I just went to your page to see if there were more pics of the get-together you all had and saw that gorgeous purple thing on your member page http://davesgarden.com/photo.php?member=windsurffer . What is that?!?! I have to put it on the top of my wish list, too! *Grin!*

Simply Beautiful Evert!! Thanks for the links!!!
Now that I think about it, I remember something about Wind "wanting" these. I hope she finally got them, b/c they are breath taking!!! The price tags on them are high!! Little tooooo far outta my pocket book!! LOL
OMG!! Those are awesome!!! Yes, definitely on my want list!
Evert, thanks for the hyperlink on Japanese Hepaticas. The colors take my breath away. I have Fraser's Thimble Farms 2002 catalog, but nowhere can I find what zone they are able to grow in. I am zone 5. My daughter is coming out from Virginia the end of this month and we are going to Salt Spring for a couple of days. We plan to go there, rutholive (Donna)
Baa your not far off but it is a Japanese Hepaticas(murasaki-shikibu) and cost $260. There are a lot more that I have put on my wish list. The one I really would like to have is the Mangekyou and cost $1,430 see which ones you would like to have. http://www.thimblefarms.com/11apren.html
LOL I think I'll stick to the Heps I have in the garden and enjoy the pics on the net *G*. Thanks for the link Windsuffer and Evert
:)
I enjoy our Hepaticas every spring, albeit they aren't as cool looking as the Japanese varieties.. at least they're blue :D
Mind-boggling to think of anyone spending that kind of money on a plant that will probably die quickly (at least in my hands, er, soil :)
Maybe when they are more commonly available in US the prices will come down to something somewhat reasonable, then I would love to try them.
Baa I know what you mean that's why it's on my wish list.
Kathy, I said the same thing. I was going through the list picking out which ones I wanted to buy. When I saw the prices I thought that I was seeing backwards and almost fell off my seat in shock. Now if I win the lottery then I will buy them all and put them in my new green house lol.
Baa, things like these are usually available faster and cheaper in UK than US: do you have any there local to admire?
Lupine
That's a very good question but the answer is somewhat ambiguous ;)
It generally takes about 2-3 years for a plant released in Europe to reach the USA and vice-versa. However, when another country produces a cultivar it seems to hit both our shores at pretty much the same time. As for price, they do tend to be cheaper here but why that should be I don't know. I've looked through some US nursery price lists and have to pick myself up off the floor the prices some charge! I may have just picked the wrong lists to look at as there are many expensive nurseries here too.
I've not seen of the doubles any in the flesh so far. I'm not keen on buying a plant I haven't seen growing in someones garden, too many pitfalls that way!
Here is a link to a UK site which sells these wonderful Heps
http://rareplants.co.uk/hepatica/japan.htm
Paul Christian sells non flowering divisions of the these fancy ones for about 11 quid each.
Oh, man! I showed Kenny the pics at the links above and he said, "Well, honey, why don't you get you one?" I told him the prices and he almost choked! Then he said, "Well, that pretty pink one you like is only $125 ~ why don't you get that one?" I almost choked! (No, I'm not getting any of them. ;) I'd rather spend that on a yardful of plants than on one. LOLOL!
lol wingnut...I would choke too...., but it was a nice thought wasnt it?
:-) I've enjoyed this discussion! Thanks. Too many things on my 'want' list that are far cheaper... maybe not quite as spectacular, but definitely cheaper, LOL!
Yeah, it was and a bit of a scarey one. He's a sweetheart of a guy and doesn't pinch the pennies enough that I never get to buy plants (I'm the one that does that LOL!), but we're usually talking fifty bucks at the most. A hundred and twenty five?! I figured he wants something and today my suspicions were confirmed ~ his nephew told him about two horses for sale and he's gone to look at them right now! LOLOLOLOL!
lol wingnut - I get the same treatment at home with my DH
Wingnut... do I see a new horse carrying a pink Japanese Hepaticas in your future? LOL!
ROTFLOL, Darius! Purple ones and pink ones and white ones and white and green ones and purple and pink ones, growing all over the place and in such abundance that there are enough blooms to braid into their manes AND tails! LOLOLOL!
better than a new horse eating your hepaticas......
:P!!!
Wingnut, when you get them, don't forget your friends :D Most of these are so gorgeous I would have a very hard time picking just 1 or even just 10! I want almost all of them!
Mark, since they are just 11 quid (about US $25?) there, how about it? Going to give in to temptation? I don't know how long they take to flower from non-flowering divisions, but can't be more than a year or two. If they were offered here at that price, I would certainly splurge on one or two. But I have a very hard time resisting temptation :)
11 £ = 17,17 US$ (17,52 €) :)
Oh, man, if I got these you can BET I'd figure out how to propagate it! I'd HAVE to share, you know! And the temptation to clean you all out of starts of interesting and hard-to-find plants would be too much. ;) But I just can't justify spending that much on a plant, no matter how gorgeous it is. I'm the voice of reason in this relationship, I'll tell ya'. ;)
No horses yet ~ when he got to the man's house, he found that the man had neglected to tell him they were in Pontotoc, a hundred or so miles from here, and Kenny didn't have enough time today ~ maybe Friday? They sound like they're worth twice the price that the lady's asking. I'd be concerned about that if there wasn't such a drought right now.
