Garden Recipes/Remedies?

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi Dave,

Do you ever get tired of all the questions? I was curious about the best place to find Garden Recipes. The Recipe forum is mostly human food. "Eyes" gave me some tips last night in the chat room & I didn't know where else to find homemade garden remedies.

Thanks!

hmmmm, does this sounds like a good suggestion for a new forum???? I have seen "garden recipes" posted in several different forums. I wonder if it might merit its own forum??? I would really enjoy that!!!

Morph you might try starting some threads in the herb fourm. I know we have a few members that are real big in the medicinal herbs and remedies. Your questions just might get them to post. lol

To my thinking, don't we have a forum for organic gardening? I don't even garden outside (yet!), just like all the info here! (and the friendlyness!)
I would think that organic gardeners would be the most likely to post there.
Just my 2 cents.

I'll go take a good look at the Organic gardening forum & the Herb forum, too. Thanks :)

Well, any bites????

There seems to be some good info in the organic gardeing forum. If I was looking for a particular rememdy, I'd go there right now & ask. I don't think the Herb forum would be the right place to go after I perused through it.

Then I got to thinking, how many homemade remedies are there for the gardens? Maybe just a handful? Don't know...

Not many people seemed to respond to this post, so maybe it's not as high a priority as some other areas of interest to felllow members. Really, my interest was sparked because I had the problems right in front of me hollering for help! Otherwise, maybe I wouldn't have been as interested. Again, I just don't know...

Morph, I'd just post a request whenever you are looking for a remedy for a specific problem. Not just Organic Forum but you could also try the Vegetables Forum as well as the Garden Foes. (Perhaps there first.)
There actually are many home-made remedies, as well as home-made myths, or what appear to be.
I've experimented over the years w/lots of different recipes. Feel free to email me if you like. (Maybe it will jog something in my brain that I've tried. At least I could tell you if it worked for me or not.)

Thanks, Shoe ~ I may just do that! In Tuesday night's chat room, "Eyes" gave me two recipes; one for cucumber beetles (those beetles just love my gourds!) and another for the mildew that was on the leaves & stems. I pruned out all the infected leaves, but the stems still have the mildew. What I need now is something that can help get rid of the mildew that is there now. Any ideas on that? I used baking soda, vegetable oil and water in equal proportions to protect the good leaves. But, I don't think this recipe works on the mildew that's already there.

Well, I posted my mildew dilemma in the vegetable, organic and garden foes forums. No one replied so I take it there aren't many cures! Here's a link to what I posted: http://davesgarden.com/s/349331.html

Okay, here's my bizarre plan now. I purchased tea tree oil to use in homemade laundry soap (I've very dry skin & this is just one alternative to possibly help with that). That aside, I got to thinking that I might be able to mix a small amount of the tea tree oil into the recipe that "eyes" gave me for mildew prevention in the garden. This recipe seems to be great at protecting uninfected parts of the plant. But, the majority of the plant is growing from a main stem that has the mildew on it. Obviously, I can't cut it, but I thought maybe the tea tree oil might help since it is used for fungus on humans.

Am I crazy? Does anyone think this might work? Even the garden centers have given me no hope. They've said to wait until next year and just use preventative measures before the mildew appears.

Not exactly what I want to hear now when I've got a good crop growing, but off a mildewed stem!

GO FOR IT!
That's one of the things I like about the plant world and our interaction w/it...plenty of room to experiment.

Shoe, I started using your milk recipe last night. I'm hopeful and will apply again every night for probably a week or so. I'll then evaluate the results. Thanks again for you advice & help! Two gourds harvested; who knows how many to go? LOL...
