A couple of you have asked for a description of my trip to Belize, so here's a taster.
I was there on a bat workshop, which i understand figured in a magazine's top ten of weirdest holidays for the year (not sure which number we reached though).
We saw loads of animals and birds and handled 29 species of bat from the largest in the Americas to the smallest (and found c10 more using bat detectors)
Other mammals were jaguarundi (one of the small big cats), tamandua (arboreal anteater), woolly opossum, deer, howler monkeys, spider monkeys (which bombed us with huge fruits, the little darlings), squirrels, coati mundi, agouti, paca (like an agouti only different), gray fox, and kinkajou. I saw 118 species of bird, and others were seen that i missed. Everything from impressive eagles and huge vultures down to jewel-like humming birds. We saw jacanas walking on lily pads and i saw a Gray Hawk dive on a snake and fly off with it.
Yes we did get rained on (only a couple of times - Belize has a mini dry patch in august) and no we weren't anywhere we could dry out. Our things were wet through even without the rain. But IT WAS WORTH IT!
My visit to Belize
Phil I'm glad you posted this because I couldn't understand your email to me :-) It sounds an incredible holiday and obviously one that you will never forget. Is that a moth??? If so, it's beautiful!!! You must post more pictures!!
I can say it's a brilliant place also. I've been there <5 times and should have gone more often instead of going to the the Med.
Sorry if my email was unintelligable louisa, i was probably still suffering from jetlag at the time. Just wanted to thank you for your birthday wishes and explain that i hadn't replied straight away as i flew into Belize on my birthday and had only just returned when i wrote to you.
That's a butterfly, i'll see what other photos i've got. Most are on slide film not digital and my scanner's not brilliant, but i hope some may be worth showing.
Yes, it was a shame you decided against this trip Mark, we saw sooo much. But there's always another time :)
Jetlagged!!! I'm not surprised. I almost said butterfly to the picture but am usually wrong, so went the other way....lol!! I can't win!!
:-) louisa
I've been posting a few in wildlife - and one in photos (which by now has probably sunk without trace)
phil I am sorry to say I've missed so much here in the last month. It happens once in a while, were other things take precedence and there was some ill health too but am slowly and surely catching up - I think!!! :-)
They're all still there in wildlife louisa. Sorry to hear you've been not too well. Hope you're really getting right now.
Philomel
What a fantastic workshop (almost makes me like bats *G*)!
Louisa I'm sorry to hear you have been unwell, I hope you are recovered now.
