Adding veggies to the PDB

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I added a couple carrots, but since they usually are grown for the root, rather than the foliage or the flowering (they are biennials that are ready to eat in the second year), I got so confused about how to include them that I abandoned my efforts for the time being. I made a generic entry for "carrot" that included info about how to plant the seeds, save the seeds, etc., but wasn't sure if that was a good way to do it, so rather than add to your editing problems, I stopped after that one entry.

I would love to include info (from the packets and my own experience) about length of time to maturity, etc., but can't find a fit in any of the existing categories.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think some special checkboxes are in order for the genus Daucus. Vols, do you agree?

Yep. In fact, I need to get cracking on getting the whole spectrum of veggies (all the gourds/cucurbits, root crops, leaf crops, brassicas) set up similar to the entry form now in place for tomatoes, beans and potatoes.

Veggies is important to me for the PDB. As I said on the phone a few weeks ago, I'm interested in root crops (including potatoes) and cucurbits primarily, and all other veggies secondarily.

I envision a very complete veggie section of the PDB.

Thank you Kathy for suggesting this, and Dave and Go_Vols for agreeing. I'm new to flower gardening, but I'm a veggie gardener at heart. I had to veggie garden to afford to feed the troops, and it got in my blood. I love this site!!!!

Oh, wonderful Joan; I learned all I know about veggie gardening from reading books, then finding out most of what I learned wasn't correct (at least for me). I will know who to bug for more information then! Or at least politely ask. I do hope you jump in and help us as we beg for information!

I would have loved to have learned gardening from an expert but I didn't know any when I took over from my dad; he didn't do a whole lot of veggies, so he couldn't help, only told me what didn't work for him!

Teri, as if you didn't have enough to do, can you give me a rough timeline of when I should look for the new part? I will hold off until it is ready, at least before I start entering the many varieties of veggies I have grown the past 6 years. A very big list! But better to wait, then less editing work for you.

What is your prize for doing all the editing in the challenge? I know you deserve a major one! But then all of you do, Dave, Trish, you, and all the other volunteers who keep the site up and smooth.

My tentative timeline (the one I'm willing to publicly commit to) is this: I want to have all the roses in the PDB first (you have another email from me on that subject, BTW :) and then the cucurbits, followed by root crops and brassicas, with alliums bringing up the rear. I'd like to think I can get them all done by end of next month, but it may take a bit longer, depending on how fast the roses go.

I will try my darndest to get the entry form for all major veggie groups up and running by early next week. That will allow you to go ahead and enter whatever plants you wish, and when we do the big batches of varieties, we'll make sure to look for duplicates.

Yay on the floribunda file! I will check mid-to late next week for the veggies. I admire you for admitting to a public deadline ;)
