What does the pledge of allegiance mean?

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I have had this on one of my little homepages for several years.. I have had many nice comments in the guest book from teachers about it. Now some judge in California (San Francisco) tells me it is unconstitutional. WHAT IS OUR WORLD COMING TO?

I guess I want to know since when does "freedom of religion" mean I can not practice my Christian beliefs in the Country I was born in??????????? I don't care what the Muslims,Taoists,Confucians,Hindi,Atheists,Satanists,Judges and Lawyers think; I want to be able to practice MY religion in the land of my birth!!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it was just a matter of time before someone did this. Our state school super was on the news and said if it came to GA, she would practice civil disobedience and would keep on til they carted her off to jail.
Just another sign of the times.

I just don't know what to say anymore. I really really don't!

Our Country was founded on God and the reason we have become the power that we are is we put God first. This that happened today in Calif. is sicking. I think our Country should stand up to this one man in Calif. and not let this happen. It is scary. I could say more but I guess I had better control myself. This man does not believe in God. We saw him on the news and heard him talk. Surely one man can not control this. We can't let it happen. Beebalm

This country is going to H-ll...There is so much abuse happening it is sickening and non-respect! It makes me sick to my stomach! There is so much false pretense that some people think they are so much better than others because they have alot more money or at least think they do but are in debt up to their neck!

Talking about no respect...the younger generation has been so spoiled they only think of themselves and they should have their behinds spanked like we did and they would become better people in the long run...I'm not talking about abuse but a good 'ol spanking!

Secondly...DOPE is the main culprit of this country and it brings crime...stealing...killing...etc!

Thirdly...I think the good 'ol government and FCC is too soft on the type of material in videos and music is scandalous these days on Tv...

And fourth...We just keep letting it happen...Yes, What is this country and world coming to? It is coming to an end soon!

I also saw today on the news where in a courthouse they are taking out a plaque of the ten commandments!

Lord Bless us All!!!

Well said.

The problem seems to be too many judges and lawyers that are clueless as to what this country stands for and what is truly important instead of the fast buck. They can change the words if it makes them feel better, but as for me and my children and friends, this will always remain "One nation under God"!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

On Flag Day, a local radio station had an employee of a flag store recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It was later broadcast omitting the words "Under God" without the person's knowledge or permission. You should hear all the uproar! It has made international news. I pray this judicial madness will pass; too many of us rely on God for our daily lives.

I too will continue to say "Under God" whether it is official or not.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

We have become a nation ruled by the minority not the majority. We should not be allowed freedom to say the pledge, just so they (minority) can be free from hearing it.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

This sort of thing is going on all over the WESTERN world, this bl**dy insane "Politically Correctness".

Whether in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, or France, minorities, who have immigrated into those countries, start complaining that they, or their religious beliefs don't get equal rights....... well sorry folks, these are all Christian countries, whose basis, morally as in faith, is the religion called CHRISTIANITY!!!!

There have been measures taken in all of the aforementioned countries, to ascertain that ALL religions may be practiced there, with neither LET NOR HINDRANCE.

The fashion nowadays is to make these countries look like racists, as whenever God is mentioned, they run to their lawyers and slap a court case against the government, or whichever body actually had the bare faced cheek, to mention the Christian GOD in a public place, and they feel put down!!!

These people who are claiming to be "Politically Correct", should maybe look in the mirror and ask themselves if they are not destroying the very foundations upon which these great nations were built. These are the enemies of the state.... judges, lawyers, and worst of all many, many politicians.

It pi**es me off!!!

I heard on the news this am that since that guy won the supreme court decision he is now gonna take on the "In God We Trust" on all of our coins! He has also requested police protection from all the threats he has gotten. I say he should have thought about that first, let him protect himself why should we have to support and pay for that?

This is one of the few things I get so worked up about, I can hardly speak! I really don't care how someone worships, if they worship, if they don't worship, but as a human being not yet stripped of my rights, I deserve the same courtesy I extend. I grew up in the middle of a family constantly at war about which religion and which interpretation is THE ONE, and I vowed at a young age never to challenge another's honest beliefs. This eternal nitpicking about every little aspect of a culture is tearing the human race apart, and has done so for as long as there has been a human race. Because I don't slavishly follow the local customs, I am constantly assaulted by so-called friends who insult me as if I am illiterate, with holier-than-thou recitations which all sound like some of the canned motivational tapes I've heard in sales seminars. Sadly, I notice that they also assault each other in a very real sense. (Why on earth do people feel it's necessary to blather on with platitudes we all learned in the first five years of life?) It makes about as much sense to me as if I were to greet you daily on the street and each time begin reciting the alphabet or counting to 100, in a tone that implied that you had no way of knowing these things if I didn't tell you, and it was my sacred duty to tell you at each and every meeting. To share a belief is one thing, to beat someone over the head with it is rude. And people from other cultures are not the only offenders, but I agree it is in poor taste for them to come to the USA by whatever means they can find and then promptly begin trying to force us to become just like the place they just left. Our coinage, our holidays, our national pride, our religions, all were in place long before they were born, and well publicized all over the civilized world. Why did they come, knowing how bad it is for them here? In addition to our own national customs, we are extremely (too much?) tolerant of the beliefs and customs of others in our country. So we have celebrations for Cinco de Mayo for the Mexicans, Rosh Hoshana, and I don't know for sure how to spell that, and other set-aside days for the Jewish, even extending to banking holidays, Juneteenth and Kwanzaa (which is a newly manufactured non-custom, with various spellings, they wanted and got with no contest) for the blacks, Wurstfest for the Germans, and many more. We have churches of every imaginable denomination and faith in any city people chose to build them. The more we try to please everybody from everywhere, the less we please anybody at all, and our citizenry has been criticized far too much after trying so hard to welcome everyone and make them feel comfortable. We have even been challenged about the language we speak as the mother tongue. Can you imagine how far you would get if you went to other countries and demanded that they mint their coins to our satisfaction, and celebrate our Independence Day and our Christmas and our Easter, and teach our language in every school? I know, they do teach English, but not because we asked for it. And not everywhere. I think I should have filed suit about all those behinds in the air and those noisy chants heard all over town in the Middle East. But they would have arrested me! And our State Department made sure I was aware of certain expected courtesies before I ever departed our shores.

Worst of all is that many of these dissidents were born and raised here, enjoying all of the benefits provided by this officially free country. They must think it's cool to be so contrary to their national customs. I say, if you don't like the coins and the pledge and the freedoms, use your money to buy a one way ticket out, instead of trying to destroy what it took the blood of thousands to create. USA is not perfect, and apparently not for everyone, but we don't have to build walls to keep our people in, and it seems to me that quite a lot of people are ready to come here and enjoy our hospitality. Like me, they can always choose to go away from the parts they dislike.

Latest news is that one of the deciding judges cancelled the order, or put a hold on it, or however you might say it. This will give most of us time to officially lodge a protest. You can bet I will search out how to do that! If anyone hears of anything, pass it along.

Thanks Sugar. I am going to create a separate thread in Current Events with a similar petition for all of us at DG to sign, and it can be forwarded to our Congress.

This issue is the sad direction our country is turning to. We dont hear about some of these issues until some judge, or bill gets passed. This is a tragedy. The atheists are in the vast minority and they are trying to rule our country. The issue of freedom of religion church/state is to prevent a state owned church, or government run church. We are free to go to a church of our choice. That was the intention. They think if they take God out they will make themselves feel, or somehow elevate themselves. Without God this country is nothing. I am so proud to live in this country, and to be among fellow Christians. The coinage doesnt say Jesus, Jehovah, Alla, or Budda...it says in God We Trust...very general...our founding fathers built this country on laws straight from the bible in many cases. Some people dont want to change...so if they erase God...they can forget how they have strayed, or dont measure up to God's laws. None of us measure up. But we must try. Without biblical laws the civilized world wouldnt be so civil, would it?
