One thing I find a teenie weenie bit annoying when adding to the daylily database..... every hemerocallis entry in every journal comes up. There are tons of them and it makes the pages a mile long. It would be one thing if it was the paticular variety that comes up but it's not... it's all daylilies in all the journals.
Daylily database
Yes, that annoys me to. It happens with all the stuff - hostas, brugs, you-name-it.
The problem is that I can only match on genus/species. Cultivar names aren't in the journals (there's no entry for them, so they'd have to go in the common name field or somewhere else.
In short, to have the linking between journals->pdb, I can't think of a better way to do it.
Maybe if the list is bigger than, say, 20 varieties, instead of listing them all out, we can have a link that says something like:
"The botanical name of this plant was found in 56 journal entries"
and then that would be clickable to a full list of all the findings on that plant in the journals.
Whaddya think?
Dave
Sue, someone else commented on this as well, as they found it detracted from the otherwise effective layout of the PDB.
And I promised to take it up with Dave, which I promptly forgot to do, so I'm glad you mentioned it. I recommend that:
a) in the short term, link to each member's name only once per entry. There aren't that many unique IDs for any given entry, but there sure are a lot of us that have multiple entries (usually because we have multiple cultivar/varieties). That would clean it up a lot. And...
b) Longer term, we probably need to do some tweaking of the member journals to include cultivar names (and better integrate them into existing entries in the PDB.)
What ever you guys decide is fine with me. I think most members list them in their journals but few actually have anything there - other than the name.
Vols, you and I posted about the same time. Scroll up and see my "option C". What do you think about that?
dave
Dave, I must have been still composing while you were hitting "enter" :) I think that's workable, at least until we get a chance to sort out the feasibility of adding cultivars to the journals.
