Annuals: How coleus varieties develop

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

this plant is called "Careless Love" notice there are several stems that revert to other kinds. On this one plant there is "Cranberry Salad" top center with the spots. The "Line" on the upper left side and bottom(yellow). The stems in the center are "Careless LOve"Streaked red and yellow. And a solid Red form on the lower left. This is how many new colors develop..they take cuttings and they stay somewhat true...sometimes revert though.Thats all the fun of these.

Oh my goodness that is incredible. I have the Careless Love. I'm hoping mine does something wonderful like this. I'm overwintering all of my coleus as it was hard to find the different varieties I have. Gosh now that its almost fall I found some at the market that I didn't have and they were only $1.

I have to have a patchwork quilt like the display you created Kyle...sorry, not originality here, just a copy cat with your permission of course :-)

Copy what you like....... :-)

So your saying most coleus are sports???

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

CC yep....hybridizing of these is difficult. So most are sports.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Very interesting!! I had no idea they did this - I have the Carless Love too, but haven't seen any sports like these.

I'm going to have to keep and eye on mine to see what it does.

Really cool.......learning something every day from this site.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

so Kyle, I have a new one and half the plant is a dark burgundy with a thin green edge and the other half is striped with the two colors. so I should keep them as seperate plants??

Hamilton, Canada

TiG, I think you should as according to what Kyle is saying what you have is a new plant that is the spot. The one he posted in the pic is the dark burgandy with the green edge and these are all the sports that came off from it.
I have a variety that I've not seen posted here and it must have one of these sports as the leaves suddenly appeared different colors. I'll post tomorrow so you can see.

Eclipse, the man who hybridizes for Flower Fields spoke at a meeting once, he said the same thing!! He said 'some' are from seeds, but most just appear. Mums are the same way, most of the varieties available now are "sports" of some other variety, not grown from seed.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala thats very true from experience.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I've had some that did that but had no idea they were sports or that that is how new varieties happen. How very interesting.

Kyle, don't forget me. I dumped all mine last year so I'm counting on a few from you. I'm really only interested in dark colors this year like blacks and burgundy. I can use any of them though. Beggars can't be choosers, right?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)
