Anyone planning to watch the meteor showers over the next few days??? I set the alarm each year...usually after midnight, but 2am till dawn is supposed to be best. Might even try for pictures this year if the dogs don't sneak outside with me. LOL
Perseid meteor showers
Is it that time of year again?! I'll be out there, camera in hand! Good luck on your picture hunting, Ginger. :)
I went out Sat. night about 12:30 and saw nothing, but last night at 2:00 I was able to see some..maybe 12-15 in a half hour. The Nov. showers last year were really great..whole bunches criss-crossing the sky. Didn't bother with the camera..perhaps I'll try this Nov.
All we had was clouds last night. Well, there was one little opening that let a few stars shine through, but most were still obscured by a thin vaporous cloud. Bummer. Gonna' try again tonight!
it is still dark in Calif. as i write this. i was out a few minutes ago, and saw several shooting stars and they were super bright too. awesome! from where i live, the shooting stars came down from the south western skies. here is url for more into ... http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/meteors/article_91_2.asp
Still clouds last night. :( I wouldn't be so bad if they would drop some rain!
We had some last night while banding (like ringing) bats.
The sky was really clear and the ones i saw, while standing with a net over a bat exit hole, were not exactly spectacular, but nice to see nevertheless. Would have needed an extra couple of hands to use a camera as well :)
Wingnut... i hardly saw any before midnight. the reason why i got up at 4 this a.m. skies were much clearer at dawn than midnight.
Philomel... impossible to take photo as they come like lightning strikes, never know when they will appear... unless u got the camera programed or something :)!
the few ones i saw were well worth getting up, they were big ones with long tail at the end, and very bright at the start, can't miss it at all.
hope somebody is as lucky as i am this morning :)!
Thanks, MaVie! Iill have to go to bed early and set the alarm to try again. Their peak is over now, right? But maybe I can see a few. If not, I'll just wait for the Leonids.
Yes, MVR - was just having a laugh about doing umpteen things at once, (but no broom in sight lol), and Wingnut mentioned cameras :)
well accdg to the url, the peak was the 12th, but i was able to see good ones earlier this morning. can never tell, what Mother Nature will do. all these years i've been watching meteor showers, so far the best time is at dawn, unless otherwise specified.
Click view on skychart on this url ... http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/skychart/# , to find out ur longtitude and latitude. that way u can pin point exactly where to look on ur area. HTH
Awesome site, MaVie! Thanks! I was looking in the wrong direction when I did try. Glad there were clouds ~ I would have felt really stupid otherwise. *Giggle-snort!*
NO intention whatsoever on ur intelligence. one thing i always do when i bump into a url, is... to explore the entire site. one never know what are the 'hidden' venues existing in those urls. this is my way of learning more.
once u have learned ur longtitude and latitude, use this site to mark the skies above u ... http://www.fourmilab.to/yoursky/ after u have entered ur location info, be sure to bookmark the skies right above ur head. that way when u get too curious where, what planet or star is being spoken for, u always have it available at hand.
i have mine bookmarked for ages. good always to know ur bearing on the sky chart.
if u have noticed Jianhua location is indicated by the longtitude and latitude since his snail address is too complicated. always good to know these info. aside from knowing the directions of north, south, east and west. hope u didn't mind me sharing this info with u. the world is vast, but we could narrow it down by sharing info. we never knew ever existed. that is my 2 cents worth for the day.
Oh, no! I didn't think you were saying anything about my smartness (or lack thereof ;). That was ME that was doin' that! LOL! I love you sharing these sites with us. Thank you!
And another awesome site! I've been playing with the other one, now gotta' go play with the new one. :)
have fun.LOL!!! that is exactly the same thing i did when i first discovered the site 4 yrs. ago.
it was more fun when i hear on the news certain stars of meteor are up there in the horizon. i didn't have to play the guessing the game. Enjoy!!!!
:P!!!!!!!!!!
i saw quite a few last night, inbetween clouds! very spectacular here in durham as it's pretty dark with not too many streetlights where i live. i saw quite a few with no tails - just looked like stars, but moving. i saw about 4 with the tails, blink and you miss em tho!
You're lucky, i think the ones i saw were less spectacular than they might have been because, although i was out 'in the middle of nowhere', in Kent you're never far from a town (in this case on a hill overlooking the City of Canterbury) and all the lights.
You can never get away from the hum of traffic either :(
Perhaps don't have so many clouds though :)
there were only a few and sporadic, not as bright and spectacular like yesterday. they are there alright. wish i could have seen more though.
I saw one!! I saw one!! It was moving real slow all the way across the sky and had a red light on it that blinked! You couldn't miss it! I'm so glad I finally got to see one! *giggle*
glad to know u've seen one. now u will be enthuse to see other meteors. if u go back to the first url, it states this coming Sat. there will be an asteroid that will fly by the earth. click on observing highlights to get the details.
