is this thing going to Y????? It's way taller than me counting the pot, maybe 7' with. It's not Y'ing. It's whiskers, and I want a Y right now!!!! It's the tallest brug I have, one I really babied all winter. If I'd taken as much care with all the others as I did this one, I'd be covered in blooms. Are all of y'alls this tall before Y'ing??
when in the world?
Wish I could - but I can't help ya with the Ying tiG. Curious tho ... about the vine pole you have there in the background. What did you wrap around the stake to make the spiral?
oh, that's for my chocolate vine, which you can't see good. We used copper wire. Just attached at the top, spiraled it and attached at the bottom. I wanted to use a thicker copper, but couldn't afford to do them all. we did this around the mailbox with a good thick copper. I think we put in 6 of these around the yard, some vines look good on them, some are too thin to look good.
It looks nice. I need some extra places for vines - and that looks like a good solution. What section do you find the copper wire stuff in? I've looked before but I couldn't find it at Home Depot.
there's just an aisle with all kinds of wire, lots of copper, huge rolls of other kinds. LOL! lots of help, huh?? it was in the middle of the store if that helps, they're mostly set up the same.
DH wants me to paint them this winter when they are bare, just don't know what color.
Thanks - I'll look for the wire isle. Good luck with Wiskers - it looks nice and healthy. I'm sure it will Y soon =)
Green, tiG...................difinitely green!!
"eyes"
well, would you take the wire off and leave it copper? (it hasn't turned colors yet, and might not, just not sure)
tiG, what a great idea. So you can spiral the wire out even further from the stake tan you have it? The copper will hold its shape? I need one now!!! thanks
that was our main problem, I just couldn't afford to do it with the wire I really wanted. In the photo where I got the idea, they had it really wide at the bottom and sometimes to one side more than the other as it went up. I plan to replace the thin wire i have one at a time as I can afford it to get the look I really want. advice: get the thickest wire you can. Test it in the store to see how well it holds its shape. And this is just a 2x2 and it holds up very well, I thought for sure it would be too thin, but it's not.
2x2??? mm??
inch. they sell them as 2x2s. This one is 8' to give room to plant in the ground.
tig, I've got one about 4' tall that has buds and a cutting that Cala sent me that's only about 1 1/2 ft high and full of buds. I see no reason yours should'nt be blooming except for maybe it was taken from the middle of plant. Mine were cuttings from the tip.Hope yours will bud soon for you.
Tig . . . my Whiskers was over 6' tall with one straight thick stem before it y'd and bloomed. I love the height of this one and I think you will too because it will be a beautiful tree.
I've got to take off the side shoots, just waiting for a minute when I'm in the mood to start cuttings:) Thanks BN, that helps make me relax a little.
Mine is like Snow's. Short and budding. Your's will be perfect for your alley next year.
that's what I'm thinking, actually I wish I'd put it in the alley this year! I went for pinks and whites, so that's the only reason I didn't. I'm starting another alley next year!
tiG.... moine got six foot before it Y'd makes a great tree
thats what I like most then you will get a canapy mine is about six foot across all around
cool!!! maybe I need an entire allee of these!!
Mine was about 6' when it Yed. It's now like Irish's about as wide as it is tall!! They sure are beautiful when the canopy if full of blooms.
TiG, I need more places for vines too and think that's a wonderful idea. How do you attach the wire? Only at the top and bottom? I'm not a crafty person.
Johnnie drilled a hole in the top and bottom. He wrapped the wire around a 3 lb coffee can (about 25 ft of wire) then put one end through the top of post, bent the end down, dropped the coil down around the post, put the other end through the hole in bottom, and bent it back so that it won't come out. I adjusted the wire. We used 6 guage on the mailbox which I like much better than the thin. you can shape it better. If you are going to make the bottom 'ring' much bigger than the top, use 30 ft of wire. He put them about 12-14" in the ground.
I'd love to see Whiskers in a tree form. I bet it's beautiful. Anyone have a picture of it? Tig, Pete, Cala?
tiG, I have some 7-8 ft that have yed and some that have not. Been wondering if they ever will too. Then I have a short (3-4 ft) frosty pink that will be blooming shortly.
Irish, you inspired me to go down and remove all the lower leaves on my brugs. It sure frees up a lot of space. Also it's amazing the number of nasties I found hiding under those lower leaves.
Picture this - I have problems sometimes getting up and down. I'm married to 'he who throws nothing out'. One of those things is a skateboard of my son's - he's 29 - hasn't seen it in 15 years. I just scoot along with my bleach can, garbage bag and snips. On my skateboard with the Grateful Dead logo. Of course I look like a nutcase but it works.
Liz, I can almost imagine you doing that!! I cut off the lower leaves on most of my brugs. It sure cuts down on insect problems, allows more air circulation and also more light to the ones below.
This has been a most informative thread! Plus now I can't wait for my 2 inch Whiskers from Glory to grow to 8 feet!!! I love the tree type ones more than the bush shape. Is Whiskers a Dave's Garden special? I have not seen it for sale anywhere. Thanks ALL for such great suggestions!!
kell
I grew Whiskers form a seed I rececived from LBJ a few year back.
tiG,
Whiskers is normally a tall plant...just hang in there. The blooms on Whiskers are well worth the wait.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh LBJ filled orders? LOL
actually Glory, this is going to be wonderful for a tree!!! I have a couple with buds that aren't as tall as I'd like them.
Kell,
Way back when.... there was no LBJ and we just used to trade Brugs and seeds like we do here.
Is anyone receiving orders from LBJ????
Nope. After the letter that someone here received from them it didn't sound like they would be sending orders out anytime soon if at all.
BrugNanny got a part of her order a few weeks ago. I wrote because I had ordered before she did and had received nothing. Was told that they would contact the nursery and get whatever they could sent to me. Got another email saying that contact had been made and the nursery had my order and will send what they have. Again, nothing. They just keep stringing me along and I don't care anymore. Thanks to some of you, I have most of what was on my order now anyway. Would still like to get Tiara, but it isn't going to kill me if I don't have it.
BrugNanny, what ones did you get?? I had high, high hopes for my order sent in December. I actually would dream about them. So sad.
Kell . . I received Rosamond, Culebra and Pink Favorite. I ordered these right after joining Dave's in January. I also placed an order for 2 brugs from Native Habitat in February and I have not received them yet. I emailed Earl several weeks ago at NH and asked him to just return the $50 that I sent and as of today, I have not received it. I did not even get a response to my email.
I am glad that Poppysue found this thread for you and that I saw your post and was able to respond to it.
Frannie, remember me telling you last week that I was to receive my order this week from LBJ? Even got that personal call from VH to tell me. Guess what..........nada. Guess I didn't expect it to ever happen. Thanks to a couple of great ladies here, I have most of the brugs now anyway. You know who you are and I appreciate your help so much. Thank you!!!
Oh Shirley, That's too bad. It's like your hopes get built up and then knocked down again and again and.........Promises can only be made for so long before it turns into a lie.Even though you have most of the Brugs I'll still keep my fingers crossed that you get your order.
I wonder if the Brug Patrol made a visit to LBJ, LOL!!
Shirley, I was wondering if you received your order this week or at least part of it. How disappointing! There are indeed kind-hearted people here and I am so glad that they were able to fulfill your wishes for some of those special brugs that you wanted. And I also hope that your order still comes.
Frannie
Frannie, is there an Earl at NH also? we were wondering what happened to earl at valley grow. Brugie, you'd think she wouldn't bother to call unless she had them in the box!
