Poison Ivy

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

A friend just called and she got into some poison ivy. She has washed well, but now what? Anyone have a quick cure for poison ivy?
Thanks!

Nope, and I've been looking for years! Something that does help relieve the itching and helps it go away faster is a paste of baking soda and toothpaste (mint or wintergreen kind) with a little water ~ slather that on and it'll help. BUT it sure is messy.

I've heard lots of people here on DG talk about jewel weed soap. I don't know where to get it, but maybe you can do a search on it? I'm planning on trying it out this year.

Tell her to get the stongest cortizone cream she can buy and keep putting it on. Benedryl by mouth will help with the itching too. Tell her to try to not touch that area and then touch other parts of her body without washing good first. Everything she can do to keep it from spreading will help lots.

My son had a terrible case of poison ivy last year and we ended up doctoring most of the summer to get rid of it. Nasty stuff.

I don't know where to get Jewelweed soap, either - you might ask DonnaJo, Brook or PoppySue - I know all of them make a lot of herbal "stuff".

Also, I read where if you can find jewelweed, harvest the flowers, steep them for a bit, them freeze the water in an icecube tray, and rub a jewelweed ice cube on the rash. (Just don't mix it up with any other frozen-flower-in-ice-cubes you might have, and drop it in someone's iced tea, LOL!

Bleach!!! it really works.

Vols, I was just going to suggest Jewel weed, just break open the stems and rub it on the rash. It really works. So does plantain, the broad leaf kind, mix with olive oil in the blender to make a paste and rub it on.

I use Domboro, it's a powder you put in water and use with a compress on the area.

Ask your pharmacist, it is an over the counter medicine.

Works very well for me, plus I do the Benedryl as well.

I use gasoline-i scrape open the blisters and then dump gas on them and let dry-the next day they are done!!!
Tig-I bet bleach works about the same as gas!!!! :]
