On the way to the park with the dog. I stopped to admire a small garden along the way and noticed a hosta that had 7 large snails munching merrily along on it right next to the side walk. Out of habit I picked them off and stomped them in the gutter. A second later this man came rushing out of the house screaming at me "cease and desist picking his flowers"
And then he proceeded to tell me I had a lot of gall to stand there in broad daylight and stomp his beautiful flowers. I bent down and took off the last snail and held it out to him asking if he would like to stomp the last one or should I put it back? He turned red and stammered something so I tossed it into the gutter and crunched it.
After we talked a few minutes he wished me a good day and went back into the house but on the way back from the park he was out there waiting for me with a bouquet of dahlias and an invitation to stop by and enjoy his garden anytime I felt like picking snails!
I told him about our cyber garden here and he thought that was pretty neat...might even have to go get a computer now that he knows there is something on it worth looking at!
His wife of 64 tears grinned behind him and ever so sweetly said ...."I told you so..."
A funny thing happened on the way to.
See.......most good deeds are rewarded grandly!! I could just envision this happening to you, Zany gal!!
"eyes"
LOL!!! bet his face was so red!
lolol
oh my...what an experience... Well, hopefully he will get a computer and come join us. Next time you go by there, tell him we're all looking forward to seeing him gardening "online"
That's great, I would loved to have been there, just to hear his chin slapping on the ground...... PLOPP!! -
and oooohhhhh the sound of those snails.... YESSSS!!!
Well done Zany girl!!!!

Way-to-go, Zany! :-)
Was that 64 years of 64 tears of marriage. LOL It couldn't have been tears.
A great story Zany. It is so good to have you back posting. I have missed you so much.
LOL Jim, I re read that and still didn't notice that typo! Since she was grinning at the time I would say Years not tears unless they were from laughing! I am really starting to get to know this neighborhood since I have to take the dog out on a leash so it is kind of fun meeting all the people around me. Quite an assorted bag of personalities to meet! I have been kind of like a kid...smile and say hi to everyone, young and old alike and I have to admit that I have not been the least bit shy about it either! Believe it or not a neighbor years ago told me that I was so shy it took her months and months to even look her in the eye! Now I can't imagine me being like that!
Hey Zany, You can come and crush my slugs anytime. Apparently, I got some in with my plants last year and now they are taking over my garden had not noticed them till recently but I had seen the damage. Slugs are not common here so I finally found slug bait and now I am out spreading the cheer of the bait around the flower beds. But if you want to pop slugs you can come hunt them here. Lani
Wonderful story! Luv it! I think Zany just made two new friends! Sure would be cool if we all sent those nice folks some postcards from DGers all over the place! Might really make their day, eh? Pictures of our flowers/favorites, a funny quote, etc. It would really make them happy I bet! (Can you sneak the address, Zany? I'd send one!)
Zany never did think you were shy!! I loved your story and happy that it all ended splendidly. I bet you've got a friend for life there!! Sounds as though our Zany has settled in quite nicely in her new surroundings thank you!!
[Actually, to me, it sounds like she's got her new garden.]
Tell the girls (& guys... sorry guys), what they need, and you'll be in there doing the necessary.
Somehow I have the feeling you're trying to sneak in there.
ADRESS PLEASE, and as 'Shoe says, they get postcards from lots of us.
*licking the stamps*
Wintermoor
Great story Zany!!!!! I think Shoe has a great idea by the way just let me know the address and I will match his postcard and send a card with some seeds!!!!! hehe
sue
hmmm..Postcard PLUS seeds? She's raising the ante?
Or is it spelt "antie"? Or "auntie"?
Oh well, ante up, Ruby!
Good job Zanymuse! It sounds like maybe he will begin to mellow out a bit after you had a go with him.
"Was that 64 years of 64 tears of marriage. LOL It couldn't have been tears." I agree ~ couldn't be tears. How could it be with a man who apologizes like that?! Yes, please send me their address, too. I'd LOVE to send them something ~ do you know if they like tomatoes?
I'll have to see what I can do about an address since everyone here uses the post office boxes. The High school is just a couple blocks away and mail seems to vanish if left at the houses. They have every square inch planted now so I really don't know where they would put another plant!
I forgot the best part of the whole thing though which was their names! He is Sonny and she is Sunshine! And they tell me those are their actual names not knicknames!
They have lived in the house since they were married and raised their family there. The town grew up around them over the years which they feel is a blessing since they feel they are getting to old to live out in the country now.
I look forward to getting to know them better and so does Max since they both made a huge fuss over him. Needless to say we will pass that way on every outing!
Life is just full of those little opportunities. Who knows how many we miss along the way, but when we seem the most in need, if we embrace the moment, something good happens. Nice story, Zanymuse.
Sonny and Sunshine?!?! You have GOT to be kidding! That's too awesome, Zany! Looks like you HAVE found your new garden. ;) AND some new friends. How totally sweet. I just read the story to Kenny and he couldn't get over it, either!!! If you ever do get their address, please let me know. :)!!!
Well, Max and I just came back from our morning outing. Sonny was waiting in the yard for us and Sunshine had a fresh pot of coffee brewed! While I sat and chatted with them their grandaughter took over Max and had quite a romp with him at the park. They both came home panting and layed down together for a cuddle on the grass together.
As I left I passed a few houses down and the little lady that lives there greeted me so I stopped to chat. Her first question was...Now how in the world did you get that "Old Grump Sonny to warm up so fast?" LOL I told her it must have been our mutual love of snails.
Tommorrow morning Sunshine has decided she is going to join us walking so she can get some excercise too. She has a bad hip and we go slow enough that she feels she can handle it and she slready checked with her doctor to make sure it would be ok. He was glad to hear it and told her that so long as she was not alone it would be fine.
Doesn't God move in mysterious ways! Here you were ...not happy about the move...and now it is as if the neighborhood has awakened to your presence...HMMMM??? There is a reason for everything About the shy part...I belive it Zany...I was the same way...now I never cease talking...to family, friends, or strangers. Jo
Zany tell Sonny and Sunshine we all said hello and enjoy your Saturday morning walk!!!!!!!
sue
Zany, this is too cool! :D Thanks for telling us your story!
That is awesome! New digs, new friends ~ what else could one want? :)!!!!!
I decided that since life has thrust changes upon me it was time to treat it as a great adventure and go along for the ride. I have set a goal of getting to know at least 2 new people every week and to explore my community as if I were a tourist who had never been here before. I started out tonight by searching for this cities web site. You see, I went to High School here for my Freshman and Sophomore years
But of course it has changed tremendously over the years so it is like a whole new place. I have run into several old schoolmates and realized that by following our own paths to the present we have all evloved into very different people.
I have no desire to go back to those years gone by but do want to rediscover the optimissen about the world I felt back then. So hopefully the months ahead will be filled with stories of people, places and things I discover right here in my neck of the woods.
I have enjoyed this thread immensely! Zany, you really do have a touch. You will be in danger of being elected mayor! Next thing we know, you will be leading all the stiff-jointed old ladies to exercise, and the old men will be standing in line to ask garden questions. Just think, if you weren't a dog owner, this might have taken years or even never happened. I think I might have to give some thought to getting the new dog my kids tell me I need. Holding out for a Bichon Frisé, though.
Aimee, I am not certain what a Bichon Frise' is but it sounds like it would be sifferent enough to have people stopping you on the street just to ask about it! So get the dog and start your walking shoes!
Zany, do a search and look at this little cutie! I fell in love with them when I saw the first one, and would have bought one despite the astronomical price, if I hadn't known it would break my pound puppy's heart. She was laid to rest under my bedroom window in October of 2000. Small b****y dogs are always more expensive to maintain, more temperamental, more susceptible to skin problems and various other conditions, and I really don't need that worry. I should have a big, durable dog outside to scare off all forms of varmints. But I resist because there are pastures with cattle on three sides of me, and eventually an outside dog will succumb to temptation and chase them. I lost a German Shepherd that way. Can't blame the rancher for shooting a dog that's chasing his cows. I myself have shot some for chasing my sheep and goats. So I wrangle with these thoughts. Yes, a BC will indeed stop people on the street, because they are adorable to look at and usually have great charisma.
