Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

She has no name yet, remember she's only 4 weeks.. I think the christening will be in next month.

And yes, this might be her first internet picture :)

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

So babies don't get a name until their christened? And that's when they're a month or two old? Is that in all of Europe?

Wow - this website is so educational~! I never knew that.

Here in the States, babies get named within a day of two after birth, so the birth certificate is filed right away with the state department. The babies get christened any time within a week old to a year or so. Some whose parents do not attend church don't get christened at all. :-(

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Well, it depends on your religion. Most people in Finland are Evancelic-Lutheran. Europe is soo much different so I think no....

I think it is 1 or 2 months after birth or something whe nbabies get christened here. My other cousin and her family belong to "Free church" or whatever it is in English, they get christened when they are older, 12 to 18 or something.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

If they aren't christened until age 12 to 18, then they must be given a name at birth, right?

Did you hear about Michael Jackson who has 3 children now?
1. Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Junior.
2. Paris Michael Katherine Jackson.
3. Prince Michael II.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Yes I saw and heard about Michael Jackson have 3 kids..

Evert,, congrat on ur new cousin.. so adorable!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

The christening was today... her name is now Silja Mirette Merituuli.

Here she is with "her cake"

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

She is smaller than the cake! Her name is lovely. Is the j in Silja pronounces or silent?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Yes, she was very small. I also got to carry her for a while :)

j is pronounced. English speaking people probably pronounce it "sailza" =) Merituuli is pretty funny name, it means "Seawind".

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Awwww, what a neat picture to remember her special day. She's so sweet, Evert! I like the name Seawind! What does Silja mean?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Silja doesn't mean anything.. Nor does Mirette. Mirette is pretty rare name.

This was her christening suit. I, my brother, our mother, her sisters, almost all in our family since 50's have used this.

Evert, What a beautiful christening outfit! That baby looks just like a doll lying there.

I love your tradition of everyone wearing it. My former neighbor made one for each of her grandchildren when they were born. I like your tradition better.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

:) I hope she won't grow up too fast LOL x)
When wearing the suit, boys have light blue ribbons, girls have pink.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

>>:) I hope she won't grow up too fast LOL x)

they do grow up fast...so, so fast...

(I posted this earlier but some how only one part came out, I had to edit to add the second line)

We use the same colors Evert. She is adorable, and the Cristining Gown is beautiful. It is so nice to keep up traditions. Jo

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Too bad you don't like her!!! LOl!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Awwww, what a sweet baby! And what a wonderful tradition of wearing the same christening gown. Our family also has a gown: it was made in 1861 by my great-great-great grandmother for her first child. It was framed in a shadow box and is in our living room right now. My brothers and I wore it, my dad wore it, his mother wore it (so did her older brother), her mother wore it, all the way back. I was the last one though. So sad when a tradition has been broken.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Evert, somehow I missed this thread when you posted it. Congratulations. She is such a miracle, isn't she? How many cousins do you have?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Azalea, I do like her :P

I have got 12 cousins. :)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Don't know how I missed this precious bundle Evert since babies seem to be a part of my life just recently and I'm hooked!! My little Charlie also wore the gown that has been handed down through the generations. Welcome to our world Seawind!!

Cullman, AL(Zone 7a)

BEAUTIFUL BABY! Congratulations on the new cousin.

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Evert I have got 9 little neices and nephews. The youngest is little Heather. She is now 9 days old. In the UK the baby isnt allowed out of the hospital without a name so you have to think of one before they are born!

sorry forgot to say she is very beautiful. :)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

:)

Why are all babies so sleepy?
Parents here think of the name before babies are born too. If I would have been girl, my name would've been Iida. What an ugly name. If my brother would have been girl, she would have been Emilia. Now his name is Jarkko Emil. My whole name is Aimo Evert Johannes. :)

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

dont you like Aimo either then as you use your middle name here. I think babies are sleepy because they have to reserve energy in order to grow. All they need is food and nothing else should interfere. I would have been called David if I was a boy and nearly, as a girl got called Joanne. Think I prefer my given name.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I used to think Aimo isn't a really nice name, but nowadays I use it because it is purely Finnish, old name, and it's from the family ;) It's not very popular anymore though. I've been called Evert since I was born but it was just a made up name, it's harder to say and it's not even Finnish. German I think.

In Finland we have name Taavetti, it would be like "David". Dave is Taavi "in Finnish" I think. Not all names have a comparable pair in Finnish of course.

:]

Psilo, lovely niece you have there.
Evert, have they got a name for her yet? it's been a couple of weeks hasnt it?
In the US too youhave to name your child before you can leave the hospital, in fact, you pretty much have to name her within 24 hours if not sooner for the paperwork to be complete, since most people stay in the hospital only 24 hours when giving birth.....(unless you have a c-section)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Yes, I wrote the name above there to some of my posts. Silja Mirette Merituuli.
I think you have to give your baby a name in hospital here asap after the birth - if he/she has somekind of health problems, just for sure.
