Blackfoot Daisy

Dave,

Blackfoot Daisy - Melampodium leucanthum. The first picture in the PDB does not appear to be accurate. Can it be verified and/or deleted?

Thanks,
Carla

Because it involves a third party (another member) I'm going to leave this one to Vols. I'll E-mail her the URL to this thread and when she gets back home (she's out of town for, I believe, 4 more days) she'll take care of it.

thanks,
dave

It's taken care of. Debby had posted it in the M. leucanthum entry as well as M. paludosum (which appears to be a better match, based on my personal recollections of growing this species, plus other photos I found in the entry and elsewhere.)

I've deleted the photo on the M. leucanthum entry.

Thanks, Terry. Wasn't quite sure how to handle this. You fixed it, though, and we all appreciate it.

This does bring up a good "PDB etiquette" issue. I often get emails asking me to look into a particular plant's name, photo, or other information because someone suspects something is not quite right.

And I certainly don't mind doing the research - when I have the time. It involves old fashioned sleuthing online and through my reference books, then when I feel armed with enough information, I contact the contributor and ask them (tactfully) about whatever has been called into question.

And with one minor exception, I've never been treated rudely by the contributor (occasionally ignored, but that's okay.) 99.9% of the time, I get a willing and gracious reception. And I don't think my success rate is because I'm superbly skilled at diplomacy :) I think it's because people genuinely want to do it "right" and don't mind having things moved and tweaked a bit to ensure it is correct.

Which is the long way of saying this: if anyone sees something out of place and feels comfortable contacting the contributor directly, please go ahead!

Politeness counts, but there's no reason to be afraid of what might happen. I have seen some new cyber-friendships struck when members with similar tastes in plants get to talking about a particular species they're both obviously interested in - at least to the point of knowing a bit about it :)

I know that I posted a picture of a japanese maple the other day and someone posted that they thought it should have been a different color. I went by what the nursery tag identified it as, but that doesn't always mean that the nursery has it right. I guessed that perhaps it was because the tree was growing in full shade that maybe the color was different. Who knows?

If someone checks my photos out and notices something wrong, please let me know, too. I am still new at gardening and have/will make a bzillion mistakes between now and forever.
