Lefties do it better!

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Today is Lefthanders Day throughout the world and possibly further. This is the day we (yes, I am lefthanded) unite and give thanks for not batting left, throwing and kicking left, and writing left. Now all we need is a lefthanded mouse for the computer. We have sissors and tools; now we want a mouse! Actually I saw one in a computer magazine once.http://www.guardian.co.uk/Print/0,3858,4481111,00.html

happy left handers day :)

Happy leftie day or where I come from cackhanded or caghanded day!

I use the mouse left handed. I just changed the buttons on my mouse via My Computer to accomodate the switch.

Meant to add ... Love the link!

But is there a day for those of us who are confused-handed?? I write forwards right-handed, backwards left-handed, I often don't know which hand I'm typing with - makes for some really interesting typos! I wash dishes left-handed, tie my shoes left-handed and weed ambidextrously. I don't automatically know my left from my right, and in a test to see if I was right or left brained, I came out smack down the middle.

Hmm, maybe I just gave out too much information there, or perhaps you'll all treat me gently like the slightly spooky cousin . . .

Anyway, happy goofy-footers day!

Boy Kathleen you sure have a lot going on between left and right. Will have to check on how I wash the dishes tonight. A good southpaw writes upside down. It only makes sense.

Golddog: Do you know that being left handed is hereditary. My Great-Grandfather was a lefty, My Mother was a lefty and I have one son that is a lefty. It usually skips a generation. I grew up with a left handed mother, so I wash dishes, iron clothes the way a left handed person would do, but I am right handed.

As 6th grade came to a close, the writing certificates were passed out. Yep, you guessed it, all received one but me. I had been started from 1st grade to write righthanded. By 4th grade they finally realized their grand experiment wasn't working. So put the pen in the left hand. It felt strange for a while. By writing upside down, I did OK but not too great. My excuse, my alibi today.

Kathleen,
You can be my "spooky cousin" anyday! :-)
I've always heard that left-handed people
are the only people
in their right minds (technically speaking)!
Just sign me,
A fellow leftie :-)

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

I was "trained" to be right handed in first grade, but the teacher finally gave up on me, I always hated how all the scissors were for right handed people in school, I loved to do all the little projects but mine never turned out as nice as the other kids until my parents figured it out and bought me a pair of leftie scissors. Oh the woes we have faced by being in our right minds!!!

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

I am a "leftie" too. It's so funny when people swear I am going to cut my hand with a knife only because it looks backwards to them! lol What really bothered me in school was that spiral notebooks catered to the "righties", but that has changed with the times. I am proud to be a member of this select group. :o)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh my...and I missed such a glorious holiday as that!? I'm a lefty, most of the time. I bat right-handed, shoot a bow and arrow right-handed, but yet I throw a ball/rock/whatever left-handed!
I write left-handed, but in the bathroom I swipe righ-handed (pretty picture there, eh?). I use scissors right-handed, but swing a machete left-handed.
I just don't know if I'm coming or going! Or is that going and coming? τΏ?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I'm right handed but my friend is left handed... I didnt't know anything about this left-hand day nor my friends.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

My son is left handed...

Versailles, CT(Zone 7a)

Debby is right about handedness being hereditary.

My mother throws a ball with her left hand and catches it with her right; I can only knit left-handed and had awful trouble holding needles and dropping stitches at school until it was realised; I am otherwise (more or less) right-handed; my son eats left-handed (can't cut with his right hand) but is otherwise right- handed.

Interestingly, I always had problems with right and left when we lived in the UK but since we came here (driving on the right) I am fine but my husband has suffered the reverse and now has trouble with right and left (he is totally right-handed).

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Speaking of which, isn't it about time for the UK to turn their autos around and drive on the right side of the street. I can't imagine all the English drivers in France driving on the right, and the French drivers in England driving on the left. If they were all lefthanded, they would at least drive properly. Left handed people make the best drivers. I read that somewhere.:)

My husband is left handed. When he was about 10 he broke his left collarbone and was in one of those casts that had the brace down to the hip. He had to learn to throw balls and rocks right handed. Now he does many things right handed but still eats and writes with his left. He can use a hammer or saw, pliers and other tools with right or left hand, a definite advantage over us one handed folks. He says he is equally inept with either hand.

Golddog

Driving on the left suits me fine, keeps my sword arm free to attack on coming traffic. Seriously, I don't want to lose every last bit of tradition Britian has just to suit the rest of Europe.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Baa don't take me too seriously on this one. My problem is not having the confidence to drive in England. One false move and that would be that. Never thought of driving on the left as tradition. You're right. Just as I never want to see the Royal family dissolve. Now that is tradition! We tourists never see the real England, riding on bus and train. A lease car is the answer to finding the various flower shows, dog shows, and such. Now how did this conversation turn to dog shows?

Golddog

Sorry I did have an LOL in there originally, I took it out meaning to replace with a smile .... mea culpa ;)

I was going to hire a car in the USA but decided against it ... mainly due to the fact I didn't think I could cope with driving on the right AND in snow *G* Taxi driver was a lot of fun though and even came into the store if he arrived early!

We must seem to drive like madmen here compared to your roads ;) But you're right you do need to hire a car to see anything here. Public transport is an unfunny joke at times ;)

Golddog

It's easy to switch from driving on the right to driving on the left. First, if you rent a car, the steering wheel is on the other side so all you have to do is make sure the driver is in the middle of the road and not the edge of the road. Also, you just follow the other traffic. My daughter was very nervous the first time she rented a car and drove in England but commented on how easy it was after the first 5 minutes (and those 5 minutes of panic were her nerves, not the difficulty!).

And I agree with Baa - it's amazing how you on-the-right, right-hand drivers have survived all these years without the use of your sword arm. :-)

Golddog- it is almost Lefthanders day again! My how time flys. (PS I am a lefty too!)

Can another ambi join in the fun? When's the party?

Used to give my teacher fits by doing long division with a pencil in each hand! I could never figure out what her problem was as I always got the right answer. My son is an ambi too, poor thing. When he was little, he could never figure out which hand to use. He finally decided to write with his right had but holds it curved around like a lefty would do. Needless to say, his handwriting stinks!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I too was left handed till first grade. I write right handed, do everything else left handed. A friend was teaching me to tie Christmas bows and asked at the start if I was left or right handed, and I said 'right' but I couldn't tie a bow, I tried to do it her way but my bow just wouldn't work. Then she saw the problem, she said "You're not naturally right handed are you?" and then she taught me to tie with the left hand, no problem from then on.
