Now that Jianhua has graciously provided a pronunciation guide for jinshajiangense, I have another one: lixianensis (which I'm guessing refers to the species being found in or near Lixian China?)
Thank you in advance :)
How to pronounce (#2)
Need further info.'X lixianensis'--X is ...? ?only when i get it can i tell you if lixian is a place or a person's name.and then we will try to pronounce .
Jianhua, it is Fritillaria lixianensis - here's the entry: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/53258/
I see, this is a kind of wild lily.
Lixian is a county's name,(sorry, don't know where it locates.you know ,China is a very large country,): )
Pronounce it like this: li as in Lee (a surname);x,there is not this sound in english, some like SHHHHHHH(an interjection word, used when someone wants another to seal up his lips so that the secrect will not be leaked out),and the second i is the same as the first one,and an as in ant.
okay, let's practise together:lee - shee- an (shee and an is one syllable)
For any questions regarding the pronunciation, contact to me .we will meet in Yahoo Messengers by microphone.
Once again, thank you Jianhua!
Go-vols,don't mention it.it is my pleasure.
Arsenic,i think it is pronounced as lee-shee-an,En-sees
My question. Lycium chinense,Belamcanda chinensis.what is the difference between chinense and chinensis?
Jian
All Latin and Latinised nouns and adjectives have to have a gender specfic or neuter ending. In botanical terms both names have to match gender or at least one be neuter. Usually feminine ending is 'a', masculine 'us' and neuter is 'um'.
Chinensis is not an obviously feminine name but the 'is states that it is indeed a feminine noun, a simple 'e' ending denotes masculine in this case. Endings with 'ense' or 'ensis' denote a place or country's name such as China. As far as I know there is no neuter ending with a place name.
I hope that helps!
Baa,
This question puzzled me for long.i tried
to disolve it,but failed.your detailed
explanation is of GREAT help.
Thank
U!!
My pleasure Jian :)
I worried a bit because I got a bit confused reading it out loud to myself after I posted it LOL
Baa,
Great help indeed.
While reading botanical names, often meet latin surfixes -um,
-us,-a,-sis,-ense,etc.now you have told me they are of genders' difference. know how to make them out now.
Thanks again.
