PDB Challenge - Congratulations!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

On July 26, I announced the second annual Plants Database (PDB) challenge, with the goal of adding 2,000 photos and 1,000 comments to the database during the month of August.

Then we noticed that a great number of comments and photos had been added in the days and weeks before the contest was announced. So we decided it was only fair to include these entries in the contest tally. And so we backed up and counted everything that was contributed from the beginning of summer (June 21) through August 31.

Just like last year, members went wild adding plants, comments, and images to the PDB. Here are the total numbers of entries made during the contest time period:
14,872 plants were entered;
1,202 comments were added; and
3,574 pictures were uploaded

It's an understatement to say it takes an incredible amount of community spirit and cooperation to add this much information within such a short timespan. After last year's contest, we determined the PDB had joined the ranks of the most massive and useful databases in existence. Now we can confidently declare the PDB as quite possibly the largest and (hopefully) most useful databases of plants and images in the world.

The member who contributed the most comments was smiln32, who added comments to 233 plants. The member who contributed the most photos was carolann, who added 314 beautiful photographs.

And (as last year), we credited each member for each item they added to the PDB for a random drawing; the member whose name was randomly selected is Weezingreens. Each of these members will receive a prize from Dave and Trish (who have my undying thanks for donating the prizes :)

I also want to extend my personal THANK YOU to every single member who has made any contribution to the Plants Database. To echo Dave's sentiments from last year - together we have made (and continue to make) something pretty amazing, and we could not have done it without everybody's participation!

WHOOOHOOOOOO!!!

Well done Smilin, Carolann and Weezingreens :) Excellent job!

Thanks to all who inputted something on the PDB for your great efforts.

Congrats to carolann and weezingreens. I don't know about them, but my fingers are tired. :)

Thanks to everyone else who contributed, too. We have a lot to be proud of.

A huge congratulations! You 3 have an E-mail waiting from me, so go check your mail and let me know your address.

It's absolutely mind-numbing how big the PDB has grown this year, and it is 100% thanks to the efforts of everyone of you. It's just awesome.

Well done, everyone!

Dave,

I could almost see your head shaking back and forth in amazement at what has been done on this web site in the past year. :)

Do you ever stop and reflect on the enormity of what you've created here?

It truly makes a difference in people's lives.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, I must have been asleep at the wheel not to see this! I've been waiting to see the results to see if we met the goal, but I guess I was looking at Dave's forum... who knows. I'm ashamed to say, I was so busy the last couple days of August, that I didn't really get a chance to check out all the new entries to the database. Everytime I'd post something, I'd see all these posts in between my last one, so I knew we were humming right along! I've made a mental note to take a vacation in the database this winter and see the results of all our good work.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

A winter vacation in the database! Sounds good. I hope it is big enough for all of us LOL. The Tropical section is where you will find me, trying to get warm ;)

Weezin: I got your email, and replied asking for more information, but since you haven't replied, I presume you didn't get it. Your mail is definitely not working.

I do have your addy now, so let me know if you would like a DG coffee mug, or a DG cookbook, and I'll get it sent right out.

This email thing is getting curiouser and curiouser. Not sure how to check on it.. will ask DH when he gets home. He's got all the info on our server.

Well, Dave, coffee mug or cookbook...hmmm... as tempting as the mug is, the cookbook will give me a little smattering of all my friends at Dave's, so I'll take the cookbook. What a generous gift...thanks!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Weezin, you sure deserve it. All the time I kept seeing awesome photos you were posting.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Lupinelover, but I was just one of many...seems like I saw your pics whizzing by, too, but I didn't have time to see them all, so that's going to be my winter thing.

Brooklet, GA(Zone 8a)

congratulations again.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Got my coffee mug today, Dave. Thanks so much. It's wonderful. I can't wait to use it. What a delight.
