I didn't know where to post this. These flies are not in my garden but in two bathrooms. At first I thought it might be because of the plants but only have plants in one bathroom and the other room is upstairs with no plants. They are squat, thick bodied with wider wings than the normal housefly but a little smaller. I'm wondering if they are coming up the drain pipe into the wash basin. They seem to like water because I tried showering them with the stuff and it made no difference. Any ideas??? Please!!
Weird flies??
Mags, do a google search on Drain Flies, and flies in plumbing.

Thanks jerrie. Don't know why I didn't do this in the first place as I usually do!! :-)
Oh dear!! They are drain flies (Moth fly) and I feel kinda sick!! Wouldn't have thought it could happen in a new home, new drains etc!!
One article says it can be caused from compost to close to sewer and drainage/plumbing lines.

Ewwww, yucko. I wonder if that's the kind of flies mom's had in her kitchen. All of a sudden, she had all these flies buzzing around her kitchen windows tring to get out. They have a/c and there's no way they had any doors or windows open long enough for them to all show up like that at once. I'll tell her about these. How GROSS, ugh!
First hit at Google.com for drain flies was from our very own Ohio State University! Woooo - go Bucks! http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2071.html

It's sickening isn't it. The compost is miles from the house but there is the pipe that emits water/moisture from the a/c - it drips constantly. We are going to put a sleeve on it of sorts and direct the water away from the house. Meanwhile I've put loads of vinegar and soda down the drains.
That article says these flies are small -- mom told me the flies they had suddenly appear were blue bottle flies, that irridescent kind. She was beside herself when dad went around with a fly swatter...All those smeary fly corpses to clean up! I suggested he might enjoy using the shop-vac to finish his hunting, and he did. Whew! ;)
lol Kim, I'm on your mum's side!!!! Bluebottles I know, bluebottles I can handle!! :-) No sign of 'my' flies since yesterday - keeping my fingers crossed!!
LOL, sorry ladies, but flies here are part of life! Face flies, heel flies, blue bottle, manure bees, carrion flies, deer flies, horse flies, can't imagine a day without them!
lol is right!! Kathleen I know flies. I'm used to flies!! But these tricky devils are something else. They take short leaps and refuse to be intimidated and they are INSIDE the house!!
