Perennials: Favorite fall bloomers

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It's not quite fall yet, but one of my favorite late summer bloomers are my cardinal flowers. I think I got the first ones from the wild years ago. I have since moved and brought some with me. These are some of the old ones and I have many more new babies blooming this year.

billy - Tall bluestem should have a "turkey foot", that's how you can identify it. :-)

woodspirit1 - Love that true red color! I have heard they like it moist, so I was thinking of planting some by the hose. Very pretty.

Mine are planted at the bottom of a slope, where there is a little rock wall; quite moist there. The ligularia love it there too and bloom just before the cardinal flowers.

sounds like a nice combination. :0)

Prairie, it does have the turkey foot. I think that is how I decided what it was. I did get my Miscanthus Zebrinus planted. I've been keeping it watered!

It looks like it will make it billy, but it looks lonely. :-( I have mine planted with light purple asters with a yellow eye, butterfly bush, Chocolate eupatorium and Fireworks goldenrod. Next year I have plans to add some coreopsis. Maybe you could add a bed between the shrub border and the grass that would incorporate some perennials?
