Cool Photo Feature Dave

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I just went to the photo forum and you have done an amazing job. No more clicking on individual shots. You are a genius!!!

I thought I was imagining. What exactly did he do? (No, please don't share code with me, just explain the workings vs the old way, please.)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I LOVE it!! Outstanding!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

When I go to the forum, all the pics are listed rather than just the titles of the pics. So you can just scroll down and look at each picture without clicking on the title and seeing the thumbnail. Now the entire page is full of the thumbnails and the pic title and who posted!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh DAVE!!!! this is the best! I'm so tickled.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I tell ya that Dave knows what he is doing. This is just excellent although the guessing was fun too LOL!

Saves me from thinking someone means a four legged thing when Wingnut shows us the Bobcat.

Indeed. It's very cool. I have limited this feature, however, to the Photos and PDB Pictures forums. All the other forums are as before.

Excellent , dave... I just noticed it, and I'm impressed.

very creative of you to apply this feature to the forums...,

Dave: this new feature is great! I've alread visited several threads in Photos because I was attracted by the photos. It just keeps getting better! Thanks, Dave.

Caught me off guard here...lol I didn't know what was going on when I saw that...nice surprise though :)

Only thing I'd like to see to make this even better is a link on the thumbnail itself to the thread. You have a natural tendency to click the photo, but of course nothing happens and you must click the text for the link.

I knew something was different. Atta boy Mr. Dave. (patting you on the back) "T" :)

Good idea, Jon. I've made the images a hyperlink so you can click on them to get to the thread.

Great move Dave! And the views are back too!!!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

That is so much easier and very convenient. Great Idea!

I'm too stunned for words with this magnificient modification! That's why they say "there's always scope for improvement". It's endless, really.

That's really true, Dinu. What DG is right now is like a regular human brain - it's powerful but is 5% as great as it could be.

Bringing everything together (as I did with the PDB->DG integration in the PDB Picture forum, e.g.) is, in my opinion, the next great challenge. If and when that ever happens, it will be an awe-inspiring event.

(It's also something I've been wanting to do for 2 years now...)

You never cease to AMAZE me!!!!! That is sooooooo cool!!!

Nice feature =)

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

Very nice Dave - thanks for all of your hard work!!! ;)

kmom: I create the thumbnail myself.

Here's how it happens. When a member goes to make a post, and includes an image, the system examines the image.

If it is > 1000 pixels wide, it automatically resizes it down.

Then it decides on a new file name, with the unix_timestamp, username, and some random garbage. So the filename will look something like:

dave_1000053321_231.jpg

Then it generates a thumbnail of the image, 100 pixels wide, and calls it "dave_100012312_231_tn.jpg".

Both are stored on the filesystem and the database knows which filename is attached to which thread (a database table called forum_images).

I'm using the ImageMagick package in conjunction with PHP to make this "magic" occur. :-)

That is just such a huge improvement, Dave, in something that seemed pretty perfect already!
So nice to be able to see the images - it's so tempting to visit them all now!
