Terrestrial orchids, any of them!

Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
We all know Baa doesn't like Roses or Brugs but I suppose they are shrubs ... Daylilies because while a single flower is pretty, taken as a whole plant and garden view I just don't like them.

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

hey Baa wanna borrow my glasses?

ROTFL Mark

OK Baa should learn to put on her specs first ;) Sorry *Sheepish Grin*

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

*grumble, grumble* editing post so I don't say my first perennial was a shrub rose! LOL - Happy Mark?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What was the first perennial you ever bought?
Coreopsis 'early sunrise'. Divided 'em and divided 'em. Great plant.
What would be your desert island plant? and why?
It'd have to be drought-tolerant, LOL. I am just crazy about the scent of nicotiana, though it wouldn't serve much of a practical purpose.
Which perennial would you like to grow but can't.
So much requiring full-sun. I have a bunch of nearly horizontal plants out front because they must stretch to reach the sunlight. The few places we have what could be construed as full-sun are fairly full already!
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
More hostas -- big ones with blue or variegated leaves!
Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
Right now, it's peppermint. It's too doggoned aggressive. Actually, it's not the mint's fault, it's mine for putting it in good soil with no boundaries for its roots.
Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)
Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)
What was the first perennial you ever bought? Tarragon
What would be your desert island plant? and why?
Parsley because it is nutritious and delicious and stops bad breath! (I figure without a toothbrush...)
Which perennial would you like to grow but can't.
Crysanthemums
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
Gaura
Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
Money Plant because it takes over!
Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)
What was the first perennial you ever bought?
I can't remember that many years ago since I have been gardening since I was a child enrolled in 4-H Gardening program.
What would be your desert island plant? and why?
Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) because it is so very nutritious, every part of the plant is edible. That is if I was stranded on that desert island. If not stranded I would like to grow orchids because they are so varied and beautiful.
Which perennial would you like to grow but can't.
I would love to have rhodendrons and azaleas but they don't do well here in alkali soil in the high desert of Idaho
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
a fern leaf peony. I must get one in memory of a grand old lady I was friends with since she told me she would give me a start as soon as I got my new house. She died before we got our house so I must get a red fernleaf in her honor. The second on my list is a bronze beach tree (Fagus sylvatica), in memory of my Dear Aunt. The third on my list is a red leaf redbud (cercis canadensis), tree. Just because I want one. grin
Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
That would probably be the ribbon grass(phalaris arundinacea), or the bishops weed (Aegopdium podograria Varigatum), that I planted at my Mothers house. It is my least favorite because it is so invasive. I sure wish I had planted it in pots or somewhere where it would be no problem to spread like it does.
Ehh... Maybe hemp (Cannabis) or kudzu (Pueraria lobata)? =)
Which perennial would you like to grow but cant.
All kind of tropical plants...
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
Black Scabiosa or Chocolate Cosmos (C. atrosanguinea)
Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
Maybe Bergenia, as it is such a 70's flat roof house garden plant and not very pretty.
people you are gonna have to let us know what the latin name is for some of your plants. I know some of you are gonna hate this but some of your common names just dont tell us what the plant actually is. red bud? money plant? ....
and please keep to the questions or there will be detention!!
Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)
I'm too old to remember!!!!
"eyes"
Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)
What was the first perennial you ever bought?
Oregano. The first garden was an herb garden.
What would be your desert island plant be, and why?
If I was alone on a desert island, I wouldn't try to survive on parsley. It isn't very filling. I must go with ponditus and choose amaranthus. I could have my cereal and my greens too!
Which perennial would you grow and can't? Meconopsis. Himalayan Blue Poppy! What a gorgeous creature! It likes cool summers, and we ain't got none!
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
Romney coulteri - Matilija poppy
Long bloom time, drought tolerant, lovely white flowers. I hope that the deer don't like to eat them as I intend to put one in the front which has no fence.
What is your least favorite perennial and why?
Dogbane! Apocynum cannabinum. The weeds are actually rather attractive, until you try to kill it. The roots go to the center of the earth, so you can never detroy it! They are all over the property. In my flower beds I have dug them up and have NEVER seen the ends of their roots. In certain areas I have applied Roundup (glyphosate), but to no avail. They are right back up . Maybe some of them die and new ones emerge, I don't know. The foliage was killed, but they must have sent a message to all the dormant seeds to sprout the next season. See this. There is still more root which has not been removed... http://www.css.msu.edu/css402/hempdogbane/hempdogbane.htm
Yes, I want a dark-leaved redbud (Cercis canadesis 'Forest Pansy') too, but that is a tree, isn't it? And beech trees...HMMM aren't Azaleas and Rhodies shrubs??
Versailles, CT(Zone 7a)
What was the first perennial you ever bought?
A red peony (paeonia) - but don't know which one
What would my desert island plant be and why?
A runner bean (phaseolus coccineus) because they grow easily, are perennials in a warm climate, I would have fresh green beans in the summer and could dry the beans for the winter. They also have very pretty flowers to cheer me up. So flowers and food all in one.
Which perennial would you like to grow and can't?
Marvel of Peru (mirabilis jalapa) - it wouldn't survive the winter here.
What perennial is on the top of my must get list?
Sea Holly (eryngium alpinum or E. x olverianum). I love the spiky blue flowers and they also dry superbly
What is my least favourite perennial and why?
Monarda didyma "Croftway pink" - such an insipid pink instead of the original scarlet. M. Cambridge Scarlet is much more desirable
Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)
Ok Mark, you made your point to me. I edited my part to read the names that I have been able to find thus far. Thanks for the reminder that common names are not the way to identify plants. Now if it only gets me some of these plants from some members, I will be very happy! LOL And Evelyn_in the garden, I decided that since trees and shrubs come back every year that they could be included in this especially since those are what I want most at the present. Lani
First perennial: - Shrub rose - sorry don't know the latin name
Desert Island: - anything in the hollyhock, hibiscus, malva, lavatera, sidalcea family. I love all those flowers
Can't grow: - Several....I don't have a very green thumb
Top of the List: - Astrantia Major - Masterwort
Least favorite - I love them all
So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)
What was the first perennial you ever bought?
French Tarragon... Artemisia dracunculus
What would be your desert island plant? and why?
Orchid, if I wasn't stranded and starving. They are just so pretty. If I was starving, I'd vote for any food plant, LOL.
Which perennial would you like to grow but can't.
Night Blooming Jasmine... Cestrum nocturnum. Too cold here, but it would remind me of my beloved grandfather and his tropical yard.
What perennial is at the top of your must get list?
Delphiniums... tall, gorgeous Delphinium elatum, any color... not the small almost insipid yellow ones that do survive for me.
Which is your least favourite perennial and why?
Sweet Violets... Viola odorata.. Actually I love them but in small, non-spreading quantities! I dig up scads of them all the time where they seed into my flower beds.
Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)
I don't know all the latin names of my plants yet, sorry. I do know the common names of most of them, but I'm a new gardener and still trying to learn the foreign language that goes along with it.
Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)
Darn, I don't know how to cut and paste.
The first perennials I ever bought were Gladiola bulbs. I still love all kinds of bulbs, especially irises and lilys.
My desert island plant would be mangoes.
The plant I would like to grow but haven't been able to so far are hardy geraniums. I don't know what the problem is..
My priority for now is re-blooming irises. I hope to have enough varieties to eventually sell them one day. A legacy I hope to leave to my daughter and granddaughter
I hope to cut some cuttings of trumpet vine from the home of a friend who passed away. It may be the one I have a love/hate relationship with; we'll see. At least I know to plant it a long ways from anything else.
Gardenwife, we have the same problem. I have very little sunny spots and they are so crowded with plants, it's unbelievable.
JoanJ... I 'cheated' on the latin names because I don't know them either. I opened another page in my browser, went to our PDB and looked up each one as I was filling out the questionaire! Actually, I have been doing that quite often with the list I keep of new plants I get, listing the botanical, as well as the common, name. Maybe one day more of it will sink into this small hard drive I call a brain, LOL. Besides, it's good exercise for my brain.
Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)
Darius, I worked for some time for seior citizens at a mealsite program here in Brevard. The ones that read, used computers and got out and stayed active kept their brains in good shape. The others that just sat around and did nothing but watch t.v. occaisionally, all seemed to have some stage of senility or Alzheimer's. The brain does need indeed need exercise
Versailles, CT(Zone 7a)
Woodspirit is right.
My mother, at 80, reads two carrier bags of library books a fortnight (loves detective stories!), watches tv, yes, but then likes to have a lively discussion about the news/politics, etc., her favourite programmes being, apart from detective stories, current affairs and documentaries.
She worked, albeit very part time at the end, until she was 70, having learnt to use a word processor at the age of 65 - she is a firm believer in keeping your brain active. As she says - use it or lose it!
So, it's doing you all good reading our different dialects although, I have to admit, I didn't understand all of Wintermoor's last missive!
In other words - Eh lad, cannt tha speak proper like what we duzz in Yorkshire?!!!!
