Black Mold in my school

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

I just heard that the school where I work will be shut down for at least 4 to 7 weeks due to mold. I've done an internet search, and learned that there are schools in many states that have gone through this (or are going through this).

Does anyone have any personal experience with this? I sure hope we can relocate, but we have over 1,000 students, so that's a pretty big deal.

G.L. that stuff is so scary! There has been an outbreak of it here over the last year or so. The University had it really bad in one of the wings and walls had to be torn down. Has anyone gotten sick from it?

4 to 7 weeks is a large chunk of school time. I hope they find some decent temporary accomodations so the kids don't lose that time. The buildings have to be cleaned out though! I had trouble breathing and thought I had a cold. But then it got worse and I thought I had pneumonia. Things got so bad I was sure I was goung to die. Fevers, chills, and cough that kept me in constant pain. This went on for 2 months before they finally figured out I was having all of this due to mold spores in the walls of the house. We moved out since it was a rental and it still took me several months to get better along with changing to a Dr. that was not so blinded by weight (mine) that he actually bothered to notice I was dying of something real! Bob just got a runny nose from it! But mold spores in the lungs are nothing to take lightly!

Granny, a few of the schools in our local district (Southwestern City Schools, Franklin County, Ohio) were infested with molds, including black mold, but they were cleaned during the Christmas break. It didn't take 4-7 weeks, only about 10 days. They now have a contract with a company that specializes in preventing future mold outbreaks. I can find out more information about them, if you want.

Lisa, Yes, several students are already on homebound instruction for that very reason.

ZM, Wow - you had it bad! The counselor in the next office and I have red eyes every day by the time we leave. She also gets bad migraines, but never thought it was anything in the environment.

LL, That's encouraging. Maybe it won't be so long. I wish/hope/pray that they will relocate us to another bldg somewhere rather than totally shut down classes.

Here's a picture of the Gardeness Trish helping me read the article online. She is hiding her feelings of shock.

Good that you've got a friend there who can help you get through this :)

In the Madison WI schools, there have been several schools affected: one last year was shut down for months. They are continuing to fight it in local schools both here and in nearby communties. Some of the information may be available on-line, as it was such a problem in the one school in particular. There was a lot of adjustment issues for all involved. I do not know if this is a new problem or just newly discovered here.

OH GL, that is awful.... what are they going to do?

They said on the News tonight that we will not have classes for at least 2 weeks. So I guess they're looking into finding us another place. I don't know. I do know that I'm going to visit grandchildren during my time off !!!

might as well GL, enjoy your time off.

Granny, when I was in high school, they closed many of the schools because of the fuel shortage (remember the coal shortage in '77-78?) My high school met in the local grocery store for 2 months. I am sure your administrators will be able to find something for a few weeks as needed :)

Too cool, Granny! I bet none of the boys will give excuses about missing school at the speedway! Maybe my Indianapolis brother will encourage his local high school to meet there? LOL Much better than the old A&P was.
