Cool days,crisp nights,apple cider,homemade donuts,trees in color,harvest festivals,fishing,hunting,no mosquitos,etc.,etc.
I'm ready!
Autumn - Who's ready for it?
Well, I'm no where near ready, but it appears that it's here. I just hope autumn lasts for a LONG time! I'm not ready for winter.
I'm looking forward to it, altho it's a bit of a ways in the future. Ahhh yessss, cool nites, warm days, putting limblines out for catfish on the river (w/DD), getting in the farwood and spending time splittin' it, mowing the grass "one more time", watching the changing habits of the deer (and also looking for scrapes and rubs), sittin' on the deck w/a cool soda watching/listening to the day end and the night begin, and then (eventually) hearing the gas furnace kick on after the first frost, then being beckoned to warm our feet over the floor grate while sittin' on the couch, side by side w/a blanket over our legs, and shootin' the breeze or watch a bit of TV. Ah yes....ain't nuttin' like it!
Man Shoe you make me want it to be fall/winter!! Sounds good to me!! I'm right with ya! I love that time of year too but I am still always happy to see good ole spring time roll around too!
noooooooooooooooooo, not yet!!!!!!!!!
Funny you should post this. I was at the card shop yesterday and they had the halloween stuff on display. I too thought, Oh no!! But in a way I am looking forward to it. I mean, how many of us can actually work in our gardens with such oppressive heat! In my six years in the US I have never experienced such a hot, dry summer as this year with more than average days of above 90 degrees and throw in the humidity. I challenge anyone to work on compacted clay trying to make new beds in those conditions. I guess this grannie has just run out of steam. Apart from dead heading in the early morning and collecting the Japanese beetles, that's it for me. Evenings now pose an ever increasing threat in the form of West Nile virus, so that's out!! Yes, the gardening year here in Virginia is way too short for me but I'm not really looking forward to winter either, except that I will cook more and the aroma of a beef roast on a Sunday sounds pretty good to me right now!! Shoe don't you think it's time you wrote that book, or even started on a few scribblings as you while away the last two seasons of the year?? :-)
okay, I'll take fall so that we can all work in the gardens. but it has to be above 55 at all times!!!!! there, now I like it:)
Nooo - too many things still haven't bloomed for me. It seems a shame to pamper things all spring and summer to have such a short time to do their thing. Some leaves on our trees have already started turning yellow, it's been so dry. I don't really mind the Fall so much as the dread of the cold of winter. I just want to hibernate then.
I was thinking the same thing PJ! that's why I'm not ready. But maybe fall is what they're all waiting on??
I love fall and spring. By fall I am getting weary of gardening, especially in the weather we have had this year.
Not ready for winter yet, though. I love the cooler days when you need a jacket at night and it is warm during the day. The frost can hold off for a while so the flowers can last a bit longer. After all the hard work I do hate to see them not last very long.
I am putting in two new beds this fall. So am waiting for the cooler weather to work on them. Have them both laid out and the sod off. Now need to work the soil and improve it as we have a lot of clay. They both receive very little sun so hope to put one bed in hostas, ferns and the like. The other will be low maintenance shrubs and bushes.
I am looking to fall, because it has been just to hot this summer to really do anything major outside. Me and heat do not get along,I'll take 45 to 70 any day.
But with fall it just seems that you know soon it will be winter and then comes a slowing down period,a time when you have only 12 things to do not 20.
I'm torn. We usually have mild summers here in the mtns of NC. But this year it has been hot and there has been very little rain. At the same time, autumn means that it's NOT long before the growing season is over and I am certainly not ready for this, at least not until my Bruggies bloom. They sure are slow......

You're right Louisa, as these next two season come on I should be slowing down, eh? Maybe that is why I'm looking forward to Fall! Yee-haww. Like many of ya'll I've gotten to where I don't care for a lot of heat anymore. (Normally I run my AC in the shoffice only sporadically during the summer; this year it's been on non-stop everyday since I came back from Tenn!)
Also, I've noticed when the seasons change I tend to get rejuvenated! As the weather cools I'll get more work done in a day than I will in a week if the weather is too hot. And my antenna seem to perk up and go into "Yee-hawww mode" as I note all the changes coming on!
One good thing about the colder weather of autumn and winter is that at least I can put on a sweater or jacket and work up a sweat. Whereas in the heat there just isn't any respite. When the new beds are eventually in place I can look forward to planting veggies, perennials and such in the fall. There is always something to do in the winter garden and brussels sprouts taste so much better after the first frost. Now my ideal temps would be 75 degrees during the day and about 50 at night. That way I wouldn't have to overwinter plants but I guess that's asking too much and wouldn't suit the plants I do grow, especially the roses. So, on second thoughts I'll take the norm!! :-)
:-) You must have been typing at the same time as me Shoe!! My a/c hasn't stopped running and the bills are so high. I long to open the windows again and feel the sweet breeze upon my face.
Come on Fall............yessiree, baby!! Too much of summer takes it's toll on a old body! With the arrival of day temps in the 60's it will be ideal for extending the Cannas bed all the way back and installing stepping stones, and final divisions of current plants. I, like Horseshoe can get so much more done under those conditions. I take each season as it comes, and thank God for each one of them.
Spring for renewal, Autumn to reap Spring and Summer's bounties, and Winter for reflection, and planning.

Fans. Get fans. We still don't have AC in the house (just in the shoffice) but we sure have our share of fans! The window fans pull in the nite air and makes for comfortable sleeping weather. (Course now, on those few weeks of August temps that only go down to the upper 70's at nite there is a bit of grumbling, but it passes.)
Jerrie you ae so right!! We are never content are we and we should be. It seems not too long ago (gosh where did the year go) that we were longing for the Spring. Fans - I have fans!!...lol!!
Not yet, I hate autumn. And the smell of fallen leaves. YUCKIE. We have had very bad drought and temps in about +27-30 C in shade for almost 2 weeks. So no autumn for a while yet ;) We could use some rain anyway. :}
Even though I haven't had any flower beds to take care of this summer, :-( , I am ready for the fall. The heat and humidity have been relentless this summer. I like the warm days and the crisp nights of the fall. The changing seasons always seem to bring me new hope and rejuvinate my spirit.

I used to truly dread fall - living in colder climates I suppose (the onset of another long, hard winter isn't much to look forward to, if you really prefer warm, sunny temps ;)
But living farther south and gardening more seriously has brought me to look at fall in a different light. As others have said, there's a lot to be thankful for with cooler temperatures. And falling leaves mean compost. When the growing season has been as "off" as this one, it's almost a relief to think of getting the garden put to bed (much like getting an unruly toddler to sleep after a particularly rambunctious day!) But not before I get a few good batches of 'maters and peppers (Lord willing) to make some salsa!
I'll take a nice long autumn, please, no frost until well into October, cool days, nights with lots of stars and the moon in season. The heat and humidity have played havoc on my poor body and my gardens - my pansies actually look bad this year. I'll perk up the same time they do and we can take a nice easy ride through the fall. I'm practising patience and learning the ways of compost and mulch, the easy ways of volunteer daisies and violas, hardy geraniums and lobelia, the beauty of an occasional plantain and golden rod and asters as the autumn's color.
Fall and Spring are my two favorite seasons. I am really looking forward to fall! Like everyone's said, this heat has been a real hum dinger this year, and I am looking forward to opening up the windows and having fresh air blowing in again. But I hope my nicotiana by the front window last a long time into fall since they're sheltered; they send in the most heavenly scent through that window at night. Ahhhhhhhhh
Oh my gosh!! I can't believe I've forgotten all about nicotiana. See what the heat does to you!!
66 degrees this morning, nice and pleasant, but it will not last. 90 by afternoon. I predict first frost for lower michigan by October 12th.
I cannot wait for fall to arrive! I don't go by the calendar, but when the daytime high's level out to the low to mid 70's. It usually happens in late September here, and I am already counting the days!
Longing for autumn (my favorite season). Hate the winter cold! The blooms always start looking so crisp and bright in the fall!
It's definitely an apple cider and hot chocolate day around here. It's 1:15 in the afternoon and the temperature still hasn't managed to get any higher than 58 degrees! It's gonna freeze, I just know it.
Hope not Joan, hope not!

The weather person was wrong again today, actually quite pleasant today. I think it got around 82, still about 10 degrees more then I want but there was a light wind and that helped.
autumn is my absolute favorite time of year...not hot anymore, beautiful trees, holidays around the corner, school is starting-all kiddos in school not causing trouble elsewhere :-) longer days....
i love winter too, my second favorite season but the overall feel of autumn, i just love. puts me in a great mood. :-) u can never wait for it, come beginning of september, fall decor is out and i am making more!
OK, now you're talking my kind of weather! Heck, we never get up past about 75 degrees F. all summer, and it dips down into the 50's at night. No need for fans or air conditioners around here!
I have to admit, I'm beginning to think about winter. Fall is still a pretty busy time around here, and it's just around the corner for me. By September, it's time to start buttoning things up, and I have hundreds and hundreds of potted plants to tuck in for the winter.
By October, hard freezes are a likelihood, and we work ourselves into a frenzy trying to get everything done. It's almost a relief when the first flurries of snow begin and the blanket of white covers all those unfinished chores!
I hope it doesn't freeze either "eyes", but I started bringing my potted brugs in at night. It's down right frigid out there!
NOT ME! NO WAY! NOT YET!!!
Notmartha,,come on join in and welcome autumn with open arms. LOL LOL it's going to get ya!!! Here it comes!!!!
4pm and 66 degrees. this is as close as you get to fall in Aug.
I better start moving rest of my hay,got to find my snow blade, put another coat of shellac on my dog sled ---- Great God Almighty there is so much to do.
