Propagation: Growing Crepe Myrtle from seed

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I know you do grow crepe mytrtles,,, I have several in my yard. They do makes lots of seeds afrer the bloom die.. you know.. they can be grow from seeds?? How long? I am wondering cause our Lanvander have been blooming now, I would like to start them from seeds.. Let me know.. I have red, dark pink, white, pink with white on edge. The red one havent bloom for two years.. What can I make them bloom again?

You sure can grow them by seed. Last fall I harvested all kinds of seeds and sowed them immediately (using the paper towel method). Just about every seed germinated, and they bloomed in May. They are now about 2 feet tall and doing very well. They won't be exactly like the parent, however, so if you want to keep that special pink/white crepe, you'll need to propagate it vegetatively, by cuttings. Good luck!

Poppysue wrote the paper towel method HOWTO. It's in this thread: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/178676.html

Scroll about half-way down.

Good luck!

Speaking of Crepe Myrtles, Is there any way to inhibit their blooms? I have a gorgeous one near a pool and it is over taxing the pool maintenance. I would love to keep the tree if I could keep it from blooming? This one is 15ft tall, do they transplant well when they are this size? Thanks/Mark

I have a Crepe Myrtle that is three different colors... light pink, red, and white. And they are so beautiful, and I was wondering if I could start more of them from seeds from the one that I have now! Can I? Will they bloom? I have never tried that before!
