Great Surprise!!

I knew this brug was about to bloom, but I wasn't expecting to see this color. The first seedling from the Isabella X Butterfly group bloomed with white blooms, so I wasn't very excited about this one, but over night it happened and had the color immediately. This is one of Eric's seeds and I'm so glad to see the color on it. Hope it will darken with a day's time like most do, but will be happy if it stays just like this. Can't wait for it to totally open so I can see the inside of the bloom. Thanks Eric, I think this one is going to be a keeper.

Now i know why you weren't around earlier, you were out lounging, admiring your beauties..... very pretty, you HAVE to get a pic late this evening when it opens. very good color on it. you know what they say, you can get all kinds of stuff out of the same seed pod. beautiful leaves too. do i see a little sucker up front ready to be cut out?lol
i have a DrS X BF that should be open today or tomorrow.

Miss Brugie . . . that is a beauty and I know it will be even prettier this evening. I am so happy you got color this time. Yes indeed, it is a very pretty keeper!!

I don't know if I'll be able to get a better picture today. It is nasty outside, but I won't complain since we need the rain and the cool temps are really welcome. Will keep checking though and know that by tomorrow it will change for sure.

Arlene, you know what......that little sucker already has a name on it and I'm pretty sure it says "Arlene".

By the way, this is a very upright plant and is nearing six foot now. The other one that bloomed white was only about 4 ft or so. Still have a couple of other crosses yet to bloom that came from Eric's seeds. Now that I've got color in one, I'm anxious to see the others bloom. One is a small seedling that he pulled up and stuck in the box he sent me last fall. Will be interesting to see what it is.

Ms Brugie, there is nothing like seeing a good seedlings first bloom, is there? it sure is pretty, early morning pic will do! lol..... i'm proud for you.

It is a good thing we all aren't close by or you would swear there were varmints cutting you brugs down. LOL Two legged varieties. Another lovely brug.

Real pretty, Shirley. Be sure to post a pic when it opens all the way. Does it have a strong aroma?

Ms Brugie, just snapped a couple of pics of DrS X BF...small, twisted tendrils, nice yellow, don't know what color it will be tomorrow. i finished ripping open WP X Big, could not find sex organs!!!!!!!!!!! think i'll send this one back.

Everyone------my server is having problems tonight. Most of the mail that I'm sending out is coming back. Just got one back that I sent to Cala this morning. Well, it is not much more open this morning and the color has faded quite a bit. However, the fragrance is like "White Shoulders" perfume. I'll get a picture sometime today if it will open more. It is a lot cooler here now, so maybe the blooms will last a while.

Oh Shirley!! White Shoulders . . one of my favorite perfumes. How wonderful to have that scent in a brug - who cares what color or what the bloom looks like. Umm, can smell it now.

Don't feel bad, you might get the color back even stronger in a few more bloom cycles, but of course it might lighten up even further as well. Thats the nature of the first bloom cycle. I have even had hybrids that opened up white on the first cycle come back as a light orange on the second or third cycle. Its easy to get over excited on the first bloom, but at the very least you can say its a first year bloomer. If your breeding for vigor and earliness of bloom thats still something. So many suaveolens type hybrids are white as well. Wishing you luck with future blooms.

Just one other thought...is the pollen any good on that one? Perhaps you could use the pollen to cross to Rothkirch or some other such hybrid? Just an idea. I'd like that one to hybridize with if nothing else. I was trying to get an aurea x suaveolens x aurea looking type hybrid that was a very strong early blooming dark pink. It may be something to work with towards that aim even though technically it has some versicolor in it.

Ms Brugie, Ora Belle did that....the first few flowers went yellow to white, then they started going from yellow to white to what i guess would be called a honey color, second day. that's one good thing about the smaller flowers, they don't look wilted in the middle of the day.

The bloom doesn't seem to want to open up. It is a little more open today than when I took this picture, but the bell doesn't seem to want to flare open like other brugs blooms do. I haven't posted another picture because of this. I'll check the pollen from it and see what it looks like. Might have been too hot for it to be any good.

what patience you have, i would have been opening it up and looking at the inside!

Okay, I just have to do this even though it isn't about brugs. Have plenty of those. Wanted you all to know that Kyle brought me a bunch of hibiscus, not cuttings, but nice plants. One is huge and has yellow and double red plants in it together. Can't tell you the names because my memory is way to short. He also brought a couple of other tropicals. I tell you, this guy is the greatest and I "Thank" him so much for sharing with me. Now, I have to get to work finding something special for him. Any ideas?

If the above hybrid has viable pollen. I would say its valuable if for nothing else, but for its genes. Really no need to keep an infertile brug that doesn't open, but if its fertile then its at least valuable as a pollen donor or possibly a seed setter. Just an idea, he might not be interested in that particular hybrid at all or those type of genes.

Eric, I checked it for pollen and there is not very much on the anthers. They look rather dark and feel hard as well. There is some pollen, but I'll wait and see what the next bloom looks like. Right now it very much resembles a Frosty Pink with the green veining. Sure smells good though. The next bud should open within a week, so will see what the pollen looks like on it.

It may be too hot for the pollen to form properly or the hybrid just may not produce very good pollen. If it resembles a suaveolens type hybrid too much I would definitly want to cross it to either an aurea of some type or a versicolor multihybrid of some sort...ie Amber Rose, Rosabelle, Rothkirch, etc.

Boy Eric, I sure with I had one of the Rothkirch brugs, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. How about a L'Amour cross? It might be a while before I have blooms of that one, but couldn't I cross it back to Butterfly?

Think I said that wrong, but you know what I mean. Use Butterfly pollen on the Isabella X Butterfly.

Eric . . Are you saying that those that do not open completely now will probably not open completely when the weather cools a little. I have some that do not open like the one in the picture and I was just assuming it was the heat. Or do you think not having heat tolerance is a reason to cull? I heat tolerance one of your priorities in hybridizing for the ideal brug?
