Synonyms

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm not having much luck trying to add synonyms into the PDB. It seems if a synonym has been listed once - the system won't let me list it again. There are some plants that have several cultivars of the same species. Also there are a few plants that are listed both under the current name and the synonym name - like Asarina scandens [syn.Maurandya antirrhiniflora] or visa versa. I'm not sure which one is the current and correct name now. Neither of them will let me list the other as a synonym because they both have their own entries.

Sue, I just added Maurandya scandens as the synonym to Asarina scandens, using the normal "add a synonym" function, without any trouble.

(Unless I'm missing something, it appears the genus has changed from Maurandya to Asarina, but I'm not seeing where the species scandens is synonymous with antirrhiniflora. If you have other information that states otherwise, please let me know.)

I do know what you mean about difficulty of adding synonyms to multiple cultivars - once one of them is entered in the PDB it's impossible to add the same synonym to the other cultivar entries via the "add a synonym" link.

Hopefully Dave will check out this thread, and see what can be done to fix it. In the meantime, if you come across any others and need help just holler :)

Euughh!!

Asarina, Maurandya, Maurandella and Lophospermum are so confused it's hard to say who is what, where, when and how. All the Genera are still valid and current, there has just been a rejigging.

Currently (and according to the RHS) Asarina has only one species left in the genus - Asarina procumbens (syn Antirrhinum asarina)

Asarina antirrhiniflora became Maurandya antirrhiniflora and is currently calling itself Maurandella antirrhiniflora (watch this space folks!).

As for Asarina scandens, I think it's current name is Lophospermum scandens with both Asarina and Marandya scandens as synonyms. However, us poor mortals can't seem to keep up with the rapid name changes and you're more than likely to find it listed as the latter two.

Just wanted to say ... sorry to confuse matters

Thanks baa - that's about as clear as mud - lol!! Asarina procumbens is the RED DRAGON one, right? Maybe I should move the pictures in the Asarina scandens entry??

Poppysue

Always happy to help *BG*

Asarina procumbens? Errr ... no not quite.

We have at least 3 possibilites

Asarina 'Red Dragon' (as a hybrid)

Maurandya 'Red Dragon' (as a hybrid)

Technically it is indeed Asarina 'Red Dragon'. However with a taxonomic spanner in the works it could just as well be:

Da da dahhhhhn

Lophospermum erubescens 'Red Dragon'

I'll plug away for an answer for a couple of days and report back with findings.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

It gets me all these names!! I traded for seed for both the Maurandya & Asarina. I had no idea they were the same plant - of course, until I grew them.

Hah!

That was silly of me, I got the answer from the current seed list of the man who developed the hybrid Ray Brown (Plant World in Devon) ... it's hybrid so no species name and we'd all be just as confused if we found the parents as to what their current names would be anyway *BG*

Lophospermum 'Red Dragon' (syn Asarina 'Red Dragon' syn Maurandya 'Red Dragon')

I know what you mean Poppysue, some seem to change names weekly!

I suppose this means making a new entry in the PDB :)

It's baaaaaacckkkkk! Sorry to dredge this thread from its grave but can anyone help me with [fill-in-the-generic-name-here] erubescens and is it perhaps the proper species for 'Mystic Rose' (and is that also the same as 'Mystic Pink'????) or am I dealing with a hybrid of sorts - or is it REALLY Asarina/Maurandya/something scandens as so many sources state? (The leaves don't look right to me.) Ugh.......

We can totally discount the Asarina.

Mystic Rose/Mystic Pink are most likely to be Maurandya although they may be Lophospermum. However, it may be that the cultivar names were erroneous to start with *G* and simply there as a seller.

This may take a little time!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm learning to be patient ;o) It seems we need to do some cleanup on the Asarinas - again. Sigh....

Tokyo, Japan

I humbly suggest you just call them all "Lophospermum"s...

I mean, anything with "lopho" in it's gotta be, like, totally kewl, y'know?

;)

So far I can't validate either cultivar name :(

Thank you sooo much for that Lophophora, we truely appreciate your input

(quick Terry get the trash can)

I'll pass it to you when I'm done with it ;o)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Amen, Brenda, do you know what it all means in English? lol

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Sorry, Laura I don't speak "Admin" fluently! LOL
