It happened again

A couple of days ago, a man in Ohio fumbled to answer his cell phone while he was driving, didn't see the train tracks or the car full of teenagers stopped there, and 2 of the teenagers, twin girls, are now dead; the others are in serious condition. He wasn't drunk, or on drugs, just trying to answer his ringing phone.

The next time you are driving and your cell phone rings, ask yourself, Is this phone call more important than the lives of 4 people? Do I really want to spend the rest of my life knowing I caused that accident just for a stupid phone call?

Too often I have been almost hit by people distracted by other things when they should be driving. Please, please, for the sake of someone's sons and daughters, please don't answer your phone when you are driving.

I think it should be illegal to talk on the phone while driving. I know it is in some states. One can't give full attention to the road and traffic. And if you travel the freeways and interstates and they are as busy as I75, with heavy truck traffic, things can happen really fast.

The rule should be :

Step into a car, turn off your cel. phone.

Or just wait to answer it until you can stop the car and pay attention. They do have automatic answering.

Ok, well, let's rule out eating in the car, too. Oh, and swatting your children while you're driving. It's tough to swing at them from the front seat anyway. Shall we also rule out CD's and radios, too? I'm as guilty as anyone of getting into the music. How many people have listened to an interesting talk show program and become so engrossed that they arrived at their destination and couldn't remember how they got there? Does anyone pray while they drive? I do. I suppose I should stop that too. I might get distracted. The worst for me, though, is watching the scenery when I am driving somewhere...especially Tennessee. I spend waaay too much time looking at all those lovely mountains instead of the pavement ahead of me.

My point here is that anything can be dangerous in a car if done irresponsibly.

You'll save more lives if you take care of the drunks and druggies first, by the way. (stepping off soap box, now)

A car that is going fast then slow, off the road then on, seems to be either a drunk driver or a cell phone user. This is my observation. Have you felt road rage for the car in front of you, only to find they are on the phone? I think these drivers are very selfish, with no concern for other's safety. If they have no concern for me, then I have no concern for them. Let's make these phones inoperable while the car motor is running.

I followed an ol man in a truck eating french fries this week and just as annoying as any cell phone user can be and just as dangerous

How in the world could you be a big maucho guy or the most popular hussy if you didn't have that **** phone sticking out of your ear! Just got one a few days ago and still wondering why. Thought we needed it for our business?

Points taken: we all do distracting things when we drive. The thing is, we all are guilty, and I have really tried to notice what I am doing, and cut out or at least way down on distractions.

Our state has no law against using a cell phone while driving for the same reasons as Smilin pointed out: you can't legislate common sense. People are going to do other things instead of drive sensibly, but many people just don't think about it: oh, I can shave, I can put on my makeup, I am running late anyway, no time to stop and eat, just do it all during my "down time" of driving.

Did you ever see the commercial showing a man, while driving to work, using his computer, taking notes, talking on his phone, reading his electronic newspaper? The advertiser just skipped all the people he ran into while he was busy looking at all his toys rather than the road. (This commercial was only on for a couple weeks before a lot of people complained: can't remember the sponsor.)

Time for me to get off my soapbox too: please, just all be careful out there.

Sorry if I offended, I really didn't mean any offense to anyone, it's just that most people I have met just aren't thinking.

LL, I agree with you one hundred percent. I was coming out of Burger King one day and this lady ran a red light and hit a man(thank God no one was hurt) she told police that the man ran the red light. I came up after and told the man that I would tell the police that I had seen what she did and waited for them to get there I guess she didn't see us either. This is so foolish to possible kill someone over a phone call. Don't say it can't happen to you or me because it can at any give time. Bobbie
