Bananas: I got bananas!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

This is a bloom and baby nanners on my banana tree. It's sort of grown to the jungle house, I tried to untangle the leaves, but ended up breaking them, so I left it where it's at. I had to stand on the ladder to take this photo, the tree is way taller than I am.

The petals are pink with yours whereas mine has deep purple. When all the fruits have formed, we have to cut off the unopened flower to promote good growth of the fruits. This flower is used in cooking by some. The banana stem is also cooked (the center part). It is good for the intestines.

Dinu, I didn't know about cutting the bloom spike. I wondered why mine never developed last year!! I remember mom saying that lots of folks in Texas(where we lived when I was little) would cook bananas.

CC, the bloom is over a foot long now and still growing. It's very nice especially just before it opens.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

WOW! do you need two to get nanas?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, I only have one blooming right now, so I guess not. I have a dozen little bananas in the cluster so far. How many do I let it have?
BTW, this is in the Jungle House and reaches to the ceiling. It would push further if it could. It's got to be 110* in there during the day and it seems to love it. I broke a few leaves trying to get them out from around the frame of the green house, but didn't seem to hurt anything.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I put all 3 of mine in the ground, they didn't take it well.the wind and stuff did a number on them. But they are recovering, one seems to be sending up a pup,I'd love to see them bloom,I'd like nanas too ,but I'd be happy with a bloom like that! Are the ones on yours edible?I've heard some of the fruit is ornamental only....

Cala, where the blooms are emiting from, we call in the Phils. banana's heart. the fruits will keep on forming. u will know when it stop bearing fruit, when the last fruits are darker in color, almost black... drying up and not growing. cut off the heart, then the rest of the fruit will grow bigger for u, like when u blow air in a balloon. soon as the fruit reaches maturity, they will start turning yellow. ones several hands of banana show signs of yellowing, u can cut off the main fruit trunk off the tree. then u will see a lot of banana rhyzome coming up along the rootline. the biggest seedling from the rhyzome will be ur next banana bearing tree. the other rhyzome, u can start into new plants.

too bad we do not live in the tropical area, or we would continiously be having fruit every 9 months. in the tropics, several banana tree grow alternately, therefore getting continious supply of banana fruit. when one tree's fruit matures, the next tree is at a stage of bearing fruit. each banana we call a finger. where all the banana fingers get together we call the banana hand. sometimes it is difficult to be bilingual. i am trying to translate from the Phil. dialect into English. the difficult part is to remember the terminology locally used and tranlate into English. :).

once the semi ripe banana's are cut off. the main tree trunk is also cut off to the ground. they are useless anyway, they will only bear fruit ones. the new growths will be ur hope for the next fruiting season.

the banana leaves are place over fire lightly to make pliable so it does not tear. cut the leaves off the center core. the leaves are used to wrap meat, fish or seafood for broiling. using banana leaves for broiling prevent the meat from falling apart, same with the seafood. using the b. leaves to cook with give nice flavor to the dish too sometimes the banana leaves, we use in making rice cakes.

Thanks MaVie. I understand what you're saying.
CC, I put my smaller banana trees outside and we had a storm. They looked terrible for a few weeks, but now they are huge and beautiful.
