Fans of fungi

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I have recently begun an interest in fungi and wondered if there were many of other enthusiasts out there. Photos seem thin on the ground and I know how variable individual species can be. I wondered if it was worth setting up a FDB (fungi data base) Are there any supporters of this idea out there?

Me :D
It would mean a lot of work anyway, fungis are a lot different than plants...

We should do it anyway. I have a LITTLE to contribute, I'm sure there are others here. We have many edible fungi in Tennessee, tho I only gather a few I am _really_ familiar with. Chanterelles, Giant puffballs, Hen-of-the-woods, Morrels, Lesser puffballs.
Oyster mushrooms occur here, I'm just not that confident yet in my skill at ID-ing them.

Me too. I used to collect fungi and would like to begin again

When you talk about fungi do you mean the large fruiting bodied types or fungi as a whole?

Mainly mushrooms and toadstools but I dont see why it cant be broadened.

I'm considering the work involved in setting up such a project, would any of you be willing volunteers to help set this up? Should this be something that goes ahead it might be worth considering that a lot of the smaller fungi are difficult to distinguish (or even see with the naked eye) without a very powerful lens and a huge amount of research into the ID of fungi.

Maybe it should stay as mushrooms and toadstools then, at least fungi you can actually see :)
What work is involved Baa?

This is really a question for the amazing Go Vols but it will need at least a list of things to aid description (like the options in the PDB) since we aren't going to be able to use the current PDB options.

Right Im with you. Presumably that would be things like colour, smell, gill shape, colour when bruised, likely location etc.

Lyles, TN

Yes, and stem characteristics, presence or lack of rings and "skirts", spore color, etc. And the obligatory lengthy disclaimer.

Well, I have lots of pictures DH and I have taken over the years (since digital camera purchase). I just don't know the names of most of them, though I do have one or two reference books on the subject. I have pictures of the shelf kind too, and some other beautiful ones that tend to grow on dead trees.

Here is a pic of some mushrooms (fungi) I found growing on an apple tree in my backyard. I was surprised! I really have fun finding them on trail walks and taking photos of them ..but right here in my own yard was great!
