Hi, Dave. I was unable to post a photo to the PDB forum here: http://davesgarden.com/t/362584/
It gave me this message:
Warning: Unable to create '/www/forumpics/Weezingreens_1033148679_3': No such file or directory in /www/garden/inc/util.php on line 223
failed to copy /www/forumpics/Weezingreens_1033148679_3...
Here's the image I was trying to post:
Problem Posting Image
I just added a picture to the thread (and then removed it so I don't hijack it with my tests) and it worked fine. Thus, I can't fix it until I replicate the problem.
If the image a jpg before you upload it?
How big is it (dimension and file size, if you know)?
Dave
Hi, Dave, thanks for the quick reply! The image is a 522x319 jpg (136KB). I had tried to post it twice, but failed. However, I just tried again and it posted, so I guess it was just a little burp or something... thanks again!
136K is a very big image, and that is probably where the problem is occurring. This was reported to me by someone else the other day, and I really need to make it more polite, rather than spewing that nasty error message out. It is on my todo!
dave
I guess I should have been more clear, Dave. I don't think this image is particularly large. My understanding was that an ideal image size was 640 x 480... this one is only 522 x 319 dpi... is that too large? The KB I listed are probably the uncompressed size. I was going by the size before posting. Take a look: http://davesgarden.com/fp.php?pid=370276
Yes, I understood what you meant. 136K, being the size before upload, is how much data must be transferred from your computer to my computer. If it takes too long (as high KB files sometimes do) it will time out and fail.
dave
I havea few times uploaded some pictures as PNG and the size has been over 1 MB, and the data has gone over the Baltic sea and Atlantic without any problems.. OK, there has been a couple of timeouts :}
OK, Dave, I guess I still need clarification. Can you tell me if this image was too large? On my successful attempt, it loaded in a timely manner. I am not particularly well versed on image properties, but why is this image too large. If the size is 522 X 319? Am I missing something?
Weezin, it has to do with the size of the file more than the size of the image. Try saving it as a .gif (if you can - there's a MS bug in the newer versions of IE, and it doesn't appear they're going to fix it anytime soon - that's another story) But when I use DS's computer, which has an older version of IE, even though his machine is slower, uploading the .gif is much faster than uploading the .jpg because the file is a fraction of the size of its .jpg counterpart.
Or just try lowering the quality of the JPG file if you can do that in your editing programme. When i save my JPG it asks whether i want a large file or small on a sliding scale 1-6. If i save at 4 it seems to be about right for DG.
Good point, philomel. I always save my own jpgs at 75% (my program lets me go from 1% to 100% and I don't notice any difference between 75% and 100%)
dave
I think I might as well give up at this point. Everyone is suggesting how I can reduce the size of this file, yet no one has convinced me that this file is too large. The picture was saved, as I've already said, at 522dpi x 319dpi @ 72% resolution. On my third attempt, this file loaded to Dave's in an expeditious manner.
What happened with this particular photo is unimportant, as far as I'm concerned, since I was evenually able to post. I merely want to know whether the pictures I'm submitting are in proper size and resolution.
If I have to save all my photos in gif to post them, it would be a tremendous job and a pain in the neck.If I drop the quality of these photos much more, they will not be worth posting. I'd be happy to email a photo, if that would help, but I understand I can't do that through the website.
OK, I've tried one more thing. I checked several of the images on the photo forum for size and they range anywhere from 843x663 (1.4MB) to 500x375. Mine seems to be equal or smaller file size than most. Then I went into the PDB forum and downloaded Dave's corkscrew vine photo to determine it's size in my photo program. It was 425x640 at a resolution of 96 and was 800KB. I am either incredibly dense or there is some misunderstanding about file size.
I'm a little computer illiterate to be able to explain this properly as i don't really know what i'm doing myself LOL
I'm sure hawever that you don't need to save them as gif files as i send jpeg quite OK.
The image size (eg 640 x 480) is in number of pixels, not dpi.
The resolution also has a bearing on how many kb an image is.
However it sounds as if your resolution is lower than the one Dave posted that you looked at.
At this point i can only conclude, as you've sent many successfully!!!! that you just came across a glitch on this occasion and the problem had nothing to do with image size............
????? :)
I'm sure you're right, Philomel. At any rate, it is pixels I mean. As usual, you have summed it up in a nutshell while I've been beating a dead horse, I fear.
LOLOL Poor horse. and i don't think so at all, but perhaps we'll never know the true answer to this one.
I would just like to know if my photo was too large or not, and if so what is acceptable. I should probably just do this by email and not bore everybody else. I'm just concerned because I have saved hundreds of photos at this resolution and they have loaded to Dave's and traveled by email without a problem before. I can't imagine re-saving all these photos to drop the quality yet again.
That size and resolution sounds fine as i understand it. It must have just been a hiccup. So carry on as before and see if it happens again - my guess is it won't
(Says she sticking her neck out - it'll probably try and prove me wrong now)
thanks, Phil.
Yes, the resolution is just fine.
thanks, Dave. I surely didn't want to have to start re-editing all my photos!
OK, Dave. It's happened again, only this time, the "thumbnail notice" appears, but no image. I tried it twice. I checked the size of my image, all was OK. Both times, this is the PDB forum entered from the notice offered in the PDB. Here's the thread: http://plantsdatabase.com/t/363012/
