Tomatoes: Need acidic tomato...

Madison, AL

I have never heard of Sour Boy - this is a tomato?

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Nothing tastes as good as the tomatoes that my dad grew when I was a kid. I don't know if it was the location or the variety or a change in my taste buds, but tomatoes don't taste as good anymore. He grow "Big Boy", which I never see in the nursery nowdays.

Wow! This thread dates back to 2001! Have mercy!

Nope, never found seeds of Sour Boy but have become happy with other varieties that offer the flavor I was looking for.

Can you name some of your favorites? I have an addiction to try something new each year, and I'm already thinking of next year

BCH, someone recently asked me what was my favorite tomato and I froze. I honestly don't think I have a "favorite", most likely because I'm always growing/trialing so many different kinds.

However, to get you going on a couple of nice red ones with a nice rich flavor I'd suggest Abe Lincoln as one of them. Although I've heard a couple people consider others much better I seem to have a particular Abe stock that has gotten some good attention. I can share a few seeds with you next year if you like. There is a nice pic here with some more info:

Another favorite is Supersonic, a hybrid, and one of the few hybrids I grow. Excellent flavor and growth habit. Harris Seeds will be your source for them.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a mighty fine lunch to me, Ernie!
A sliced tomato and a few slices of Candy onions on that plate would've really done ya justice, eh? :>)

Thanks for your response, and I think I will take you up on the seeds. I have a red heirloom onion I've been growing, and saving the seeds for so long I can't even remember the name. They taste like candy to me and keep for months. How about a trade?

I'll Dmail you.
Thanks!

I just happened upon this old thread.

I am trying an interesting heirloom this year, reisetomate. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/112990/

It is from Central America and is said if you like the taste of raw lemons, you'll like this. I have a child who will suck on lemons or drink lemon juice straight, but yet despises tomatoes. So I bought this variety for him.
