Dave - What do you think about this.....

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I was thinking some sort of seed saving photo album would be useful to everyone. Nothing that needs to be done immediately but maybe something to plan on for the future. It would be nice if a few volunteers could contribute a couple of pictures of the seed pod & seeds of some of the popular plants that they collect seeds from. A lot of the 'how do I save seed questions' could be answered if you could just see a picture of the seeds on the plant. What do you think?

Other questions that are common when starting seeds are ... "What do the seedlings look like?"- "Are these weeds or the seeds I planted?". Some sort of photo album for seedlings would be a great help for new seed starters. There's a big selection of flower pictures when you do a web search for something specific but if your looking for a picture of seeds or seedlings you'd be lucky if you found one.

Maybe it would be something that could be added to your plant database - An emphasis on the seeds starting & seed collecting of plants - with pictures.

As I mentioned on the other post...adding a section to the faq of seed saving...everyone could contribute their knowledge of the plants they have and how/when/where to harvest the seed and provide pictures if possible. Think this is a great idea! I know I sure could have used a lot of help when I started seed saving/growing...still need a lot of help, LOL.

I'm thinking something along the lines of an area that is different, yet similar to, the current FAQ. It would be what would become the entire plants database.

It wouldn't be setup in a chapter format, but rather a list format. Each section of the list might be for a family of plants, for example. Within each section, the following questions might be answered:

1. How is this classified (annual, perennial, shrub, etc).

2. How do you germinate these seeds? This includes all germination instructions, including timing.

3. When do you transplant outdoors; how to care for the plant during the growing season.

4. Post-growing season: How to harvest seeds. If perennial: special instructions for preparing it for the winter.

5. What does the plant look like? Pictures of the plant during growing season, as well as pictures of the pods of seeds, pictures of seedlings, etc.

That's all I can think of right now. Am I heading in the right direction here?

That would be such a good thing. Go for it!

I love it. You can't find hardly any info on collecting seeds and often it is hard to find pictures. When you do they are never of a seedling or pod and seeds.

I think this is a GREAT idea!!! I've been searching the net for DAYS on end and can't find anything like what you're describing. I'm sure a LOT of people would use it!!! (including ME!) I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Hi everyone,

I can take a pic of sand and submit to the forum...look just like love-lies-bleeding seeds I received last week! I thought someone was playing a joke on me by sending me sand.
BTW, what does llb seeds look like?

This is a few pictures of seeds of different plants

This album contains pictures and some information of how the seeds are collected and contains some pictures of pods in a few instances.

Hope this helps a little.
If you go there and find it helpful, you can send me pictures of your own and I will put them on the site to help others with different plants that are not there.

Which is another idea: Can we somehow post pictures of ourselves so we can see what each other look like? Poor David, all these new suggestions.

Not this week, though. The little time that I'll be working on DG this week will be on the plants database.

I added GrannyLois' feature request to my TODO, though. It would be fun!
