bat boxes

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

hi all

Floridian asked me about boxes for bats to roost in and have their young (pups). I'm sending her the information in the post tomorrow. I know there are a few of you who would want the same information but it would cost too much for me to this on a regular basis.

Floridian has agreed to be the US contact for this info which she will copy for you and mail to you.

have fun

I would love to have this info!!!! Had two of my grandbabies out last night and there were 4 bats right over head. Emily hollered 'yeah' over and over!!! and with all of our mosquitos, we need all the bats we can get.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I too would love this info! So add me to the list! I will gladly pay postage or what need be.
Let me know!!
We have a pond that my old neighbor (TraciS) had and it is now nothing more than a bredding ground for those blood suckers!!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Would it be easier to scan it and post in someone's journal? If I can get a copy, I'd be happy to do that. :)

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

cant put it on the web as it is copyrighted material and I'd in the for doing it. mail is easier

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Ahh! Okay.

I'd like the info, as well, Mark. My son lives down the road from us, by the river, and he says the bats come out every night there, flying quite close to gather up the mosquitoes, etc, that are attracted to people who are visiting outdoors.

I found it quite interesting that the bats aren't readily visible to most of his guests. Rob says they fly an irratic zig-zag patterns that makes it harder for the eye to track. He says they fly quite close and are about the size or a golf ball. He also said they seem to show up in our late summer... about now.

I have no idea what kind of bats we have up here, but it baffles me as to why they would be here so late. Surely they don't stay here all winter! Rob seems to think that the days are too long in the summer. When the days are longest, it doesn't reach dusk until the wee hours of the morning, and it doesn't remain that way long. What do you think?

Thanks Mark!!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I really would like the info on building bat houses too. We had one hanging on the wall of our unfinished basement, and our son and his friend got him into a box and put him outside so we could continue working on the basement. I want them to stay around here, and my BIL who's helping us also wants to attract them to his place. Floridian, I'm sending you my info. Thank you both so much!!!

I have a list started! Just waiting on the aptly named "snail mail". I'll let y'all know when it gets to me. - Stacey

Bats are so cool to watch. We have a yard light mounted on a pole on the end of our shop, the moths and other night flying insects are attracted to it. Periodically the bats come through and in a few minutes there are no visable insects. They fly very fast so we just see them for an instant. This happens over and over every night. Occasionally I find a dead bat, or we see one roosting on the rough siding on our house, they are about small mouse size and black. We built some bat houses using plans we got from a neighbor who belonged to some bat society that publishes a magazine. If you do a search you might find plans for bat houses on the web.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

The plans arrived yesterday so I will start copying them today. Here are the addresses I have so far.

I figure $1.25 on the cost - that's $1.06 postage plus supplies (This money actually goes to my wonderful, generous boss! He's the one letting us use his supplies.)
Does this sound okay to everyone? LMK! - Stacey

Edit to say Thank you Mark, this information (in my brief scan) looks wonderfully informative and easy to use!
