VCR or DVD

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I like the DVD is better it more real sharp great picture and VCR pretty good too but DVD is best that I just bought from my son sell to me. I love it.

Which you like VCR or DVD?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi Red Rose, I think the DVD is replacing the VCR. Everytime I go to rent a movie, there are more DVDs and less VCRs. I still use the VCR because of all the tapes I have saved. Although I have been noticing recently, the VCRs are losing their clarity and will soon being going out with the trash. Can you record a program on the DVD?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi golddog
It should have record a program on DVD. I still have lot VCR tapes and have 4 VCRS.

LOL, Redrose - you sound like my dad with all his VCR's! One thing I have always hated about VHS is how they fail. Before long, I am going to have our wedding video burned to DVD or CDR before it goes kaput. I doubt the friend who made it for us still has the master copy after 10 years.

The picture is wonderful on DVD's, yes. We finally got our first player one two weeks ago, just a cheap Apex AD-1100 at Wal-Mart. It cost under $65 and works really well. We watched a show on TechTV and they said the cheapest ones are a good bargain, so go for them. Like they said, the store where you get them is the main concern - what is the return policy/customer service? Plus, this Apex brand is one hackers like, too, because it's hackable, LOL. But we're not quite *that* geeky. Yet. ;)

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I have a DVD player on my computer and a small TV that has a VCR.

Can you record on DVD yet?

I am looking for a large TV-VCR-DVD combo for the living room. Anyone have a brand preference? And are you TVs digital-ready, or do they have to be? I don't watch a lot of TV, so I am not up on the latest technology. If analog goes, will everyone's old TVs be obsolete?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Greenfield, IN(Zone 5b)

I don't know a whole lot about this techy stuff, but there are DVD burners and the price is way up there! Let alone the price of the blank DVD.

The DVD offers the best picture and sound quality.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You're better off price-wise getting separate components, and that goes for quality, too. There are combo DVD/VCR's out there. And there are DVD burners. THe prices are, as dignbloom said, way up there. Go to mysimon.com and search for DVD VCR combo and other similar phrases and you'll get an idea of what's out there.

What DVD software would y'all recommend - we got a DVD-ROM drive when our CD-ROM went kaput under warranty and the company sent us an upgrade to replace it. We have used Cyberlink's Power DVD player, but it plays choppy. Our friends tried it on their system (much faster, better memory, etc.) and it played choppy on theirs, too. We'd like to be able to enjoy movies on the laptop since it has the drive!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Dennis & I bought a DVD player last fall, and we were pretty excited about the first movie & all that great sound and clarity. However, since we have an older 30" TV isn't really the best place to show DVD's, I guess, since the all seem to play in wide screen. Sometimes I feel like I'm looking through a slat in the corn crib! We've returned to renting VHS tapes because we can use the full screen.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Also it has Play Station 2 can use watch movie just like DVD, play game also play music too. That cool so, I don't play PS2 or Dreamcast.

Weezin, I think most DVD's that you can rent or purchase have a viewing option where you can select the size of the picture. I don't know if it will fill your entire screen but it's better than "looking through the slat" :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

We tried that, Go_Vols, and couldn't seem to find that option. I'd sure like to be able to use the DVD's more often. The quality is so much better.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

On some DVD's, the letterbox version is burned on one side of the DVD and the full-screen on another. That's how our edition of "The Princess Bride" is.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Gardenwife. I'll check the boxes next time for full-screen formatting. Maybe we'll start watching DVD's again!

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Hello, gardenwife, and all...

I use PC Friendly for playing DVD's on the computer. It seems to work fine. I think when you rent DVD's, some are faulty and don't play well. It MAY not be the program or your DVD-ROM.

There is now a Panasonic TV-DVD-VCR downstairs. It arrived yesterday by surprise.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow, how come surprises like that don't arrive at my house??? (The only "surprises" that await me in my den are empty cereal bowls and discarded socks! Ewwwww!!!!! (*grin*)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Go-Vols: I'd put the dirty sox in the cereal boxes and put the boxes back on the shelf... maybe they'd get the hint!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm. That's not a bad idea. But man, oh man. The odor that would emanate from my pantry. I keep thinking that at some point those socks *should* be strong enough to walk themselves to the laundry :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

If they're strong enough to walk themselves to the laundry, I'll bet they could do it with a lot of "sole"!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I can't resist anymore~~~ If your nose runs and your feet smell, you are built upside down. giggle Lani

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Good one, Ponditis! If I'm built upside down, you could turn me over and I'd look like Dolly Parton! Sorry, RedRose, we've digressed!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

LOL Weezingreens. Back on subject. I love my son's DVD when he brings it over but I haven't taken the plunge to ownership yet. I have been too busy buying Hosta's and don't have the money for things as DVD's and players. Maybe for Christmas? I can dream can't I?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Lani if you're really really good maybe Santa will bring you one :)

Your quip reminded me of my grandma's younger sister (who bears more than a passing physical resemblance to my grandma.) She tossed that one out at the last family reunion I attended. I hadn't ever heard it before then, and she delivered it with such a deadpan expression, I almost missed the twinkle in her eye to clue me in on the joke! Thanks for the good memory and chuckle!!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

As old as Santa is, I doubt that he'd even have a clue as to what a DVD is! He'd be more likely to leave you a package of BVD's, wouldn't he? It's always a disappointment to get jockey shorts for Christmas...especially if you're a woman!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Here, I am lucky if I even get a card for Christmas. Mostly I just get to fix a big dinner for all to eat and buy gifts for the others to open. LOL DH grew up with nothing ever for holidays so he doesn't buy anything. So now I just don't worry about it anymore I just buy more Hosta or another plant for myself when the season arrives. That way I always get something I want too.
go_vols I used to have a poster on my bedroom door when I was a kid in the 60's that said my quip. I have always loved the saying. Glad you got some memories of a loved one from it.

Alfred, ON(Zone 4b)

Ponditis
are our DH brothers? *LOL*

here it's the same never gifts!! well almost never I got 2 in 14 years.

I bought a DVD player with Karaoke function for my DD.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I have gotten three in 28 years. But he is so good in other ways that most of the time I forgive him for that. But I will hit him up for that DVD player. LOL I know I will have more luck getting one from our now unemployed son.

Alfred, ON(Zone 4b)

Oh Ponditis,
I did not put down my DH, he is also very good in other ways. It is the way he got raised.

good luck with the DVD player quest.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

my son works at a video store and they are selling all vcr tapes and replacing with dvd's. soon vcr's will be a thing of the past!!!!
I bought 6vcr movies last night!!! We have both dvd n vcr players in the house and van.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Our friends start buying gifts for each other early, and can't wait to give them to each other, then go get a few more little gifts for Christmas day, LOL.

I saw a bit on DVD players last night on TechTV and the fella made the point that those who do not like the letterbox format can just hit the ZOOM button once on their remote and it will make the picture full-screen. I hadn't thought of THAT, d'oh. ;)

Howie joined Columbia House for DVD's and we just got the "freebie" selections. He figures we buy DVD's for our friend at Christmas, anyway, so why not get some free for us while we're at it. I can't wait to see "The Matrix" with all the extras now...Yippee!!!

DVD hands down. my DH alwys kidded me because i never rewind tapes until i about to watch it.
Plus i love how you can go from scene to scene on a DVD and go exactly where you want to go instead rewinding and fowarding with all the guesswork. and DVDs have to many extra features like behind the scenes and all kinds of goodies.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Zameluzza, I know you weren't putting down your husband. It seems that even the good guys don't buy gifts sometimes. They just think that they don't have to because they are so good and they are almost right because they ARE so good that people like you and I forgive them for not getting us something. It just leaves more for us to have to do for ourselves like participating in the co-ops. LOL I love the DG co-ops. Almost would rather have a DH like this than have another frying pan like my Father used to buy for my Mother for about 18 years. He liked frypans and all the new surfaces would make him buy another one. LOL
