UFO & Scotland

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

In today's news I heard that Scotland is where most UFO sightings have taken place. (Unidentified Flying Objects) Any experiences among the DG-ites?

UFO only means unidentified flying object, Redrose. Of course, if man can build an airplane, he can build another kind of flying object. It isn't necessarily an alien ship. But we earthlings truly don't know what all God made. It is rather naive for us to assume he made only one planet, if he made this one and all the creatures we know of. Brilliant people with the best educations and scientific training don't discount the existence of other forms of life in other solar systems, based on hard evidence they have observed first hand. We can't deny the existence of other planets and other systems in outer space, as humans have been there and walked on the actual surfaces. If we are here and have been there, isn't it reasonable to assume "something" is there and has been here? Our egos make us think we are the one superior race or creation, but not one of us really knows what God might have created. Since He gave us intelligence, I think we have an obligation to use it to its fullest potential, including keeping an open mind. Centuries ago, mankind believed far differently from the way we now believe, and centuries from now will believe differently still. Primitive peoples thought the lightning and thunder and rain and wind were all some form of frightening messages from God. They could never have thought a plane was anything but another message from God. As an aside, try to see a cute little foreign movie called "The Gods Must Be Crazy". So, before you assume you really know it's all made up, look into it with an open mind.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I believe there is other beings out there. As Aimee points out, it would be awfully egotistical of us humans to think we are the only ones. In fact, I am counting on it.....I'm waiting for the first encounters with the Vulcans......(LOL)

Come to think of it, I don't think the Bible mentions airplanes and trains and microwaves and computers and air conditioners and electric lights, and so many things we have. Hmmmmmmm........

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

excellent answer Aimee. wish I were so eloquent!

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

If you believe in life on other planets...
Since God has told us about everything He has made , why didn't it occur to Him to tell us in the Bible that He created another set of people/aliens/whatever you want to call them? Do you really think He's sitting up there creating a new Bible for each planet He's creating living, thinking, independant creatures on? I think not ....

Dinu

I didn't know Scotland had the most sightings. Some friends of mine from my school days will sometimes go to various parts of Wiltshire (next county west to Hampshire) to see 'the lights in the sky' as they call them. It's also the best county to see crop circles too. I've seen the crop circles but not UFO's so far.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Dinu,
Being Scottish, and having lived there for the first half of my life, I was always in the Highlands, either walking or climbing in our beautiful mountains, but the only thing I ever noticed in the sky apart from aeroplanes and birds, was the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they are known in Scotland, (not forgetting the customary clouds of course).

I could imagine that the UFO's that people are seeing are tricks of the light, especially after drinking some of our most famous drink ;-)

I do believe though, that we have been visited here from other planets, and that there are many inhabited planets with forms of life, much more advanced than our own.

From over 11.4 billion suns, 90% of which have solar systems, there must be at least 100,000 with a more advanced technological design as we have. We have just started our space travel....... they have been doing it for thousands, yes probably even tens-of-thousands of years.

Astronomically

Good answer Wintermoor.....

Has anyone read "the sparrow?" good book addressing this issue.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Isn't that an exciting thought? I wish I understood the more technical aspects of it all, but am content to see whatever I see and wait for more knowledgeable souls to explain it all. Interesting data, Wintermoor.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

No Pebble, I haven't read "The Sparrow", do you have an author for me, then I'll look it out. I have many books on this subject here, and also religious books from other religions apart from Christian.

There were many Gods from the ancient peoples who supposedly visited them, especially in South America. Have a look at pictures from Nazca. http://www.dreamscape.com/morgana/rosalind.htm

Also have a wee glimpse at some of the links there. That is just one of the hundreds of 'strange' things in which I am interested.
There is another instance where mould of a plate was found in Turkey, not too far from Ankara (the Capital), but the actual plate was found in the mountains of Mexico. These pieces are claimed by archeologists to be over 4,000 years old. How did the dish get to Mexico?.... and why?

Wintermoor

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

WHAAAAAATTT? you mean to tell me there were visitors im my old country and I didnt know it? they were looking for me....lol - I have an odd sense of humor, I told my kids that we were aliens (my husband had an alien registration card) and that we were waiting for he mother ship to come get us and take us all back to our home world....they dont believe me anymore....

the author of the book I mentioned is
"mary doria russell" and she also wrote a sequel, all of God's children. this book isnt for everyone, but i think you might enjoy it. it is very very thought provoking, I read it over 6 months ago and I still of it quite frequently, in fact, I wish I hadnt read it so i could read it over........
"the sparrow" read it and tell me what you think....

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Sounds like I've got my next book ready to go! I love this subject & a neighbor of ours is reading a book I'm excited about, too, titled "A New Kind of Science" by Stephen Wolfram. I don't know too much about it. If any of you have read it, please let me know what you think.

The way my neighbor described the book's subject is more like evolution in reverse. As I understood from him, the evolution of humans from many different iterations of species is explained differently. The book supposedly explains the evolution of multi-species from one species using mathematical equations. This was a new, but exciting concept for me who is always trying to understand that which I can't!

Aimee
very well stated also i have a copy of that movie.

and i am trying very hard to kieep my soap box under the desk. being non christian and alternative live style this is one of those topics that kind of sets me off. there are words and frases that have changed meanings in the last century. how are we to know what was ment 1600-2000 years ago. then there is the translation argument you start out in aramaic then translate threw 4-5 languages sever centuarys apart and we are back to the words changing meanings part again and up with english. things are going to change meanings. also the bible was written by man not god
and why does "god" have to be "he" that is a very sexest belief started when women were concidered property and lower beings. why can't god be "it" like the native american creator or (yes this is streaching it) in star wars the force. everyone fights over the belief that "my way is the right way" if they would all sit back and chill out they would see that it is all the same basicaly
well time for bed

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

sat on my hands all day. sorry, I have to reply.
troy, God is He, because He said so. God 'inspired' meaning, He gave the words to man to write down. No, it's not all basically the same. Just because you don't believe it doesn't make it so.
hate to see poor Dinu's thread go up and down like this, but I can't just let your statements stand without saying something.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Baa, I had seen the crop circles once on the TV news some years ago and even that was doubted to be a trick. I remember to have seen a TV feature (I think on the Discovery Channel) where they were interviewing people who claimed to have seen UFOs. That was an interesting program. WE have read about them in stories, in Comics, in the movies....

Aimee, Wintermoor... excellent thought-provoking responses.

Dinu

Yes many of the crop circles have been discounted as tricks, but there are some no one claims to have made and are so large and intricate in design. Even if they are hoaxes as well, they are still beautiful :)

I'll be out watching the skies tonight ;)

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Dinu,
I stand corrected:
http://famulus.msnbc.com/FamulusIntl/reuters06-23-115442.asp?reg=EUROPE
Seems we have a holiday resort for them in Bonnybridge!!

I can just imagine all those wee aliens sitting in the pubs drinking whisky, getting plastered, then weaving their way skywards...... that's probably why those things seem to shoot off in all strange directions. Now we know why the one in Roswell crashed in 1947, the wee alien had just been to Scotland, and was drunk-as-a-monkey!!

They shouldn't have operated on him without breathalysing him first ;-)

Hic!!

Wintermoor

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Wintermoor, you rascal!

I won't debate the right or wrong of anyone's thoughts and beliefs here, and my apologies to Dinu for the turn of his thread.

I shall now attempt to put this into paragraphs so Gardenwife and others can follow my thoughts, since she pointed out to me I need to do that for clarity.

I do feel that people should look to history and make a serious study of religions before taking a rigid stand on this subject. Some of the above posts contain many of my own convictions, and I am not an innocent young girl who can't read and reason. We all become so emotional, I'm afraid a discussion of this nature doesn't stand a chance of being kept rational and logical. But I have spent a great deal of time studying and researching, and have reached my own conclusions after much anguish. It was indeed difficult to accept some of the things I cannot deny, and I wrangled with them for a few decades. I value my research and the conclusions I reached, and I am confident of my intelligence enough to trust my work. It would behoove many people to do the research I have, with an open mind, instead of accepting
without question whatever some charismatic or authoritative person told them. Actually, I don't think many people are capable of true objectivity, or can set aside the legends and local customs totally so they can determine what they actually think, not what they have been told is the right thing to think. Remember, when the earth was said to be round, many people thought it was madness. They had always thought it was flat. When witches were burned at the stake, the good people stoking the flames believed it was the righteous thing to do because religious leaders said it was, so they cheerfully murdered good women for the sin of clear thought and intelligence.

Dare to ask yourself how much of your beliefs are formed of your own diligent questions and pursuit of truth, and how much is simply what you were taught and accepted without serious questions or attempts to validate. If you have intelligence and a reasonably clear head, you have an obligation to seek the truth, not be led by Elmer Gantry and his lot. If you won't earnestly study religions, their history and their origins, then you should keep quiet about your so called beliefs, because they aren't yours, they are hand me downs. The world has seen enough of innocent people suffering because someone is absolutely certain there is only one way and it's theirs. Never mind the trite phrases used everywhere, when you take a stand, ask yourself, "How do I know?" The truth shall set you free.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Aimee, are you referring to UFO's or religious beliefs? you said 'this subject', but it's unclear which subject, religious beliefs or UFO's.
cause my little uneducated self still stands by what I posted above. and I am free, no hand me downs, not someone elses thoughts.
I applauded your first post yesterday because I think we have to be respectful to a post that simply asks a quesiton and you were.
Why is it that only 'enlightened, free thinking, educated' people think their truth is THE truth? poor little dumb hicks like me don't stand a chance I guess. troy used this thread to get his two cents in, why is mine worth less?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

tiG,
Well, in spite of all the hard work to make paragraphs, I still am not clear? I said "religion" and "this subject" in the same line so they are together. That to which I refer. But I don't think I said "only enlightened, free thinking educated" people have any monopoly on truth.

Let me clarify a few terms as I understand them: enlightened - a state of awareness, which you can achieve by your own efforts; free thinking - forming your own opinions s a result of your observations and experiences; educated - schooled in one or more disciplines, sufficiently to have a thorough understanding of the basic concepts of said discipline.

Nowhere and in no way did I mean to infer that anyone was a "dumb hick". But for the most part, if one is, one chooses to be, as enlightenment is the product of your own efforts, and education happens along with many of those efforts. If, by "dumb hick", you mean lack of a degree, count me in with the dumb hicks. But I am not a poor little dumb hick, and you can't claim to be either, and you know it. We are both intelligent women who can read, understand and reach conclusions.

As for the relative value of your "two cents worth", don't be so quick to discount it or assume others do. This post will be followed by others who will firmly support your position or "truth", and probably some who will heartily discount my position. I did not even mention what my truth is, and I certainly didn't say anyone else must accept it. I have made an effort to learn what I felt I needed to know, and maybe you call that free thinking. I will not be guilty of minimal effort to know and understand the human condition, and can't assume someone knows something just because he/she says it long and loud. We should have left that kind of blind following behind with the Dark Ages and the illiteracy of the past. My conclusions seem right to me, and I have truly and diligently searched. But I don't force them on anyone else, nor do I feel anyone should attack my beliefs. If you have truly studied with an open mind and feel you have a good understanding of this or any other subject, you are entitled to your conclusions. But I try to keep an open mind, in case I missed anything. Not in case someone has a trite phrase or speech but in case I missed something.

Enlightened, educated people don't think theirs is the only truth, because with enlightment and education comes the realization of the vast sum of our unknowing. But some people think they are more enlightened than they are, without ever bothering to learn.

Art Bell radio program for the UFO buffs.

bitty1, I do enjoy Art Bell, and was so happy when he decided not to stay retired from radio.

tiG, I want to state here for all to read, I am not in any way knocking your beliefs. I sincerely believe no one KNOWS, for a certainty, anything. I consider you an intelligent person, a good woman, a sincere citizen trying to make the best of this life in an honest way. I believe you have a good heart. I believe you are true to your beliefs. If I do or do not share all of them, it is not a problem for me, nor an impediment to friendship. I have friends of many denominations, and many variations within those denominations. It was the intolerance of other people's beliefs that led to 9/11. It was the intolerance of other people's beliefs that led to the Holy Wars. It was the intolerance of other people's beliefs that destroyed many of the old churches and places of worship in other countries. I believe that intolerance itself is a terrible sin. I hope not to be found guilty of it. I hope others exercise tolerance toward me.

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh bitty1...you beat me to it. I have listened to art a long time. He and whitley Strieber wrote a book on global warming that will scare the devil himself. So much info on strange phenomena. It really is worth looking into this site.I keep an open mind... and I still believe santa clauses are out there.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Aimee, it wasn't so much you I was addressing in my last post. I'm so tired of our entire culture saying that every belief is the same and because I believe in the God of the Bible, that I'm brainwashed. When it was put here that everything is the same, no difference, I had to speak up or be guilty of keeping my beliefs quiet just to not ruffle the waters. To see what I believe is the Word of God represented as changed and not what it was in the beginning and totally of man and not of God can't go unchallenged.
I respect you Aimee, and please know that I appreciate your reaching out to me. I hold no ill will at all. I don't expect everyone to believe what I believe, that wouldn't be reality. But I'm not one to leave things said that are so contrary to what many many Christians believe.
I'm not real good with words, but hope that my heart has come across.

THIS is what I really like about the DG community!

I've been to sites (and was a moderator) where this was not handled as smoothly. Thank you tiG & Aimee! You've shown us all that we can have civil discussions and agree to disagree!

With this large of a community I'm surprised there haven't been more dissenting opinions that have led to heated discussions.

Way To Go DGer's!!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Shuttlebunny, you are good to acknowledge the principals at work here. I have experienced life in my realm, and tiG has experienced it in hers. Just as my shoes or hats might not fit her, my beliefs might not, either, but I respect her as a full-fledged human, with the right to form her opinions and act accordingly. It's the old saw about walking in another's moccasins. If I had reached this point in life by a different route, I might feel something else entirely. The important thing to me is something I learned in one of the first psychology classes I ever took: your rights stop at the point where they begin to interfere with mine. Mine, conversely, extend only as far as they can go without interfering with another's. Reasonable people can reason together, and the rest are unevolved. In the sixth grade, I found myself in a vicious fight, physical to the max, with a girl my age. I cannot for the life of me recall what started it, but for some reason she pulled my hair and slapped me, and away we went, in the center of a yelling crowd. But afterward, we became the very closest friends, until I married and moved away. We laughed many times about the fight, as neither could remember how it started or why. And we always held opposite opinions on any given issue. It's called freedom, I think.
