have the massive lists of Rosa genus entries on your screen, use your "Ctrl" and "f" keys to bring up a search box. In there you can type the specific name you're looking for.

4) When you come to that entry, do a right-click and it will open in a new window, leaving your list of plants to search available for the next search.

5) If you haven't yet, add the Google taskbar to your tools. When you do, you'll have a "search this site" option, which is invaluable for finding anything and everything that Google has indexed (usually it takes about a month for the new stuff to get indexed.) Holler if you need help adding this task bar...it's a very handy little tool, kind of like having our own version of Google's search engine dedicated solely to the DG sites.

And keep your eyes pealed (peeled?) for a new feature in the PDB. Baa suggested and Dave added something today that I think a lot of you will find helpful :)

Thanks g_v that's REALLY helpful. I know there are great things in the offing with a dedicated rose DB, i was just getting ahead of myself trying to put stuff in. But your suggestions are very helpful. I'll give them a whirl AND keep my eyes peeled :)
