Personal ad from my Pyrex Bowl

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

STBL* 9" Pyrex bowl seeks friendship/possible marriage with single, unattached Pyrex lid #7403-PC. Owner will gladly pay postage to see this happen...

Do any of you have a rubber lid that will fit a 9" Pyrex glass bowl? My lid is cracked and almost to the point where it won't stay on the bowl. I'm kinda hoping one of you might have broken your 9" bowl, but never gotten rid of the lid.

ROTFLMBO Sorry i can't help bring a little joy into your bowl's life gw!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I have heard of the "Young and the Restless", but this is "The Old and the Lidless"! You know Murphy's Law, Gardenwife. As soon as you find a new lid, you'll drop the bowl!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

in the event u don't find a new lid, may i suggest to use one of those cling wrap plastic for cover. i like the Walmart store brand, they do cling tight too ;). just a thought.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I was thinking the same thing, MaVieRose! I've seen the covers advertised on television, but I haven't tried them. That might be a good option.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

actually, i like the Costco brand "Sealwrap",used by people in the food industry. but they are a wee bit expensive. although in the long ran, it pays off for itself. 12" x 3,000. i've used one roll for 5 yrs. the plastic wrap really stay very snug to whatever u cover with it.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Oh, you are talking about the rolled wrap! I thought you were referring to the new bowl covers that one of the wrap companies are making now. When I was a young girl, my mother used to have those bowl covers that were plastic with an elastic edging...they looked like little shower caps!

Yes, We buy the big rolls of plastic from Costco, too. We also buy their big rolls of freezer paper. In fact, we've decided we're happily married because our marriage has lasted through three large rolls of freezer paper so far!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes, i was referring to the plastic rolled wrap. they sure are very nipty to use. i used them all the time. i have never bought the new bowl covers, since i like the rolled wraps.

i know exactly what u mean, about them lasting a long time. i got introduced to them the 1st time when i was in the catering business. the 5 yrs. i was referring to was when i used them commercially. i bought a roll last year, i am beginning to wonder if it will outlive my lifetime LOL! i also like the rolled aluminum foil and the freezer paper. they sure are very handy for one's specific need. not to mention the neat box they come in... make it easy to do wrapping of all sorts.

No replacement lid for you but I do have this information if you want to give it a try.

I used to buy those shower cap bowl lids from the Vermont Country Store catalog, and they do last a long time, so they're worth the money. I think the ones I've been getting in the supermarket are from Saran Wrap. You can reuse them lots of times.

But if Kim wants a lid that will stay on when you're taking a bowl of something with you somewhere, the snap on lid is really the only thing that will work. I know I don't have one. My Pyrex bowl is so old it never even HAD a lid.

suky

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Aaah suky, think how lonely it must have been all its life
;(

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

LOL - I never imagined there'd be 10 replies to my poor bowl's thread! Yep, I've been using cling-wrap when I store stuff in the fridge with it, but I really miss the lid when it comes to making rice in the microwave; that bowl's the perfect size for it, so we use it several times a week for our rice. If I put a plate on top, it effects the cooking because the plate absorbs microwaves. If I put on plastic wrap, it melts. I really need a lid for my poor bowl.

Now, on the flipside, I have TWO Pyrex lids in pristine shape...But no bowls to match them. Broke 'em both. ;)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

lol Kim - I have a bowl that needs a lid. How about it??

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Kim,
Do you have any outlet stores nearby. The outlet mall I go to has a corning ware outlet that has a lot of Pyrex, I'm sure I've seen lids there, too. It's over 1.5 hour drive so don't get there too often, but I will check next time I do.
Debbie

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, I never thought about an outlet store, Debbie. Good thinking! I have seen an Anchor Hocking outlet store, but haven't checked into Pyrex. Hmmmm, I wonder if there'd be any lids at the Goodwill or Salvation Army stores...

But if I buy my bowl a lid, that is the equivalent of prostitution, isn't it? No, wait - I could just consider her a mail-order bride and that's the postage costs.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Gardenwife, I think I have your lid. There was a whole set of these lids in the repo trailer home our church bought for resale. Send me your address and I'll get them all out to you the end of the week.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Really? Great!

My Pyrex bowl is jumping up and down in exuberance, but he's getting a little too close to the edge of the counter for my liking...

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Will you be posting photos of the wedding? Tell the exuberent Groom to be patient, he wouldn't want to frighten the poor bride before they even get a chance to meet and although it is not recomended they live together before the wedding they should at least meet and hug to see if they are compatible before commiting to a life long relationship since marriage should never be entered into lightly!

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Making rice in a microwave??

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Yes, Tim! It works great! In my 9" Pyrex bowl, I put 1 cup rice and 2 cups water (or a little less water is fine, too). Voer, and microwave 5 minutes on high, then 15 minutes on medium. Ta-da, that's it. Our microwave lets us set all of that at one time so there's nothing else to do for the 20 minutes it cooks.

I usually just buy the cheap white rice, I bought a bag of Zatarains brand long grain rice at a good price this week, and it turned out really nice and fluffy.

I'll never cook rice on a stovetop again!

Great info on the rice, Gardenwife. I do ours in the electric rice steamer, but this is a good alternative. I have a great microwave peanutbrittle recipe, too!

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.........

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I'd be a bit concerned about sending some young innocent lid to this worldwise pyrex bowl... after all, isn't there a history of violence? I mean, didn't it already blow its lid once?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

*bump* My bowl's still widowed. ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Oh, gw, I knew there was a reason I never 'unwatch a thread! It takes me back to a simpler, more innocent time! Well, at least we have some new potential 'lid owners' on Dave's now. Good luck!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I haven't had good rice since I forgot what box I packed my rice cooker in. It makes the BEST rice, and turns itself off when it's done!

I like (and have) many kinds of rice, but like the long grain browns and wild (not really a rice) best but some of the Lundberg rices come a very close second, esp. the Chrismas rice medley.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sorry, I knew this thread was about lids, not rice, LOL.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

This time of the night, darius, we should be able to slip in a bit of rice conversation. Yes, use my electric rice cooker all the time. What a great invention!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Where's Roadrunner? I bet she has some choice words to share regarding rice! ;)

Rice (ri-su) One of those wee little bean looking things that fills you up and has no real taste. Jo "Webster" M

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Kimberley - do you have a pic of that thar bowl??

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

DW puts a glass plate on top to make rice. Same plate I get to nuke hot-dogs on. I can hear Howie groaning, "microwaved hot-dogs?" Yeah, they split and don't look as good as one off the grill, but they are hot and wrapped in bread with dijon make a quick snack. (DW won't eat hot-dogs) Git yer lid yet? Frank

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We nuke our dogs, too. My bowl misses the lid, feels the plastic wrap we use on her is too sheer and makes her "look fat". I don't have her picture handy, but you know the type...ribbed sides, clear glass, an ego as big as Texas. That's her. She's so transparent.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Gardenwife, why not try a nice plate for her lid. Perhaps she will feel special.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We've tried a plate, but it didn't seal the same way in the fridge. Her perfume intermingled with other foods.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Ah, yes, she wants something with a romantic lip lock. I was thinking of the cooking process, not the chilling process when I mentioned the plate.

Do you have a pic of the lonely gal?

Louisville, KY

gardenwife, Your Thread is better than any "soap opera" or "reality" TV show I have seen recently. What was so great is the simplicity of the subject and the imput from all these great folks trying to resolve your problem. Hey, maybe Dave could set up a Problem Solving Thread where folks could get counseling with their "personal" problems, etc.

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

gardenwife, I have a 9" pyrex bowl that I use for rice in the microwave and I never even thought about using a lid for it. I use 1 cup rice to 2 cups water just like you do, 6 minutes on high and 10 minutes on medium.
