Almost a tragedy

Talked to my son's SO this afternoon and I'm still reeling and shaking my head. After the 2 oldest grandkids left for school, Shannon and Asher(3 yr old grandkid) went to Wal-Mart. They did their thing and left the store. Ash was tightly strapped into the shopping cart and they proceeded accross the parking lot via the clearly marked pedestrian walk. Well....a woman who Shannon said was about 70 did NOT stop at the stop sign and did NOT stop at the crosswalk...she hit the cart..and KEPT ON GOING!!!! Shannon pitched a bunch of change at the car which still didn't stop. Now she was not about to leave Ash in the cart on it's side and race after the car so she started to scream "SOMEBODY STOP THAT CAR!!!" The hit and run was witnessed and the car stopped. Police and ems were called...thank God Ash and Shannon seemed to be okay..no visible injuries and the reflexes etc. checked out. BUT Shannon chose not to press charges!!! Now I know we all dread the day when we must give up our freedom of driving, but Shannon allowed as how the woman, once stopped, was very upset and sorry for what happened. HELLO...what if Asher or Shannon had been seriously hurt??? I'm sorry, but if I hit a shopping cart with a small child in it,don't know and keep going PLEASE someone take the keys and car away from me!!! It will be interesting to know the final outcome as Wal-Mart IS pressing charges. I can only hope and prey that tomorrow after the shock wears off that both Asher and Shannon are okay and the woman driving the car has the good sense to hang up her keys.

Oh my gosh -- I am SO glad to hear your family's okay, Ginger!! I agree with you that she should have pressed charges. I'd think that lady's driving indicates an ongoing problem, and the next people to cross her path may not fare so well.

So many elderly people are still driving when they shouldn't be!!! I've seen OLD people getting their driver's licenses renewed when the couldn't even pass the eye test!!!!! Something is wrong here!
I am so glad that your family came out okay it this case. But what about the next time. Stop these incapable people from driving!!!

I am so glad the kids are ok.

I just talked to Giner and she wanted me to let all of you knw that she is having a copmputer problmes and will be back on this thread as soon as she can. If it was me and I had done this type of driving I would be the first to trun in my D/L. Sometimes we don't have the good sense to know when the time has come...but it is very had to do. Jo

So scary for you - I always thought there should be stronger tests for those of us who are really not capable of good rsponses. Not just and age limit - but reflexes, sight, hearing, etc.

oh my!!! so very glad things weren't as bad as they could have been!! I wondered the other day as I got my license online how they would ever know if some can't see anymore. Worries me

I sure am glad that the children are OK and I hope the older lady does the right thing- either go for senior driving lessons or give up her license. I would request that of folks who are talking on the phone and driving-had another close call.

My wife & I took the 55 alive course here in MN. It is almost a joke. They only teach how to stay out of the way.
Try to tell you how to drive a freeway & talk about driving a motorhome. (You should be required to have a commerical license for those!) How about a state drivers test once a year? Would make for better drivers. I had drivers training in high school, but at that time it was not required. All you had to do was pass a test, so most people over 50 may never had training.

I am so sorry to hear about the accident and I am so glad that your children were ok, I know they will be shaking up for a while. I would have pressed charges, who knows next time someone will get hurt. I have no compassion for hit and run drivers. I can't believe that she didn't see that she hit a cart, or at least hear it and if she didn't then she shouldn't be driving.

Talked to Shannon yesterday...the boys were with their mother for the weekend...no calls about Ash having any problems, so I guess thats good. Shannon's shoulder and hand are rather sore. She clearified more her reason for not pressing charges...the deputy said the state's attorney would press charges reguardless of wheather or not Shannon did. The woman will most likely have her license revoked...at the least suspended and then restricted. Thanks all for your concern.

Thank God for that, now maybe no one else will be hurt by her.
