Gardener's Journal: Changes coming

I'll be making changes to the Gardener's Journal application this morning (I know, you all must be sick of these updates I've been doing, especially when things get broken in the process).

There are no visible changes to the work (hopefully) but the code was almost completely re-written from scratch into a Scif module, and I want to get it up so people can start testing and see if anything broke anywhere.

I expect the new GJ app to launch within the hour. I will post here when the upload is finished, so after I make that next post, if you have any problems, I'll want to hear about them.

Thank you dave for your hard work and efforts to constantly improve the features of the site. I appreciate it, even with a few bugs. Nothing ever gets broken - just temporarily different than we're used to.... I'm sure we'll all be patient and understanding through the changes...

I like the changes when they make things easier or nicer. :) So the big question (drumroll)..........will the journals be more friendly to use?? LOL

The update is complete on the edit side, so all journal edits from now on are using the new code.

dave

Alrighty, the update is complete on the external side, too. So, from here out, any bugs you find, please do let me know, and again I apologize in advance for any bugs that I know will creep up.

There is an end in site. With each module that I convert here at DG, that will be the last time any major change like this occurs in that area.

dave

Badseed: It will get easier to use, but not yet. Currently it looks just like before.

However, I have written a wizard-type application that will hold ones hand as they go through a journal creation, and I personally think it makes it much easier to get started.

I'll be adding that wizard soon (maybe today)

dave

The changeover is now 100% complete, and all links have been adjusted to the new journal code.

You'll notice that now you have to go to "/ej" instead of "editgj" and "/j" instead of "/journal". The old links are deprecated, but they will redirect to the new one, so as not to break the old links.

Additionally, I made some theme changes to most pages on the site, so it might look slightly different now, but more consistent across the site.

Still TODO:

Update the other half of the admin area
Update contest pages (I may not do this until next year)
Update the tradelist application (oofta, but this has been on my todo for a long time)
Update memberlist
Update search engine (add back in search journal, tradelists, etc)

Additionally, I wrote a new ecommerce module for Scif during the past 2 days, and that is ready. I'll be moving the DG Store over to it shortly.

Finally, the tradetracker needs updating.

Once this list is complete, DG will be 100% Scif-based and I can then start rolling out new stuff with much ease. I can't really do anything new until I complete these tasks.

Again, if you find any bugs today, please let me know on this thread!

dave

No bugs today? I have a hard time believing that it went that smoothly.

Okay, I have a possible bug, if it'll make ya feel better. ;) I think it may be something having more to do with the settings on my mom's laptop than anything at DG, however.

When she goes to a DG member's page and clicks that member's journal link, what she gets is the page letting you search member journals -- not the member's journal page.

She tried this with Roadrunner's page and with mine and got the same result. I clicked shift+refresh thinking she might be viewing a cached copy of the member page containing an outdated link, but it didn't help.

I, on the other hand, am able to go to the journal link on these pages and access the member's journal just fine. What do you think could be causing this? I am 85% brain dead right now; the 15% remaining is just keeping my vitals going and not much else. My tech-support-for-family-members hat is creeping low over my eyes and I am about done in. Help? ;)

GW you know I had to play I went to your page and clicked on your journal and I get the list like you are talking about, I get the member journal list too and not your journal.

I also checked to see if I could pull up GW journal, but I am also getting the list

Me, too.

I have this bug fixed. (Anything else?)
