How to pronounce?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

jinshajiangense (or Jinshajian)...

I manage to mangle the botanical names enough to know I'll completely foul up the pronunciation of this one if I don't get some help. Hoping someone can help :)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i make up my own names!;]

Evert has the right idea

jinshajiangense - Jin-sha-je-ang-en-sey is how I'd pronouce it.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Yes,i can do it .
Lycium chinense (wolfberry) means Lycium native to China.
So ' X jinshajiangense' means X native to Jinshajiang.
Jin means gold;sha, sand;and jiang, river.Jinshajiang is a great river running through southern west China.
Three syllables jin-sha-jiang.jin as in jingle;sha as in Shaq(the new NBA star);ji as in Fuji, ang as in long.
Hope you can pronounce it correctly and fluently.

Jianhua, thank you for the pronunciation and the meaning of the name! I'll list it as jin-sha-jee-ang-EN-see, (and most of us will have to say it aloud at least a half dozen times before it starts to roll off our tongues :)

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Go-vols,
My pleasure.
You have gotten it,i am sure,
though there is a little twister.):

Vols: If I'm reading it right, you might want:

jin-shah-jee-ong-EN-see

(I changed ang to ong). Reading Jianhua above, "ang" is pronounced like "long".

There is a little joke that goes about here on how Chinese name the new born babies. It seems that they drop some utensils in the kitchen and listen to the sounds they make..... Chiang, chen, jun, hun, thuing...... May be Jianhua can confirm this. ;}

Thanks, Dave :)

Try this:jin-shah-jeeong (jee and ong is one syllable, when pronouncing ,slide quickly from jee to ong).
I confirm this,Dinu.):what you said is just one example.
here is my uncle's name story.one of my uncles, when he was born, his parents tried to give him a great name, expecting him to be a great man when he was grown-up.they thought and thought, but all the names they could think of had been called by neighbors or relatives.so they finally gave up and decided by the first sound that they heard early next morning.when they opened the door that morning, they heard one person was asking another,"SHA?"(means what).
so they named the new born baby as SHA.
My uncle owed this name all through his life.

That's very interesting info. Jianhua. So, I no longer consider dropping utensils in search of names as a joke! According to the Hindu system, a baby is usually named after the star under which it was born. The first letter is of value. If followed, it is said that the person will benefit greatly when that particular sound is called during his life. The time, accurate to the second, will be of importance to prepare its horoscope. And most of them follow it and use the names in the Sanskrit literature.
