Terry or Dave,
I noticed that there are two entries for this plant in the PDB. Should one of them be deleted?
Thanks
Dame's Rocket
There is also 2 entries fro Saponaria officinalis. And Rhodochiton.
and one Brugmansia Dr Seuss spelled wrong.
Thanks, everyone! The extraneous Saponaria officinalis entry is gone. The Rhodochiton entries are for two different species (unless I'm looking in the wrong place), so I left them both.
The misspelled Dr. Seuss was corrected, and all the information and photos in both entries compiled into one, and the duplicate deleted.
If you find any others, please let me know :)
I think R. volubile is a synonyme to R. atrosanguineum.
Many apologies - I didn't even THINK about the possibility of synonyms. I'll get it fixed ASAP :)
:D
Okay, now that I've changed the Rhodochiton entry, it leaves me with another synonym question. One of the (many) synonyms of Rhodochiton volubile/atrosanguineum is Maurandia.
Can someone tell me if this is a spelling variation of Maurandya (aka Asarina)? I can't find any references for Maurandya atrosanguinea, but I do find Maurandia listed as a common name for other species of Maurandya.
I feel a nervous twitch starting if it is....(I still haven't got the Maurandya/Asarina/Maurandella straight in my mind :)
Let me try to give you some help:) I have never seen the synonyme Maurandia listed for Rhodochiton; I suspect it is a common name (like it is for Maurandya...?)
Maurandella - 1 species:
Maurandella antirrhiniflora (syn. Asarina antirrhiniflora)
Maurandya - 2 species:
Maurandya barclayana (syn. Asarina barclayana)
Mayrandya purpusii (syn. Asarina purpusii)
(Maurandya erubescens was previously included; but is now called Lophospermum erubescens)
Lophospermum - 8 species:
Lophospermum erubescens (syn. Asarina erubescens, Maurandya erubescens)
Asarina - 1 species:
Asarina procumbens (syn. Antirrhinum asarina)
(Previously included:
Asarina antirrhiniflora, now called Maurandella antirrhiniflora;
Asarina barclayana, now called Maurandya barclayana;
Asarina erubescens, now called Lophospermum erubescens; Asarina purpusii, now called Mayrandya purpusii.)
Phew;) Nomenclature by RHS, 1996.
That does help with the Maurandya/Asarina question. The other reason I started wondering about Maurandya (or Maurandia) being a valid synonym is that both Rhodochiton and Maurandya refer to Lophospermum as a synonym, so there is a common denominator.
Here are a couple links that list Maurandia and Lophospermum as synonyms for Rhodochiton:
http://nature.jardin.free.fr/grimpante/on_rhodochiton.html
http://www.semarnat.gob.mx/vida/lophospa.htm
Ugh!!!
Maurandia isn't a botanical name it's a variant spelling used by some European countries for Maurandya.
I cannot find any reference to Lophospermum or Maurandya as a synonym of Rhodochiton, they may be much older synonyms but certaily not recent.
Personally, I think any name with "lopho" in it should be kept for aesthetic reasons, and to heck with the rules of synonomy.
Jus' my 2 cents of course.
;)
