Tropicals: Taro Root

The grocery store near me is selling taro root as a vegetable. How can I plant this to get some nice plants? I bought a few roots for about $.25. It certainly beats paying for the plants if it works. Any suggestions or just bury it, water it and and wait?

bury it, water it and cross yer fingers and toes...cause if it grows you hit a bargin! Good luck!

Yes, I did exactly the same thing, found some at an Asian store. They came up just fine.

What type of taro will it grow up to be?

I have grown bunches of them this way from The Asian markets as well..as well as gingers and curcumas from the markets.
:-)

Poppysue, from what I could find on the net, it will probably be the standard green taro. However, there is supposedly a difference between the kind that grows in standing water (like what is used as a water plant) and the kind that is field grown. Both seem to be grown for the edible root, so who knows which I'll get. I should probably go and pick up a bunch more.

I'm gonna look for one too. Sounds like it'd be fun to grow. I have a ginger root growing now. It seemed like it took forever to start but it finally sprouted some green shoots.
